Book A Journey Around the World Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Journey Around the World Classic Reprint written by Edwin S. George and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Around the World No one, however intelligent, could begin to tell the story of the countries and people referred to in this volume. This book sets forth the impressions made upon the author by the glimpses obtained in a journey around the world, and it must be remembered that im pressions can honestly differ among truthful, observing, studious travelers. This diary was written at the request of a loved one who was unable to accompany me, and with whom I thus hoped, in a small degree, to share my daily experiences, but with no thought of publication. Its publication is due far more to the encouraging suggestions of friends, than from any confident promptings of my own. The author claims no qualifications whatsoever as a writer, but endeavored at all times to keep his mind free from prejudices, and alert to everything about him, and espe cially endeavored to see the good in all things, but frank in his statements of facts as observed and noted herein. It was not, however, until we were bound for the Orient and had reached strange lands, inhabited by strange people, with strange customs, that I was aroused to any serious effort in the writing of a daily narrative in which I endeavored to reflect the conditions surrounding the writer, for examme: India, depressing; China, smiles; Korea, tragic; Japan, attractive but imperialistic. Book Around the World in 50 Years

Download or read book Around the World in 50 Years written by Albert Podell and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the inspiring story of an ordinary guy who achieved two great goals that others had told him were impossible. First, he set a record for the longest automobile journey ever made around the world, during the course of which he blasted his way out of minefields, survived a breakdown atop the Peak of Death, came within seconds of being lynched in Pakistan, and lost three of the five men who started with him, two to disease, one to the Vietcong. After that-although it took him forty-seven more years-Albert Podell set another record by going to every country on Earth. He achieved this by surviving riots, revolutions, civil wars, trigger-happy child soldiers, voodoo priests, robbers, pickpockets, corrupt cops, and Cape buffalo. He went around, under, or through every kind of earthquake, cyclone, tsunami, volcanic eruption, snowstorm, and sandstorm that nature threw at him. He ate everything from old camel meat and rats to dung beetles and the brain of a live monkey. And he overcame attacks by crocodiles, hippos, anacondas, giant leeches, flying crabs-and several beautiful girlfriends who insisted that he stop this nonsense and marry them. Albert Podell's Around the World in 50 Years is a remarkable and meaningful tale of quiet courage, dogged persistence, undying determination, and an uncanny ability to extricate himself from one perilous situation after another-and return with some of the most memorable, frightening, and hilarious adventure stories you have ever read.

Book From Independence Hall Around the World Classic Reprint

Download or read book From Independence Hall Around the World Classic Reprint written by F. Carroll Brewster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Independence Hall Around the World Nowadays, when the facilities of travel on the one hand, and of publication on the other, have made both a voyage around the globe and the printing of its narrative a common-place matter, there is need of something in the way of an apology for the bringing out of another book of this kind. Apart from the fact that Judge Brewster's notes of his journey, originally made only as private memoranda, have been published in response, primarily, to many requests to that end, a broader reason for the present work will be found by the reader in the freshness and simplicity of the voyager's recital, in its freedom from the conventional spirit of traveler's tales, in its pointed expression of unbiased views regarding the places and the peoples that he describes. The chronicle of Judge Brewster's journey is clearly that of a keen observer, whose considerations are the reflections of a disciplined mind, whose statements are those of an unprepossessed reporter, and whose narrative is presented as a simple and unvarnished tale. Book Twenty Years Around the World Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twenty Years Around the World Classic Reprint written by John Guy Vassar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-23 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years Around the World Early in life the author of these letters suffered from ill health, and necessity obliged him to seek more genial climes in order to escape the rigors of our northern winters. Duty towards his only brother and a beloved uncle induced him to sketch his travels, and keep them advised of his movements. His letters passing into the hands of kind friends, for perusal, led to further inquiries and demands for publication in a weekly paper in his native city, were the result. He has always hesitated to come before the Public, although constantly solicited and urged by his friends to do so, as a duty he owed to society; at length, through constant i'mportuning, and to avoid the clamors of those he loves and esteems, he has concluded to accede to their wishes. This book is the result. Travelling becomes a passion with some, and in this instance, a decided one. Necessity at first, with improvement in health, and finding himself better on the move than when quiet, sight seeing and obtaining general information became more and more desirable. After having seen every State and Capital in his own country, his desire was to visit every Capital in Europe. After having seen the antiquities and works of art of Italy, Greece, and Tur key, his ambition led him to see the older objects of Egypt and Asia Minor. Then came the desire to visit the Celestial Empire, and the East Indian world. The West Indian Islands brought a disposition to see those of the Pacific, and those of the Mediterranean, the Levant, and the Polynesian, Canary, Cape de Verde, Azores. North America. Book Around the World Due West to the Far East Classic Reprint

Download or read book Around the World Due West to the Far East Classic Reprint written by Robert Stuart Macarthur and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the World, Due West to the Far East This volume would have appeared sooner but for a disastrous fire which necessitated delay; but it has been thought wise to allow the text to remain as it was originally written. The author indulged in some rather bold prophecies regard ing the relation of Hawaii to the United States, and also touching other matters; and it is strangely interesting to see how literally history has fulfilled these predictions. If the reader can get any part of the enjoy ment out of this trip which the writer had in making the journey, investigating historical facts, and recording his Observations, the reader will not have read, nor the writer have traveled and written, in vain. Book Around the World on a Bicycle Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the World on a Bicycle I have only read specimen chapters of this book, but find in them the same simple and manly quality which attracted us all when Mr. Stevens told his story in person. It is pleasant to know that while peace reigns in America, a young man can always find an opportunity to take his life in his hand and orig inate some exploit as good as those of the much-wandering Ulysses. In the German story a Titan, Jean Paul describes a manly youth who longed for an adventure for his idle brav ery and it is pleasant to read the narrative of one who has quietly gone to work, in an honest way, to satisfy this longing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twice Around the World One of those early dreams was a cruise around the world, the world that then seemed so far away. Your fancy saw it as a skyline of minarets and pagodas and pinnacles, as a panorama of the yellow and the brown and the black in quaint and resplendent costumes, as a menagerie of elephants and camels and tigers. Your ear caught the call of the muezzin, the drone of the shorn priest beneath the tinkling temple bells, the clang of the cymbals in the Orient theatre, the jingle of the anklets in the dance hall, the piping of the cobra charmer, the guttural growl of the camel, the hoarse trumpeting of the elephant, and the long, piercing note of the jungle-bird. To your nostrils came the smoke of incense, the perfume of sandalwood, the Spice-laden breezes of emerald isles in summer seas. Oh, it was a wonderful world, and you would sail around it and see it all - you, when Your Ship came in! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip Around the World These papers were first printed in the "Leominster Daily Enterprise." At the request of many who read them, I have endeavored to put them in more compact and attractive form. I have made no pretense of literary excellence, or of a deep insight into the history, religion, nature, or habits of the people of the countries through which I have traveled. It would take years of observation and study to attain to that, and volumes to record the results. I have endeavored to give only a very imperfect pen-and-ink sketch of what I saw, heard, and felt. If there are any who have the patience to follow me around the world, from Leominster to Leominster, and if I shall afford them but a small part of the benefit, instruction, and pleasure that the trip has afforded me, then I shall have been amply repaid for the writing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
