Book Using Innovative Knowledge Management Tools for Information Technology Development Acquisition and Integration in the United States Army

Download or read book Using Innovative Knowledge Management Tools for Information Technology Development Acquisition and Integration in the United States Army written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether or not the Army is effectively and adequately employing innovative (IP-based) knowledge management (KM) tools to manage the knowledge of information technology (IT) development, acquisition, and integration. A world of unmanaged IT information is available to the military from various commercial and government sources that could improve its IT requirements analysis, efficiency of acquisition, and stewardship of taxpayer dollars in this age of rapidly changing technologies. This important issue is a leadership challenge for all officers to effectively and adequately employ KM to exploit synergies, gain efficiencies, and economies of scale that ultimately save taxpayer dollars and lives. This study is an investigation into the tacit and explicit knowledge of IT that the Army offers for IT development, acquisition, and integration. Case studies of the two current innovative Army KM systems and two potential non-DoD KM models were conducted. These KM systems are: the Battle Command Knowledge System (BCKS), the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL), Amazon.com, and BaseOps.net. In addition to these four formal case, seven more Army and Department of Defense (DoD) IT acquisition and KM organizations are investigated for their role and responsibility in tax stewardship, requirements development, and acquisition efficiencies.

Book Knowledge Management Operations FM 6 01 1

Download or read book Knowledge Management Operations FM 6 01 1 written by Department Army and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army embraced knowledge management (KM) as a discipline in 2003. How the Army manages information and facilitates the movement of knowledge has changed dramatically in recent years. This includes the growth of KM within the Army and refinement of associated technology-both hardware and software. Recognizing that the ability to efficiently manage knowledge is essential to effective mission command, the Army authorized the Army Knowledge Management Qualification Course (AKMQ-C), with additional skill identifier (ASI) to prepare Soldiers for KM's complex challenges. KM sections at brigade through theater army headquarters now work with commanders and staffs to help manage knowledge within their organizations; bridging the art of command and the science of control through KM. KM can be summarized in the phrase "Know, Show, Grow!" Know = tacit "head knowledge"; Show = knowledge that is written down and documented (explicit knowledge) to be shared with others; Grow = collaboration toward innovation which sparks new knowledge. What individuals and small elements know that could help others cannot be widely shared without the means to share it. The sheer volume of available information makes it difficult to identify and use that which is relevant. Knowledge management provides the means to efficiently share knowledge, thus enabling shared understanding and learning within organizations. To do this, KM creates, organizes, applies, and transfers knowledge and information between authorized people. It seeks to align people, processes, and tools-to include information technology-within the organization to continuously capture, maintain, and re-use key information and lessons learned to help units learn and adapt and improve mission performance. KM enhances an organization's ability to detect and remove obstacles to knowledge flow, thereby fostering mission success. Because collaboration is the key contributor to KM, it is imperative that everyone be involved in the process, from the generating force that trains and sustains the Soldier to the operating force, which ensures Soldiers survive and thrive every day in every circumstance or location. The contributions of everyone are important because anyone may be the source of an idea that may become the catalyst for a solution that accomplishes missions and saves lives. Though the focus of this document is operations, KM can be used by organizations and individuals to accomplish many tasks. This manual and its successors are intended to provide the guidance on how to use KM successfully to benefit Soldiers at the tip of the spear as well as commanders and staff, in present and future operational environments, in an era of persistent conflict. This manual, "Knowledge Management Operations," provides doctrinal knowledge management (KM) guidance. It provides doctrine for the organization and operations of the KM section, and establishes the doctrinal principles, tactics, techniques, and procedures necessary to effectively integrate KM into the operations of brigades and higher. FM 6-01.1 applies to KM activities in Army headquarters from brigade through Army service component command. ("Brigade" includes brigade combat teams, support brigades, functional brigades, and multifunctional brigades.) It applies to the KM section as well as to commanders, staffs, and Army leaders who will have a role in improving KM effectiveness or implementing KM procedures in their organizations. FM 6-01.1 applies to the Active Army, Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and U.S. Army Reserve unless otherwise stated. The Army currently leads the effort to develop doctrine for KM; thus Army headquarters serving as the headquarters of a joint force land component command or joint task force may adapt this field manual with appropriate modifications until joint doctrine or guidance is provided.

Book Knowledge Management in an Information Age Army

Download or read book Knowledge Management in an Information Age Army written by Darrell D. Fountain and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread application of advanced information technologies has dramatically affected United States fighting forces. Senior leaders at all levels that came of age as principals before the technological revolution of the 90's have struggled to take full advantage of modern information technology. Information technology exploitation strategies have been further complicated by the now omnipresent Joint and Combined nature of our operations. Key leaders need to more fully embrace the comprehensive strategy already available to take full advantage of this explosion in capability. This work examines the Army's current knowledge management strategy and suggests that a consistent construct is required at the CORPS and Division level to fully exploit current information technology capabilities in a joint and combined environment. This construct is required to move our fighting forces beyond the simplistic incorporation of the latest information technology hardware and software to a more deliberate knowledge management strategy: the logical extension of the information age technology and network-centric operations to effective Knowledge Management. This organizational construct should be disciplined enough to resist the latest hardware/software solution of the day and agile enough to readily adopt innovative information technology solutions addressing critical organizational information sharing and knowledge management challenges.

Book Army Knowledge Management AKM

Download or read book Army Knowledge Management AKM written by Jackie J. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges exist in the areas of information technology and knowledge sharing throughout the Army. Organizations have tremendous amounts of information on computers but find it hard to share the information or knowledge outside of their community. Army Knowledge Management (AKM) is the answer to this challenge and provides the Army strategy to transform itself into a network-centric, knowledge-based force. AKM is an integrated, systematic approach to identifying, managing, and sharing virtually all of the Army's information assets, including databases, documents, policies and procedures, as well as previously unarticulated expertise and experience resident in individual workers. This paper centers on the problem of knowledge sharing and the protection of information networks in the Army. It begins with the challenges we face today in the areas of information technology and knowledge sharing. It reiterates knowledge sharing in our senior leadership's strategies, joint visions, and quadrennial review. It covers the importance of learning from our commercial industry counterparts. It communicates the Army's leadership vision, involvement, purpose, and goals of AKM. Finally, the paper addresses the challenges and recommended solutions for knowledge sharing and the protection of information networks through information assurance (IA).

Book Creating a Knowledge Management Strategy

Download or read book Creating a Knowledge Management Strategy written by Jeffrey J. Lepak and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army needs to reaffirm Knowledge Management as the means to supporting its Army's Strategic Strategy for the 21st Century of transforming itself into a network centric knowledge-based force. The best way to do this is for the Army to write an Army Knowledge Management Strategy that lays out a vision to shape the entire Army into a knowledge-based force for the next twenty or thirty years. The strategy would provide a unity of effort for the Army enterprise, which is currently operating piece meal. With a common Knowledge Management strategy, the Army would direct TRADOC in coordination with FORSCOM to develop a plan to change the current cultural mindset and Army doctrine to meet its strategic goals. The forces would affirm these newly developed Knowledge Management processes through daily use, training and exercises. HQDA G6/CIO, who is responsible for the Information Management strategy, would tailor the Information technology resources operating the enterprise appropriately to support the Knowledge Management strategy.
