Book excerpt: Tracing the impacts of militarism on the American landscape, through the lens of art, environmental studies, and politics Devour the Land considers how contemporary photographers have responded to the US military's impact on the domestic environment since the 1970s, a dynamic period for environmental activism as well as for photography. This catalogue presents a lively range of voices at the intersection of art, environmentalism, militarism, photography, and politics. Alongside interviews with prominent contemporary artists working in the landscape photography tradition, the images speak to photographers' varied motivations, personal experiences, and artistic approaches. The result is a surprising picture of the ways violence and warfare surround us. Although most modern combat has taken place abroad, the US domestic landscape bears the footprint of armed conflict--much of the environmental damage we live with today was caused by our own military and the expansive network of industries supporting its work. Designed to evoke a field book and to nod toward ephemera produced by earlier artists and activists, the catalogue features works by dozens of photographers, including Ansel Adams, Robert Adams, Dorothy Marder, Alex Webb, Terry Evans, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trenton Doyle Hancock has created a world of characters through drawings, paintings, and installations and this "field guide" immerses readers in his creative process and inspirations. Trenton Doyle Hancock has transformed his childhood love of comic books, toys, and superhero culture into his own creation myth. That mythology and the fascinating, multimedia iterations that it has sparked are told in this captivating and revealing book. Accompanied by images of his paintings, drawings, and installations alongside pictures of his own vast toy and pop culture collections as well as pages from his forthcoming graphic novel, the artist traces the birth of the Mounds and Vegans--the plants and mutants that are forever at war--through which he explores good, evil, authority, race, moral relativism, and religion. Hancock takes readers inside his largest exhibition yet at MASS MoCA--a multi-media work that blends sculpture, painting, and installations to bring the Mounds' world to life. Included in this book are contributions by the exhibition curator Denise Markonish, an art historical essay about Hancock's paintings, and illuminating conversations between Hancock and some of his influences, including Frank Oz. With this book, Hancock merges his personal history with his imagination to create a rich panoply of color, image, and language. Copublished by MASS MoCA and DelMonico Books

Book excerpt: The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has one of the finest collections of Korean art outside East Asia, with particularly superb holdings of ceramics, including celadon masterworks from the eleventh to fourteenth centuries, and Buddhist paintings and sculptures. It is also rich in metalwork, lacquer, and ink painting. While some of the hundred objects presented here were created for royals and aristocrats, many others were originally intended for everyday use and tell a story not only about the artisans who made these boxes, mirrors, jars, tiles, and trays but also about the people who used them. The works represented in 'Arts of Korea' reach in time from a Bronze Age dagger to contemporary ceramics and prints, highlighting the creative dialogue of artists with Korea's unique traditions, as well as with those of China and Japan, over more than two millennia. Enhanced with illuminating essays about the objects' cultural history, this book offers an ideal introduction to the splendors and subtleties of Korean art.

Book Monumental Mobility

Download or read book Monumental Mobility written by Lisa Blee and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Installed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1921 to commemorate the tercentenary of the landing of the Pilgrims, Cyrus Dallin's statue Massasoit was intended to memorialize the Pokanoket Massasoit (leader) as a welcoming diplomat and participant in the mythical first Thanksgiving. But after the statue's unveiling, Massasoit began to move and proliferate in ways one would not expect of generally stationary monuments tethered to place. The plaster model was donated to the artist's home state of Utah and prominently displayed in the state capitol; half a century later, it was caught up in a surprising case of fraud in the fine arts market. Versions of the statue now stand on Brigham Young University's campus; at an urban intersection in Kansas City, Missouri; and in countless homes around the world in the form of souvenir statuettes. As Lisa Blee and Jean M. O'Brien show in this thought-provoking book, the surprising story of this monumental statue reveals much about the process of creating, commodifying, and reinforcing the historical memory of Indigenous people. Dallin's statue, set alongside the historical memory of the actual Massasoit and his mythic collaboration with the Pilgrims, shows otherwise hidden dimensions of American memorial culture: an elasticity of historical imagination, a tight-knit relationship between consumption and commemoration, and the twin impulses to sanitize and grapple with the meaning of settler-colonialism.
