Book Security Arms Control and Defence Restructuring in East Asia

Download or read book Security Arms Control and Defence Restructuring in East Asia written by Bjørn Møller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume examines East Asia, especially Northeast Asia, which has been a region of considerable political security of importance for several key reasons. It features several great and medium powers: China, Japan and Russia, as well as North and South Korea. Even though no arms race is yet discernible among these states (with the partial exception of the two Koreas), it is conceivable that one might commence. If it did, the level of militarization could become quite alarming, if only because of the tremendous and rapidly growing economic potential of the regional states. Even though relations among regional sates (except the two Koreas) are currently peaceful, the region features several unresolved issues (e.g. concerning territory) and a historical legacy of enmity between several states. To prevent such conflicts of interest from erupting into armed conflict is of the utmost importance. A stabilizing factor is that the military potentials in the region are still predominantly defensively oriented, i.e. most states lack the requisite power projection or invasion capabilities to inflict serious harm on each other. However, this might change in the not-so-distant future. Hence the importance of confidence-building measures; of an institutionalization of regional relations; and of a strengthening of commitments to defensive military strategies and postures.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book uses the concept of the 'arms dynamic' to identify and assess the various factors that influenced the arms acquisitions of some South-East Asian states during the Second Cold War period from 1979 to 1989. Its comprehensive and systematic explanation of the pattern of behaviour in arms procurement in South-East Asia in the 1980s provides a substantial basis for understanding contemporary developments." "Looking at the key pressures that influenced the arms acquisitions of the states concerned, such as external threat assessment, the requirements of defence policy and strategy, technology and the role of extra-regional powers, the text also explores their variation between states and over time. This volume provides an excellent case study for courses on strategic studies, international relations and military history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Sulu Arms Market

Download or read book The Sulu Arms Market written by Lino Miani and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 2011 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated in a remote area long a historical buffer zone between competing political entities, the Sulu Arms Market is an illicit market of a typical form in that it is both a source and a destination for less-than-legal guns. What makes the Sulu market unique is its longevity which is measured in centuries. In modern times, guns from the area supply conflicts and crime from Japan to Sri Lanka to Papua New Guinea and beyond; and in turn the world pours guns and ammunition into Mindanao, the Maluku (Molucca) Islands, and to a lesser extent, Malaysia and the rest of the Philippines. Like most black arms pipelines, the Sulu Arms Market is intertwined with piracy, terrorism, and the traffic of other illicit commodities. Criminal gangs, communists, Moro independence groups, and Islamic militants are all major players in the market, making it a security problem for at least five member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Book Dangerous Flashpoints in East Asia The Military Build up

East Asia has until recently experienced the fastest regional economic growth rate in the world for many years. Economic co-operation has been flourishing and economic interests have become the major reason in reshaping East Asian international relations. However, there have also been changes in the security environment, due to many factors, such as the reduction of US forces in East Asia, the disintegration of the Soviet Union (the decline of the Soviet Union’s presence in the region had led to renewed attention to traditional and potential rivalries among the major East Asian powers), and the concern of China’s hegemonistic ambitions.

Book Explaining ASEAN

Download or read book Explaining ASEAN written by Shaun Narine and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is ASEAN the foundation of a strong regional community in Southeast Asia? Or is it no more than an instrument used by its members to advance their individual interests? Addressing these questions, Shaun Narine offers a comprehensive political analysis of ASEAN from its creation in 1967 through the events of 2001. Reflecting both the accomplishments and the limitations of the organization, Explaining ASEAN explores issues of regional security, economic stability - and the growing expectations of the international community. Narine's trenchant analysis makes it clear that, unless ASEAN can resolve the problems of inadequate resources and disagreements among the member states, its future as an effective, active international regime is doubtful.
