Book excerpt: The Decision Between Us combines an inventive reading of Jean-Luc Nancy with queer theoretical concerns to argue that while scenes of intimacy are spaces of sharing, they are also spaces of separation. John Paul Ricco shows that this tension informs our efforts to coexist ethically and politically, an experience of sharing and separation that informs any decision. Using this incongruous relation of intimate separation, Ricco goes on to propose that “decision” is as much an aesthetic as it is an ethical construct, and one that is always defined in terms of our relations to loss, absence, departure, and death. Laying out this theory of “unbecoming community” in modern and contemporary art, literature, and philosophy, and calling our attention to such things as blank sheets of paper, images of unmade beds, and the spaces around bodies, The Decision Between Us opens in 1953, when Robert Rauschenberg famously erased a drawing by Willem de Kooning, and Roland Barthes published Writing Degree Zero, then moves to 1980 and the “neutral mourning” of Barthes’ Camera Lucida, and ends in the early 1990s with installations by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Offering surprising new considerations of these and other seminal works of art and theory by Jean Genet, Marguerite Duras, and Catherine Breillat, The Decision Between Us is a highly original and unusually imaginative exploration of the spaces between us, arousing and evoking an infinite and profound sense of sharing in scenes of passionate, erotic pleasure as well as deep loss and mourning.

His reflection is born out of his relation to the bookstore, in the first place his neighborhood one, but beyond that any such "perfumery, rotisserie, patisserie," as he calls them, dispensaries "of scents and flavors through which something like a fragrance or bouquet of the book is divined, presumed, sensed." On the Commerce of Thinking is thus not only something of a semiology of the specific cultural practice that begins with the unique character of the writer's voice and culminates in a customer crossing the bookstore threshold, package under arm, on the way home to a comfortable chair, but also an understated yet persuasive plea in favor of an endangered species. In evoking the peddler who, in times past, plied the streets with books and pamphlets literally hanging off him, Nancy emphasizes the sensuality of this commerce and reminds us that this form of consumerism is like no other, one that ends in an experience-reading-that is the beginning of a limitless dispersion, metamorphosis, and dissemination of ideas. Making, selling, and buying books has all the elements of the exchange economy that Marx analyzed--from commodification to fetishism--yet each book retains throughout an absolute and unique value, that of its subject. With reading, it gets repeatedly reprinted and rebound. For Nancy, the book thus functions only if it remains at the same time open and shut, like some Moebius strip. Closed, it represents the Idea and takes its place in a canon by means of its monumental form and the title and author's name displayed on its spine. But it also opens itself to us, indeed consents to being shaken to its core, in being read each time anew.

The legal framework is rapidly changing, especially in Europe where the principle of cumulation of a special sui generis regime for protecting industrial design with copyright rules has been established. In the last decade, national courts of some Member States conferred to the “cumulative regime” a peculiar meaning, other courts enforced design rights in line with the interpretation given by the Court of Justice of the EU. The copyright/design interface is presented here to a wider, non-specialist audience, taking as a starting point the notion of industrial design derived from design studies, on the border between art and science.

Three hours later they ended their procession at the museum's new temporary home, in Queens. Along the way, which ran from 11 West 53 Street, over the Queensboro Bridge, and up Queens Boulevard, the procession absorbed 100 additional participants, and enacted a very public spectacle--part saint's day procession and part secular celebration--of the museum's historic move to MoMA QNS.

Book excerpt: On Yannis Tsarouchis’s career: his thirteen-year exile in Paris, and his absorption and transformation of Greek folk traditions, ancient Greek and early Christian art, shadow theater, and modern art. Yannis Tsarouchis was a Greek painter whose multifarious practice spanned seven decades, from the 1920s to the 1980s. More than three decades after his death in 1989, the artist’s rich oeuvre remains relatively unknown outside of Greece, where he is recognized as one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. This catalogue is published on the occasion of the first major survey of his work outside of his home country, which is also the first exhibition in the United States devoted to his work. The show brings together over two hundred paintings, drawings, watercolors, stage designs, and photographs, including portraits of anonymous youths, homoerotically charged mise-en-scènes, and major allegorical paintings referencing religious iconography augmented with contemporary costumes and props. The foundation of Tsarouchis’s artistic sensibility involved negotiating the difference between the promise of modernization and the spell of tradition, as well as the gradual elaboration of this difference in his personal politics, which aimed at subverting the gender binary. Portraying solitary young men in interiors—daydreaming, gazing pensively, reclining, relaxing, and enjoying their own company—Tsarouchis formulated a unique artistic language. His works establish their own symbolic universe, mixing personal memory, loss, and desire, pointing to the negotiation and transgression of limits between art and the everyday that were central to his work and philosophy. Yannis Tsarouchis: Dancing in Real Life includes numerous works spanning the artist’s career, including his thirteen-year exile in Paris, showing how he absorbed and transformed such influences as Greek folk traditions; ancient Greek and early Christian art; Byzantine mosaics, frescoes, and icon painting; the Greek shadow theater of Karaghiozis; and even the new languages of modern art (cubism, fauvism, and surrealism). It features English translations of Tsarouchis’s writings and poetry, essays by Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation president Niki Gripari, art historian Evgenios D. Matthiopoulos, curator and writer Adam Szymczyk, and dramaturge and scholar Dorota Sajewska, and a project by artist and architect Andreas Angelidakis.
