Ideally, the commander seeks to surprise the enemy and achieve an unopposed landing when conducting a vertical envelopment. However, the assault force must prepare for the presence of opposition. At the tactical level, vertical envelopments focus on seizing terrain, destroying specific enemy forces, and interdicting enemy withdrawal routes.

Book excerpt: Air Assault is a combat insertion unit using helicopters to transport and insert soldiers into battle, provide medical evacuation, provide close air support, provide resupply operations. It is usually a company or bat-talion sized element. The term Air Assault derives from two types of operations known as Air Mobility and Vertical Envelopment. Air Mobility Operations were de-veloped by the German Army during WWII in the 1930‘s. The US Army soon adopted this method of offensive operations in 1941 using wooden gliders. The glider was assisted into the air by being towed by a larger aircraft and then released. The pilot had to navigate the large glider loaded with a team of infantry soldiers to the landing zone behind enemy lines, at night and attempt to land safely. Once the pilot landed the glider, he would join the mission as another infantry soldier with the team that he flew in. Although the gliders and techniques used were advanced for that time period they did pose some disadvantages. Once the aircraft was landed safely that team of soldiers were cut off from allied troops. Pilots had to be cross trained with infantry tactics so he could operate as both roles. The air mobility glider was abandoned after WWII after the invention of the helicopter. PREFACE 1 November 2011 1. The Sabalauski Air Assault School (TSAAS) is a FORSCOM TDA unit that trains leaders and Soldiers assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), as well as other Army units and armed services in several courses. By conducting the Air Assault and Pathfinder Courses The Sabalauski Air Assault School develops technically proficient and confident Soldiers capable of safely executing immediate and sustained air assault operations. The school also trains and qualifies military Rappel Masters, Fast Rope Masters and SPIES Masters in the application of infiltration and extraction techniques. The school provides quality basic airborne refresher and jumpmaster refresher training to airborne capable units. Finally, the school provides command and control of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Screaming Eagle Parachute Team. 2. This handbook is designed to facilitate the mission of the school, serving as a baseline of information for the Air Assault Course. It is not a substitute for applicable Army regulations, field manuals, training circulars, or technical manuals, but it is designed to complement the guidance in these publications in the area of air assault operations. The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) disclaims any responsibility for incidents occurring while applying these procedures. 3. The urban environment, consisting of complex terrain, dense populations, and integrated infrastructures, is the predominant operational environment in which Army forces currently operate. Each urban environment is unique and differs because of the combinations presented by the enemy, the urban area itself, the major operation of which it may be part (or the focus), and always changing societal and geopolitical considerations. Enemy forces will take advantage of this complex environment by intermingling with the populace. ATTP 3-06.11 describes the fundamental principles, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) of urban operations (UO) across full spectrum operations, using the UO operational construct (understand, shape, engage, consolidate, and transition) to outline the discussions. ATTP 3-06.11 is based on current BCT structure and lessons learned from ongoing UO. ATTP 3-06.11 primarily addresses offensive and defensive operations in an urban environment. Stability operations are briefly discussed in the context of transition considerations. Stability operations are inherently among the people and generally in urban environments. Field manual (FM) 3-07 is the source manual for stability doctrine and addresses BCT considerations for conducting stability UO. FM 3-07.1 is the primary source for BCT and below considerations for interaction and support to host nation (HN) security forces. This material is not repeated in ATTP 3-06.11. This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG)/Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. The proponent for this publication is the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). The preparing agency is the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE). Urban operations are among the most difficult and challenging missions a BCT can undertake. Most UO are planned and controlled at division or corps level but executed by BCTs. The unified action environment of UO enables and enhances the capabilities of the BCT to plan, prepare, and execute offensive, defensive, and stability operations. Urban operations are Infantry-centric combined arms operations that capitalize on the adaptive and innovative leaders at the squad, platoon, and company level. Combined arms is the synchronized and simultaneous application of the elements of combat power to achieve an effect greater than if each element of combat power was used separately or sequentially. The eight elements of combat power are leadership, information, movement and maneuver, intelligence, fires, sustainment, mission command, and protection. Leadership and information are applied through, and multiply the effects of, the other six elements of combat power. These six-movement and maneuver, intelligence, fires, sustainment, mission command, and protection-are collectively described as the warfighting functions. (See FM 3-0 for details.) The BCT is the Army's largest fixed combined arms organization and the primary close combat force. A key component in UO is the inherent ability of the BCT to tailor its force to meet the requirements of the urban environment. This introduction provides an overview of UO considerations that shape the subsequent discussions of operations at BCT and below.

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) has a long and rich heritage. As the world's only functional Air Assault Division, the 101st Airborne has pioneered the development of Air Assault tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs). These tactics were quantifiably demonstrated in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm and most recently during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are currently at war with dangerous and adaptive terrorist forces in complex environments. Simultaneously, the Division must remain poised to confront peer threats on a conventional battlefield. In response, the Division continually refines its TTPs, exploiting our unique capabilities to defeat our nation's enemies. These manuals' currency fluctuates in the changing environment and do not often capture the required level of detail. Therefore, the Gold Book serves to describe those TTPs unique to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). It is intended to be a "how-to" guide for those serving in the Division and those modular units who will be employed with the Division in training and combat operations. The Gold Book retains a focus on brigade and battalion air assault task forces. To address the demands of current operations, information on smaller scale air assaults and supporting operations is included.
