Book The Maya Art of Speaking Writing

Download or read book The Maya Art of Speaking Writing written by Tiffany D. Creegan Miller and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging the distinctions between “old” and “new” media and narratives about the deprecation of orality in favor of inscribed forms, The Maya Art of Speaking Writing draws from Maya concepts of tz’ib’ (recorded knowledge) and tzij, choloj, and ch’owen (orality) to look at expressive work across media and languages. Based on nearly a decade of fieldwork in the Guatemalan highlands, Tiffany D. Creegan Miller discusses images that are sonic, pictorial, gestural, and alphabetic. She reveals various forms of creativity and agency that are woven through a rich media landscape in Indigenous Guatemala, as well as Maya diasporas in Mexico and the United States. Miller discusses how technologies of inscription and their mediations are shaped by human editors, translators, communities, and audiences, as well as by voices from the natural world. These texts push back not just on linear and compartmentalized Western notions of media but also on the idea of the singular author, creator, scholar, or artist removed from their environment. The persistence of orality and the interweaving of media forms combine to offer a challenge to audiences to participate in decolonial actions through language preservation. The Maya Art of Speaking Writing calls for centering Indigenous epistemologies by doing research in and through Indigenous languages as we engage in debates surrounding Indigenous literatures, anthropology, decoloniality, media studies, orality, and the digital humanities.

Book excerpt: Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960 - Present features artists, works, and themes that have defined Guatemala's contemporary art scene since the 1960s. The book brings together works that have rarely been seen outside Guatemala, but that speak to a range of formal, political and social concerns that permeate contemporary art both in Latin America and throughout the globe. Featuring artwork in a range of media that traces the tumultuous route that has traversed the history of Guatemala since the mid-twentieth century, the book is structured around the clusters or groups of works that represent central ideas, themes and media that have been pivotal in Guatemala's art over the last 50 plus years. These clusters are: art and politics; land, landscape, territory; popular cultures; racisms and identities; religion, spirituality, metaphysics; gender perspectives; violence and trauma; art histories; and formal experimentation. The book contains full-colour reproductions of the works , as well as essays that relay a wealth of new research, by curators and Guatemalan scholars Rosina Cazali Escobar, Silvia Herrera Ubico, Mario Roberto Morales and Martìn Fernàndez Ordóñez. Guatemala from 33,000 km is a visual record of many works that have not been previously documented and will itself be a product of contemporary Guatemalan artistic practitioners, and is designed by Ambush Studio which is based in Guatemala City. Published in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, in conjunction with the exhibition Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960--Present.

Book Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art

Download or read book Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art written by Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on 20th Century Latin American Art provides a broad synthesis of the subject through short chapters illustrated with reproductions of iconic works by artists who have made significant contributions to art and society. Designed as a teaching tool for non-art historians, the book's purpose is to introduce these important artists within a new scholarly context and recognize their accomplishments with those of others beyond the Americas and the Caribbean. The publication provides an in-depth analysis of topics such as political issues in Latin American art and art and popular culture, introducing views on artists and art-related issues that have rarely been addressed. Organized both regionally and thematically, it takes a unique approach to the exploration of art in the Americas, beginning with discussions of Modernism and Abstraction, followed by a chapter on art and politics from the 1960s to the 1980s. The author covers Spanish-speaking Central America and the Caribbean, regions not usually addressed in Latin American art history surveys. The chapter on Carnival as an expression of popular culture is a particularly valuable addition. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Latin American history, culture, art, international relations, gender studies, and sociology, as well as Caribbean studies.

Book excerpt: Tecún Umán tells the story of a wise and brave prince who led the Maya nation. He had many strong, brave warriors. They were skilled in battle. Sometimes Tecún Umán sat on his throne, but often he and his warriors had to fight to defend the freedom of their people. His spirit guide, in the form of a bird called the Quetzal, always flew by his side. Far across the ocean, King Charles V of Spain had heard of the wonderful treasures of the Maya nation. King Charles sent one of his generals, Don Pedro de Alvarado, to conquer that nation and claim it for the Spanish empire. Alvarado brought many armored conquistadors, horses, steel swords and lances, and guns. They were well-armed to fight for their king. They sailed many weeks to reach the Americas. When they arrived, Tecún Umán and his warriors fought bravely to defend their people from the Spanish invaders. During the battle, Alvarado struck Tecún Umán in the heart with his lance. Tecún Umán fell to the ground. The Quetzal flew to his dying friend, resting on the bloody chest of the prince. Since that day, the Quetzal always has a red breast. Saddened by the death of his beloved friend, he almost never sings. Like Tecún Umán, to live, he must be free. If caged, a Quetzal dies. Throughout Guatemala, Tecún Umán is celebrated as the national hero. He is honored on carved masks, coins, currency, monuments, and sculptures, but most importantly, he is honored in all the hearts of people who remember him.
