This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume situates and problematizes the points of tension implicated in diverse historical and theoretical conceptualizations of the body through a visual studies framework. By proposing materiality and power as two polarities through which the body is mobilized, it highlights the interstitial function of the body as a mediator between materiality and politics beyond the body/soul-mind dichotomy. Specifically, the book brings together complex analytical approaches to representations of the body in diverse media, such as the visual arts, television, film, literature, architecture, dance, and theatre, among others. As a result, and to highlight the interdisciplinary dimension of this collection of essays, Body between Power and Materiality includes texts by scholars in a wide range of fields, from art historians, media studies experts, and sociologists to literary theorists.

. . durante el embarazo, pero mucho mejor. This Spanish-language translation of What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition, America's pregnancy bible with over 19 million copies in print, is livelier, less formal, and altogether more user-friendly than ever before. It’s a book for expectant parents who don’t speak English or who, at a stressful time, find that what's most familiar—their first language—is most welcome. It's filled with up-to-date information reflecting not only what's new in pregnancy but what's relevant to pregnant women. Heidi Murkoff has answered dozens of new questions and included loads of new asked-for material, such as a detailed week-by-week fetal development section in each of the monthly chapters, an expanded chapter on pre-conception, and a brand-new one on carrying multiples. More comprehensive, reassuring, and empathetic than ever, this edition incorporates recent developments in obstetrics and addresses current lifestyle trends (from tattooing and belly piercing to Botox and aromatherapy). There's more than ever on pregnancy matters practical (including an expanded section on workplace concerns), physical (with more symptoms, more solutions), emotional (more advice on riding the mood roller coaster), nutritional (from low-carb to vegan, from junk food–dependent to caffeine-addicted), and sexual (what's hot and what's not in pregnant lovemaking), as well as much more support for that very important partner in parenting, the dad-to-be. Overflowing with tips, helpful hints, and humor (a pregnant woman's best friend), this new edition is more accessible and easier to use than ever before. It's everything parents-to-be have come to expect from What to Expect . . . only better.

Book Reactive scattering for H H2 and H H2 and its isotopologues

Download or read book Reactive scattering for H H2 and H H2 and its isotopologues written by Dequan Wang and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reactive scattering for H- + H2 and H+ + H2 and its isotopologues were investigated using different methods. The studies aimed at providing insights into elementary reactions, and go beyond these to more complexchemical reactions. By comparison of the reaction probabilities of H+ + H2 using adiabatic and non-adiabatic methods, it was found that, at low collision energies, the reaction preferentially occurs adiabatically, but at higher collision energies non-adiabatic effects should be taken into account. For H- + H2 and its isotopologues, we can see that, at low collision energies, the reaction probabilities and reaction cross section using SM-PES and AY-PES are very similar but different from PS-PES. The reaction cross sections investigated with quasi-classical trajectoriesare higher than those calculated with quantum wavepackets. For the collision H- and D- with HD, the main reaction path ways are different with the different collision energies.

Book The Methuen Drama Companion to Performance Art

Download or read book The Methuen Drama Companion to Performance Art written by Bertie Ferdman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Methuen Drama Companion to Performance Art offers a comprehensive guide to the major issues and interdisciplinary debates concerning performance in art contexts that have developed over the last decade. It understands performance art as an institutional, cultural, and economic phenomenon rather than as a label or object. Following the ever-increasing institutionalization and mainstreaming of performance, the book's chapters identify a marked change in the economies and labor practices surrounding performance art, and explore how this development is reflective of capitalist approaches to art and event production. Embracing what we perceive to be the 'oxymoronic status' of performance art-where it is simultaneously precarious and highly profitable-the essays in this book map the myriad gestures and radical possibilities of this extreme contradiction. This Companion adopts an interdisciplinary perspective to present performance art's legacies and its current practices. It brings together specially commissioned essays from leading innovative scholars from a wide range of approaches including art history, visual and performance studies, dance and theatre scholarship in order to provide a comprehensive and multifocal overview of the emerging research trends and methodologies devoted to performance art.

