Book excerpt: In February 2014, an international colony of young, freewheeling and footloose artists held a group exhibition that would stand as a pivotal turning point for the future of George Town, Penang. It was an exhibition destined to make the artists household names, infamous for boldly swinging into parties and installing challenging art onto Southeast Asian walls. It would also spell the return of George Town to a worldwide destination, a city relegated to backwater ashes rising to heights shared by heritage, culture, and cosmopolitanism. In this personal exposé, James H. Springer documents the lives and times of artists during the period of 2010 to 2016, telling the story of George Town’s gentrification through their own influential experiences. Through childhood memories, artistic inspirations, fluctuating relationships and artwork – learn how these young artists lay a new path for George Town going into unpredictable times. During what could arguably be described as Malaysia’s most troubling political era, Springer describes how the flourishing of art in George Town gave its population a much needed respite from federal government tomfoolery. In addition, George Town’s rising art scene gave Penang State a leg up in economic prosperity, creating an unheard of level of opportunity that would either be capitalised on or squandered. Malaysia’s Canvas lays bare the reality of being an artist in a developing country and the change it can inspire, with no holds barred.

Book On this Island

Download or read book On this Island written by Billy Morrow Jackson and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2005 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the ferry leaves Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard slowly rises on the horizon, something inside you changes. The air is cleaner, the sky seems more blue and the water clearer. Then you realize it is not the water or the air or the sky that change, but that something inside you changes as you leave the mainland and draw closer to the Island. Martha's Vineyard may be just a few miles off the coast of Cape Cod, but to those who love the Island, she is world away. The Wampanoag name for the Vineyard, Noepe means Island in the Streams and comes close to capturing the essence of Martha's Vineyard. To describe Martha's Vineyard historically and geographically is easy. It was formed nearly 12,000 years ago, was first settled by the Wampanoag Indians and was discovered in 1602 by English mariner Bartholomew Gosnold. It is 100 square miles and consists of six distinct towns. But to capture the spirit of the Island is a much greater challenge. Acclaimed artists Billy Morrow Jackson, a Vineyard resident and visitor for over fifty years, and his wife, Siti Maria Jackson, provide an artist's view of this unique Island in the Streams. On this Island includes original paintings, including classic works depicting the Gay Head Cliffs and Menemsha to the down Island towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. The artists focus not only on the land that is Martha's Vineyard, but they also capture the life and spirit of the people of the Island. On this Island: An Artist's View of Martha's Vineyard offers a rare view of the Island captured by two artists who know and appreciate all that the Island is.

Housing and architecture, both modern and traditional, are discussed, along with cuisine and fashion. Students can use the book to analyze gender roles and family life. They can also read about the ways in which festivals are celebrated and can compare and contrast leisure activities of Singapore and Malaysia with their own. The volume concludes with a look to the future of these two evolving countries, both moving toward modernity, but still holding on to the traditions of the past.

Book Law Government and the Constitution in Malaysia

Download or read book Law Government and the Constitution in Malaysia written by Andrew Harding and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to give a comprehensive picture of law, government and the constitution in Malaysia, and to set constitutional developments in their proper political and social context. It is written in such a way that lawyers may see how perspectives other than the purely legal can enrich the understanding of constitutional issues in Malaysia and that others may comprehend the lawyer's perspective on these issues. There has been an increasing interest in constitutional issues in Malaysia since the mid-1980s following a number of important events, including the advent of judicial activism and the curtailment of royal powers. There is now a pressing need for a reappraisal of the Malaysian constitution in terms of its political and social dimensions and dynamics, and the extent of its adherence to, or its interpretation of, those principles which are collectively known as `constitutionalism', that is, democratic government, the rule of law, the separation of powers, and the observance of fundamental human rights and liberties. The book examines how the constitution has adjusted to its environment, how it actually operates and how its abstractions differ from reality. The author concludes that the principles of the constitution have been eroded to such a degree that a new constitutional settlement is needed - one which makes it clear what the basic tenets of the Malaysian polity are.

Book Asia Pacific Legal Development

Download or read book Asia Pacific Legal Development written by Gerry Ferguson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this age of globalization many legal experts see evidence of swift global movement toward an eventual single "world legal system." Yet, the trend to political and economic integration in some parts of the world is matched by the trend to disintegration in others, where strong cultural and political resistance to external influences exists. Asia-Pacific Legal Development traces current and prospective developments in several legal systems of the Asia-Pacific region to make sense of these trends and counter-trends. The contributing authors represent a wide variety of specialist expertise, both "public" and "private," and together they encompass the three sectors that constitute a modern system of formal law: the economic, the behavioural, and the civic. Taking into account the opinions and perspectives of both indigenous and non-indigenous experts on topics ranging from prostitution to constitutional law, the book surveys how several ASEAN nations, as well as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, are confronting social, economic, and legal change. In the first three parts, chapters are grouped along general sectoral lines to cover economic, civic, and behavioural themes, while in the fourth, cross-sectoral contexts are addressed. With the introduction and concluding chapter, the editors provide an overall integrating framework as well as provocative insights into trends in legal development in the Asia-Pacific region, and on comparative legal research and writing in general. Asia-Pacific Legal Development is not only an exemplary model for cooperative and comparative legal research and scholarly pluralism, but also a rich study of the increasingly relevant issue of convergence and divergence of legal systems, with a unique Asian focus.
