Download or read book Titanium Dioxide Photocatalysis written by Vladimiro Dal Santo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-05-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the seminal work of Fujishima et al. dates back to 1971, TiO2 still remains the most diffused and studied semiconductor, employed in photo-oxidation processes for cleantech (i.e., polluted water and air treatment), in solar fuel production (mainly hydrogen production by water photo splitting), and in Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) processes by CO2 photoreduction. The eleven articles, among them three reviews, in this book cover recent results and research trends of various aspects of titanium dioxide photocatalysis, with the chief aim of improving the final efficiency of TiO2-based materials. Strategies include doping, metal co-catalyst deposition, and the realization of composites with plasmonic materials, other semiconductors, and graphene. Photocatalysts with high efficiency and selectivity can be also obtained by controlling the precise crystal shape (and homogeneous size) and the organization in superstructures from ultrathin films to hierarchical nanostructures. Finally, the theoretical modeling of TiO2 nanoparticles is discussed and highlighted. The range of topics addressed in this book will stimulate the reader’s interest as well as provide a valuable source of information for researchers in academia and industry.

Book Hydrothermal Growth and Characterization of Titanium Dioxide Nanostructures for Use in Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

Download or read book Hydrothermal Growth and Characterization of Titanium Dioxide Nanostructures for Use in Dye Sensitized Solar Cells written by Judith D. Sorge and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world's energy needs continue to grow, next generation photovoltaic cells are in high demand because they offer the possibility of an inexpensive alternative to current energy production techniques. Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC's), utilize common materials and low cost commercialization techniques, which make them a compelling choice for research in this area. This research focuses on the titanium dioxide coating, which transfers electrons from the photoactive dye to the electrode. 3-4% efficient DSSC's using doctor bladed titanium dioxide coatings with a specific surface area of 55-60m2/g have been demonstrated in our laboratory. To enhance the efficiency of these cells, both the surface area and the electron conduction of the titania layer must be optimized. This has been done by utilizing high aspect ratio nanoparticles of titania instead of mesoporous layers formed with spherical particles. Anodization of titanium metal or anodic alumina membrane templating are common ways to produce nanorods, but involve complex processes leading toward expensive commercialization. This research instead focuses on the hydrothermal growth of nanofibrous titania on a titanium metal substrate, removing the need for dispersion and deposition procedures as well as using a low temperature processing method. Depending upon the formulation utilized, a variety of structures can be produced, from thick carpets of nanofiber strands to large platelets. The composition and morphology of the products have been characterized with respect to the growth conditions using electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The compositional analysis is used to investigate the complicated reaction mechanisms in the system. Coatings of titania nanotubes were then tested in the DSSC's, as were those with the titanium metal substrate acting as the photo anode. Modeling the geometric parameters of the different pore structures of the coatings helps us to understand the advantages afforded by these new cells.

Book Titania Nanostructures for Optoelectronics Applications

Download or read book Titania Nanostructures for Optoelectronics Applications written by Lili Wang and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium dioxide (titania) nanotubular structure discovered in 2001 have been attracting extensive interest due to their widely applications in photocatalysis, catalysis and solar cells. The final products of titania nanotube (TiNT) arrays can be synthesized in three forms. One is in form of ordered arrays attached to original Ti substrate, another one is in form of free-standing arrays and the last form is white powders. In this dissertation, we review the development history of these three types of TiNT arrays and introduce the fabrication process of TiNTs products in detail including morphology characterization, fabrication parameter study and optimization of synthesis condition. Since titania is a semiconductor with large band gap (3.2 eV), the large bandgap leads to only UV light absorption, which constitutes less than 5% of the whole solar spectrum. In order to efficiently harvest solar energy for the solar cells made of titania, several methods depositing TiNT arrays with metal oxides to improve the light harvesting are presented in this dissertation. A comprehensive study of forced hydrolysis method is carried out and investigated. Preliminary devices are built up in DSSCs concept based on the hybrid structure of TiO2/Fe22O3. Some important parameters, such as open circuit voltage (VOC), short circuit current (ISC), and fill factor (FF) are evaluated. Optical properties of the samples with the hybrid architecture are studied to achieve an optimal performance in DSSCs-type solar cells.
