The first of our great decorative artists was John La Farge, whose death is so recent that it comes within the year recorded in this volume. His first decoration of importance was executed in 1861 for the Church of the Paulist Fathers in New York City. In 1875 William Morris Hunt began the beautiful but ill-fated decorations of the State Capitol at Albany, N. Y., fragments of which are still in existence, but not accessible to the public. In 1876 Mr. La Farge undertook the decoration of Trinity Church, Boston, the first building in this country of which the entire decorative scheme was placed in the hands of an artist. Since that time the decorative arts have prospered wonderfully, and today there are scattered through the United States remarkable examples of mural painting, stained glass and mosaic of which our citizens may justly be proud. The future of mural painting in this country is of vital im portance, and the Society of Mural Painters is deeply interested in the maintenance and administration by the American Academy in Rome of two scholarships for the advancement of the art of mural painting - the Lazarus scholarship and the one given by the Academy.
