Book excerpt: Excerpt from Painting in France, After the Decline of Classicism Modernism are all Protestant; or, perhaps, a more accurate statement of the case would be this Romanticism and Realism were Protestant, but Mod ernism is so entirely independent of Classicism as to have not even the idea of protesting against it. Meanwhile Classicism is forced to accept - which it does with loud complaints and many an anathema the position of one of the art religions instead of Me art religion; and it may maintain this kind of exis tence for a long time to come, shorn of all authority to punish heterodoxy, and compelled to see hetero doxy lifting its many heads in bold independence, yet still supported by venerable usage, and by the devotion of faithful adherents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris the Beautiful Paris is neither mediaeval nor modern; it refuses to be assigned to any definite chronol ogy; it is unique, and there is a suggestion of a vast realm of life that is aglow with wonderful possibilities. Infinite trains of thought are inspired: one realizes that he is in the centre of art, of scientific activity and discovery, and that he treads on the very threshold of sur prises that may, any morning, quite transform the course of progress. There is a curious sense of satisfaction with one's environment, as being that which contains and offers everything, and stimulates the purposes of life in myriad dirce tions. The French capital is a paradise of beauty it is also a paradise of opportunity. The spirit experiences a sense of liberation from barriers and obstacles inseparable from all other cities or localities; a sense of being set free to observe. Book The Story of French Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of French Painting Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Caffin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of French Painting The latter involves, it is to be admitted, much that is intellectually and artistically confused and tentative. But the student is himself a part of the progress and must face the issue and assist in clearing its confusion and establishing it on a basis of stability and permanence. He cannot, if he is alive to the modern spirit, afford to play the ostrich. It goes without saying, however, that the part of the story most difficult to write and to estimate deals with the manifestations of the near present, which as yet we are compelled to view without the advantage of a lengthened perspective. How far these manifestations represent elements of vital growth and embody some thing durable and sound amid the flux of change must, in the nature of the case, be largely a matter of conjecture. Is reported by Brantome to have said of a squarely-built woman that she looked like une bateleuse, ou, pour dire plus proprement, une de ces femmes en peinture que l'on porte de Flandres, ' and something of this Flemish type of form, broad and short, enters into all Pinaigrier's designs. We find it in his earlier works, in his Scenes from the Life of the Virgin, ' and in the much-restored Visit of the Queen of Sheba' (i 5 - all glass-paintings in the church of St. Gervais, - and again the same type appears in the Salutation, ' executed thirteen years later at Ecouen. His colour shows corresponding peculiarities, for rich violets, dark browns, and tones of sombre crimson replenish the scantier resources of the school from which he sprang, and combine to produce an effect of great depth and force. Book tudes in Modern French Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book tudes in Modern French Art Classic Reprint written by Earl Shinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Études in Modern French Art Go see the drawings by Raphael in the Louvre; see how he attaches his figure together at the knees and shoulders and hips; how careful he is to insist on this continuity of the form; how every bone hangs by a string to some other bone; and how careful he is to express this dragging and weight of the form. I have never seen a drawing by Gerome which did not insist on the same quality of nature. He may violently bend the joint of a figure, but what he insists on is the flow of it, not the break of it. This continuity is one of the great traits of a figure by Gerome; another is, that when the conditions of the picture do not give a chance to tell all the facts about a figure, and when some have to be expressed and others omitted, he expresses the facts of the mechanism of the human frame, so that the figure, however slight, is a viable machine. He has sometimes shown a peculiar reticence in stating the facts about a figure, reducing it to its necessary parts; these slighted or subordinate figures remind me strangely of Egyptian images, and have something of the same dignity; an Egyptian figure always seems to say that the artist was capable of expressing more if he chose, but preferred to hold his tongue; the facts of anatomy seem to be all there, only enclosed in a sort of envelope; and the figure is sure to be not a bundle of limbs, but an unity, depending upon itself from head to foot. This summary treatment, perhaps inspired by his love for Egyptian art, is successfully practiced alone by Gerome among modern painters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Painters F one wishes to explain house building to a child, it is best to show him how the foundations are laid and how the walls rise from them. So in trying to find an easy way to make a clear study of Modern Art, what it means and how it came about, I have tried to expose enough of the foundations to render easily intelligible the kind of house which has risen upon them. My intention has been to write a book not for the expert, but for the ordinary man who is interested in Art, or for the Art student who is still at the outset of his or her career. Book A History of French Art 1100 1899 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of French Art 1100 1899 Classic Reprint written by Rose Georgina Kingsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Art, 1100-1899 In other nations we see that their Art has undoubtedly been affected by conditions of race, soil, and climate. The blue Sky and blue waves Of Italy - its vines, and olives, and cypress groves, the grace and charm of its women, in whom the mysterious attraction of the goddess Of antiquity seems to live afresh, were predestined to produce that most perfect flower of Art, which has made the whole country a shrine. And to that shrine a ceaseless stream of devotees have flocked for hundreds of years, paying eternal homage to eternal beauty. In Spain - the land of fierce adventure and, passionate serenade, severe in its natural aspects, with a people of strongly-marked characteristics, tough as their own Toledo blades, gloomy and fanatical in their religion - we get the very key to Spanish Art. And the inex pressible charm which reigns over the English landscape - the sense of tranquil security - the country life and love of nature which are SO closely bound up with the life of the whole nation - the deep, heavy colour - the moist verdure of hedgerow and pasture, woodland and moorland - to all these elements we owe our great landscape artists, who have so nobly interpreted the solid, steadfast, yet tender beauty of their country. France is in some respects the most richly-dowered country on earth, both in the characteristics of her race and in the diversity of her natural gifts. And France has always captivated the world by her very contradictions. Despite momentary irritations and impatiences, she must always be, not only to her children, but to all who have once experienced her subtle charm, what she was called of old La douce France Her race, composed of many elements, has pre served the characteristics Of each, and gradually fused them into a harmonious whole. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nineteenth Century Artists, English and French The followmg pages contam the Scammon Lectures delivered at Chicago in the spring of 1907, along with one or two addenda inserted, which were promised at the conclusion of the course. It was the lecturer' s intention to develop them into a larger volume, containing a more complete discussion of the subject; but c1rcum stances have prevented the fulfilment of that desire. Some things have been added which were not spoken. Others have been omitted, because they were more suited for an oral address than for a prmted book. Much of the discussion is fragmentary, because the lectures were not in tended for advanced scholars or mature art critics, but rather for students who had not pur sued their researches very far.
