Book U S Army Uniforms and Equipment 1889

Download or read book U S Army Uniforms and Equipment 1889 written by Quartermaster General of the Army and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1986-06-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued. It is a valuable reference for articles used during the 1870s and 1880s, the period of the Indian wars. For much of the nineteenth century, the production of military clothing and equipment was geared to national emergencies. During the Mexican and Civil wars, the hardpressed Quartermaster Department was forced to rely on civilian and, later, European suppliers. A contract system too often resulted in profiteering, inferior goods, and administrative confusion. By 1887 reforms in the system were accompanied by strict specifications for matäriel, which were published by the War Department in 1889 and distributed to fewer than sixty officers in the Quartermaster Department. Never before reprinted, this rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued, from mosquito bars and tent stoves to overalls for mounted men and uniform coat buttons ("the burnishing to be done in the best manner known to the trade"). This valuable reference for articles used by the army during the period of the Indian wars will be of special interest to collectors, historians, archaeologists, curators, and antique dealers.

Book Army of None Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War

Download or read book Army of None Autonomous Weapons and the Future of War written by Paul Scharre and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book I had been waiting for. I can't recommend it highly enough." —Bill Gates The era of autonomous weapons has arrived. Today around the globe, at least thirty nations have weapons that can search for and destroy enemy targets all on their own. Paul Scharre, a leading expert in next-generation warfare, describes these and other high tech weapons systems—from Israel’s Harpy drone to the American submarine-hunting robot ship Sea Hunter—and examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. “A smart primer to what’s to come in warfare” (Bruce Schneier), Army of None engages military history, global policy, and cutting-edge science to explore the implications of giving weapons the freedom to make life and death decisions. A former soldier himself, Scharre argues that we must embrace technology where it can make war more precise and humane, but when the choice is life or death, there is no replacement for the human heart.

While this is not a big deal for a 5 or 10-page document, many DoD documents are over 400 pages and printing a large document is a time- consuming effort. So, a person that's paid $25 an hour is spending hours simply printing out the tools needed to do the job. That's time that could be better spent doing mission. Book World War II US Army Combat Equipments

Download or read book World War II US Army Combat Equipments written by Gordon L. Rottman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A soldier's “web gear” is as important to his ability to live and fight on the battlefield as are his clothing and weapons. In World War II the US Army issued equipment items that had originated in 1910, though modified and augmented in the 1920s and 1930s, and again during the war itself as a result of combat experience. This book describes and illustrates the great majority of the personal equipment provided for infantry riflemen, GIs armed with other weapons and their ammunition-bearers, officers, and medics. In addition to the web gear itself it covers canteens, mess kit, and first aid items; weapons-related and other specialist items; the long struggle to produce a practical backpack; bivouac and shelter gear, and the most commonly carried tools. The text also explains the basics of materials, colors, markings, nomenclature, and weights for the guidance of collectors. It is illustrated with wartime photos and color close-ups, and the wide-ranging color plates specially prepared for this book offer more than 130 images.

Download or read book The US Army Soldier written by Aurélian Morel and published by Histoire Et Collections. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the way the battlefield has evolved over the last ten years, the soldier's equipment has had to evolve accordingly. Although the media often shows the US Army Boys right in the heart of the fighting in Afghanistan, and up until recently in Iraq, their equipment, material, and weapons have never been shown in detail. This book has now done this, drawing up an exhaustive list of the equipment used by the US Army's infantryman (but also the helicopter pilots and the armored vehicle drivers) - from the boots to the wrist computer, via the assault rifle and the winter uniform - and the programs intended to make the soldier even quicker, even more effective and better protected.
