So far as possible the biographies included have been obtained from the artists represented or from their relatives. In instances where information has not been obtainable from such sources, it has been secured from various art publications, biographies found in other works, from the records in the Capitol, and from statements of persons having a personal acquaintance with the artists represented. In no instance has a comparative estimate of the relative standing of the artists been attempted. Such comparison belongs to the purposes of art criticism.
