Book excerpt: Founded in 1798, Windham is nestled in a mountain valley 130 miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains. Hemlock trees, needed for tanning leather, and farming were the economic base for the first settlers. In 1819, Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" ignited the curiosity of the public, who would be drawn to Windham's enchanting valleys and mountain peaks. Later, in the mid-19th century, the Hudson River School of painting presented the stunning beauty of the mountains through the works of world-famous artists such as Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. After the Civil War, steam-powered boats on the Hudson River transported the vacationing public in massive waves to Windham's boardinghouses, fueling an economic prosperity for well over 100 years. Following the summer tourism trade, skiing, outdoor recreation, and a burgeoning art community have become the bedrock of the town's economy. Around Windham presents a view of the area through historical images from local residents.

Book Out Windham Way

Download or read book Out Windham Way written by Larry Tompkins and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 400 illustrations culled from the author's remarkable collection of historic Catskill Mountain photographs, maps, and ephemera document the visual record of the Greene County villages of Windham, Prattsville, Ashland, Big Hollow (Maplecrest), Hensonville, and their outlying settlements such as East Windham, Union Society, Red Falls, Brook Lynne, and North Settlement from the 1890s through the 1940s. Settled shortly after the Revolution, these Catskill mountaintop communities began as a scattering of subsistence farms and mill towns harvesting forest resources. In the early 1800s turnpikes brought commerce and travelers, and the seeds were sown for what would become one of the premier summer vacation venues in Upstate New York. That hospitality tradition continues today as the region has become a year-round vacation destination with one of New York¿s largest and finest ski areas. Nearly forty years ago, Larry Tompkins, a seventh-generation resident of Greene County¿s Catskill mountaintop community, began collecting antique photographs, postcards and ephemera¿business cards, invoices, bills of sale, advertisements¿of the northern Catskill Mountains. Over the years that collection grew to become one of the most remarkable records of community life to be found anywhere in the Catskill Mountain region. The 400 photographs, maps, and ephemera in this book are just a sample.

Book excerpt: The compelling photographic images presented in Windham capture the unique character of this southern New Hampshire town. In 1719, Scotch-Irish settlers founded a thriving community known for fine linens, Presbyterian orthodoxy, country fairs, and the rollicking customs that made it a merry island amid a sea of dour Puritanism. Windham became a separate town in 1742 and prospered until the 1820s, when an exodus to the vast lands of the West and nearby industrial cities began. Life then became ordered by the quiet rhythms of country life. Villages later sprang up around Windham's three railroad stations, and city folks came to summer at boardinghouses and farms. Cottages were built along the shores of Cobbett's Pond and Canobie Lake, while multimillionaire Edward Searles indulged his flights of fancy by building a medieval castle here.

Download or read book Never a Choice written by Luann Conaty and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Luann Perhaps readers of this book still believe that homosexuality is perverted and evil. I understand all too well where people with those views are coming from. It has taken me many years to accept the idea that God accepts a union between two people of the same sex. No matter how anyone feels about this particular idea, the important thing to remember is that we must stop condemning and start loving. My journey to understanding is not over. I want to keep on growing and learning, but I hope that some of what I have learned can be helpful to others who are struggling to understand and to accept. This book includes a great deal of my spiritual philosophy because that is an important part of my story and an integral part of who I am. However, I believe that because I started with so many firmly entrenched misconceptions about homosexuality and because my religious training was so rigidly anti-gay, my journey was longer and more painful than it needs to be for many others. If someone who started out as an "Anita Bryant clone" can eventually march in a gay pride parade carrying a sign, "We love our gay kids," there's hope for anyone! From Andy As a man who grew up in a time when same-sex marriage was completely unthinkable, I find being married a wonderful (if unexpected) experience. My husband and I call each other "husband" all the time; it is our preferred term of endearment. And having had the opportunity to participate in one of the foundational rituals of love and partnership has added something in my life that I never even knew existed. I hope you have enjoyed our stories--we have enjoyed sharing them--and that you might take something with you to comfort or inspire you on your journey. I look forward to the next time our paths cross.
