This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Artists of the Capitol of the United States of America It may not be safe to estimate the culture of a people by their progress in art attainments or art possessions. The necessities of those early years, the-strict economy of those days, left but little for expenditure in art directions, and to have a roof for shelter was considered wiser than to possess paintings or sculpture. Works of art could be acquired at a later time when the necessities had been provided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works of Art in the United States Capitol Building: Including Biographies of the Artists For the purpose of preserving in convenient form historical data relating to the artists whose works have been given a place in the United States Capitol, this compilation has been prepared. So far as possible the biographies included have been obtained from the artists represented or from their relatives. In instances where information has not been obtainable from such sources, it has been secured from various art publications, biographies found in other works, from the records in the Capitol, and from statements of persons having a personal acquaintance with the artists represented. In no instance has a comparative estimate of the relative standing of the artists been attempted. Such comparison belongs to the purposes of art criticism. A subject so largely dependent upon personal opinion is not properly included in the intent of this compilation. It may not, however, be out of place to make some reference to the works of art in the United States Capitol. The collection includes portraits by John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart, Chester Harding, Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Sully, Rembrandt Peale, John Vanderlyn, Ary Scheffer, John Neagle, and John Singer Sargent. Among historical painters are works by John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Robert W. Weir, W. H. Powell, J. G. Chapman, Seth Eastman, James Walker, and A. G. Heaton. Landscape painters are represented by examples of the work of Bierstadt and Moran; allegorical and decorative painters by works of Constantino Brumidi, Emanuel Leutze, and Filippo Costaggini. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Art Annual, 1911, Vol. 9 In the United States the art is of recent growth, and its results are little known by the public at large. The first of our great decorative artists was John La Farge, whose death is so recent that it comes within the year recorded in this volume. His first decoration of importance was executed in 1861 for the Church of the Paulist Fathers in New York City. In 1875 William Morris Hunt began the beautiful but ill-fated decorations of the State Capitol at Albany, N. Y., fragments of which are still in existence, but not accessible to the public. In 1876 Mr. La Farge undertook the decoration of Trinity Church, Boston, the first building in this country of which the entire decorative scheme was placed in the hands of an artist. Since that time the decorative arts have prospered wonderfully, and today there are scattered through the United States remarkable examples of mural painting, stained glass and mosaic of which our citizens may justly be proud. The future of mural painting in this country is of vital im portance, and the Society of Mural Painters is deeply interested in the maintenance and administration by the American Academy in Rome of two scholarships for the advancement of the art of mural painting - the Lazarus scholarship and the one given by the Academy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington, D. C: Capitol Dome, Excerpts From Newspapers and Other Sources I have asked myself certain questions many times, and no doubt you will repeat those same questions many more times: How can countless exquisite frescoes and paintings adorn our Capitol Build ing and yet the American people have little or no knowledge of their existence? How could an artist spend twenty-five years of his life in decorating this Capitol Building and then remain as nu known as his frescoes? How could a Government such as ours, that has rewarded so many for so much, forget the artist, Brumidi, and let him lie unhonored and unknown for almost seventy years in an unmarked grave? I cannot answer these questions. I can only record for you authenticated Brumidi facts in some such sequence as they have unfolded themselves to me during the twelve years I have been inspired by the artist's frescoes - all the time waiting for a poet or an artist to tell this story. I do know, however, that great service and sacrifice in our Democracy often are not rewarded until long years have slipped away. I know, too, that unjust criticism and ridicule can so befog the patriotic works of a good man that even half a century is often not long enough for those works to emerge in all their glory. Download or read book American Pantheon written by Donald R. Kennon and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the ancient Roman Pantheon, the U.S. Capitol was designed by its political and aesthetic arbiters to memorialize the virtues, events, and persons most representative of the nation's ideals--an attempt to raise a particular version of the nation's founding to the level of myth. American Pantheon examines the influences upon not only those virtues and persons selected for inclusion in the American pantheon, but also those excluded. Two chapters address the exclusion of slavery and African Americans from the art in the Capitol, a silence made all the more deafening by the major contributions of slaves and free black workers to the construction of the building. Two other authors consider the subject of women emerging as artists, subjects, patrons, and proponents of art in the Capitol, a development that began to emerge only in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Rotunda, the Capitol's principal ceremonial space, was designed in part as an art museum of American history--at least the authorized version of it. It is explored in several of the essays, including discussions of the influence of the early-nineteenth-century Italian sculptors who provided the first sculptural reliefs for the room and the contributions of the mid-nineteenth-century Italian American artist Constantino Brumidi, to the mix of allegory, mythology, and history that permeates the space and indeed the Capitol itself.