Book Performance Art in Portugal

Download or read book Performance Art in Portugal written by Cláudia Madeira and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores histories which have only recently been rediscovered by artists and researchers. This study explores the history of Portuguese performance art, in its various "speculative" and "performative" forms. The author approaches this relationship with the re-emergence and centrality of these (semi-)peripheral histories at an international level, whilst identifying some of their unique traits: their cycles of emergence and retraction in Portuguese history; their multiple and complex ontologies; the intertwined relations between the art of performance and the social performance of the Portuguese (regarding topics as sensitive and fracturing as those of the long dictatorship, the colonial war and the revolutionary process, or even the integration of Portugal in the European Community and, more recently, the various 21st century social, political and economic crises). This reading in turn covers the development of the relationship between performance and hybridism, namely, analyzing the recent dimension of meta-hybridism, in the processes of artistic homage that contemporary Portuguese creators have been establishing through access to the histories and archives of this historical genre. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and performance studies, performance art and arts in general.

Book Myth and Subversion in the Contemporary Novel

Download or read book Myth and Subversion in the Contemporary Novel written by José Manuel Losada Goya and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bilingual work identifies and explains the subversive rewriting of ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary novels. The book opens with two theoretical essays on the subject of subversive tendencies and myth reinvention in the contemporary novel. From there, it moves on to the analysis of essential texts. Firstly, classical myths in works by authors such as André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino or Christa Wolf (for instance, Theseus, Oedipus or Medea) are discussed. Then, myths of biblical origin – such as the Flood or the Golem – are revisited in the work of Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes and Cynthia Ozick. A further section is concerned with the place of modern myths (Faust, the ghost, Ophelia…) in the fiction of Günter Grass, Paul Auster, or Clara Janés. The contributors have also delved into the relationship between myth and art – especially in the discourse of contemporary advertising, painting and cinema – and myth’s intercultural dimensions: hybridity in the Latin American novels of Augusto Roa Bastos and Carlos Fuentes, and in the Hindu-themed novels of Bharati Mukherjee. This volume emerges from the careful selection of 37 essays out of over 200 which were put forward by outstanding scholars from 25 different countries for the Madrid International Conference on Myth and Subversion (March 2011).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Moving Otherwise examines how contemporary dance practices in Buenos Aires, Argentina enacted politics within climates of political and economic violence from the late 1960s to the present. From the repression of military dictatorships to the precarity of economic crises, contemporary dancers and audiences consistently responded to and reimagined the everyday choreographies that have accompanied Argentina's volatile political history. The central concept, "moving otherwise," names how concert dance - and its offstage practices and consumption - offer alternatives to, and sometimes critique, the patterns of movement and bodily comportment that shape everyday life in contexts marked by violence. Drawing on archival research, interviews, and the author's embodied experiences as a collaborator and performer, the book analyzes a wide range of practices including concert works, community dance initiatives, and the everyday labor that animates dance. It demonstrates how these diverse practices represent, resist, and remember violence and engender social mobilization on and off the theatrical stage. As the first book length critical study of Argentine contemporary dance, it introduces a breadth of choreographers to an English speaking audience, including Ana Kamien, Susana Zimmermann, Estela Maris, Alejandro Cervera, Renate Schottelius, Susana Tambutti, Silvia Hodgers, and Silvia Vladimivsky. It considers previously undocumented aspects of Argentine dance history, including crossings between contemporary dancers and 1970s leftist political militancy, Argentine dance labor movements, political protest, and the prominence of tango themes in contemporary dance works that address the memory of political violence"--

Download or read book Guerrilla Girls The Art of Behaving Badly written by Guerrilla Girls and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guerrilla Girls: The Art of Behaving Badly is the first book to catalog the entire career of the Guerrilla Girls from 1985 to present. The Guerrilla girls are a collective of political feminist artists who expose discrimination and corruption in art, film, politics, and pop culture all around the world. This book explores all their provocative street campaigns, unforgettable media appearances, and large-scale exhibitions. • Captions by the Guerrilla Girls themselves contextualize the visuals. • Explores their well-researched, intersectional takedown of the patriarchy In 1985, a group of masked feminist avengers—known as the Guerrilla Girls—papered downtown Manhattan with posters calling out the Museum of Modern Art for its lack of representation of female artists. They quickly became a global phenomenon, and the fearless activists have produced hundreds of posters, stickers, and billboards ever since. • More than a monograph, this book is a call to arms. • This career-spanning volume is published to coincide with their 35th anniversary. • Perfect for artists, art lovers, feminists, fans of the Guerrilla Girls, students, and activists • You'll love this book if you love books like Wall and Piece by Banksy, Why We March: Signs of Protest and Hope by Artisan, and Graffiti Women: Street Art from Five Continents by Nicholas Ganz
