Book English Ironwork of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries

Download or read book English Ironwork of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries written by J Starkie Gardner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title comes with a new Introduction by Bethan Griffiths and Peter Milington. We are fortunate today that there is a far greater understanding and appreciation of our heritage, and how it should be cared for, than there was at the time J. Starkie Gardner's book was written. For the many people interested in and involved with the care and conservation of heritage ironwork "English Ironwork of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries" is an invaluable reference, not just for researching specific pieces but also for understanding the historic context of the ironwork of the period. It is also full of illustrations of once surviving examples in need of repair, and these photographs can give clues to their original form. Where ironwork has gone missing, the information can help to inform the design of replica work. There are few books on decorative historical ironwork and the small number there are highlight the fact that, overall, the subject of wrought ironwork has been insufficiently studied and is a rich field for cataloguing and research. Within the pages of Starkie Gardner's book are clues to the identification of further pieces of ironwork, particularly the many he did not cover, from which there is still much to learn. It is hoped that reissue of the book acts as an inspiration to those involved with the study, care and refurbishment of ironwork to continue the work he started in the recording and sharing of ironwork discoveries. However, the huge amount of surviving work of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries should not be forgotten as of this also too little is known; here again there is need for further cataloguing and research.

Book Armour in England From the Earliest Times to the Reign of James the First Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armour in England From the Earliest Times to the Reign of James the First IT is the nature of islands to exhibit some peculiarities in their fauna and flora, and this insularity is no less pronounced in the manners and customs of the human beings inhabiting them. Thus even the stone implements of Britain of remote prehistoric days can readily be distin guished by the expert and we have the authority of Sir John Evans for regarding our types of bronze celts and weapons as both peculiar and indigenous. On first taking a place in history several strange and extra European customs were noticed in these isles by Caesar, such as the use of chariots in war, and dyeing the skin blue with woad: British nations were, moreover, frequently ruled by queens, and some practised the rare and difficult, and very far from barbaric, art of enamelling on bronze. Book The Armourer and His Craft

Download or read book The Armourer and His Craft written by Charles John Ffoulkes and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As soon as the armed man realized that iron and steel were the best defences for his body, he would naturally insist that some sort of a guarantee should be given him of the efficacy of the goods supplied by his armourer. This system of proving armour would be effected by using those weapons commonly in use, and these, in the early times, were the sword, the axe, the lance, the bow, and the crossbow. The latter seems to have been the more common forms of proof, though as late as the seventeenth century we have evidence that armour was proved with the "estramaon" or sword blow. -from "The Proof of Armour" Not a history of defensive armor but rather a guide to the actual making of armor, as well as the regulations that governed the artisans who made it, this is a fascinating-and practical-handbook on the production, selling, and wearing metal traditional medieval body armor. First published in 1912, this classic book-by British historian and author CHARLES JOHN FFOULKES (1868-1947), curator of London's Royal Armouries-draws on records of the time to detail the tools and appliances of the trade, the decoration and cleaning of armor, the use of leather and fabrics, and much more to offer a complete reference for readers of period fiction and history, wargamers, costumers, and anyone fascinated by the craft of the armorer. This replica of the 1912 edition is complete with all of the original diagrams, illustrations, and photos.
