Book The Lausanne Treaty Turkey and Armenia

Download or read book The Lausanne Treaty Turkey and Armenia written by American Committee Opposed to the Lausanne Treaty and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays, as well as the text of the treaty and letters to and from members of the government. The basis for the Committee's opposition to the treaty is that it does not punish the perpetrators of the Armenian genocide. Moreover the Committee asserts the right of Armenians to an independent state supported by the United States. The essays attack the issue from a variety of standpoints, including humanitarian, on the basis of honor, and as a matter of economic/political weakness--specifically, in that the treaty ended foreign "rights" to extraterritorial privileges within Turkey. A common thread is that most of the essays are from a Christian standpoint: the writers assert that the killing of Armenians is especially terrible because they are Christians being killed by Muslims, or that the treaty itself is anti-Christian.

Book The Spirit of the Laws

Download or read book The Spirit of the Laws written by Taner Akçam and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pertinent to contemporary demands for reparations from Turkey is the relationship between law and property in connection with the Armenian Genocide. This book examines the confiscation of Armenian properties during the genocide and subsequent attempts to retain seized Armenian wealth. Through the close analysis of laws and treaties, it reveals that decrees issued during the genocide constitute central pillars of the Turkish system of property rights, retaining their legal validity, and although Turkey has acceded through international agreements to return Armenian properties, it continues to refuse to do so. The book demonstrates that genocides do not depend on the abolition of the legal system and elimination of rights, but that, on the contrary, the perpetrators of genocide manipulate the legal system to facilitate their plans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interventions on behalf of Armenia and Armenians have come to be identified by scholars and practitioners alike as defining moments in the history of humanitarianism. This volume reassesses these claims, critically examining a range of interventions by governments, international and diasporic organizations, and individuals that aimed to ‘save Armenians’. Drawing on perspectives from a range of disciplines, the chapters trace the evolution of these interventions from the late-nineteenth to the present day, paying particular attention to the aftermaths of the genocide and the upheavals of the post-Soviet period. Geographically, the contributions connect diverse spaces and places – the Caucasus, Russia, the Middle East, Europe, North America, South America, and Australia – revealing shifting transnational networks of aid and intervention. These chapters are followed by reflections from leading scholars in the fields of refugee history and Armenian history, Peter Gatrell and Ronald Grigor Suny. Aid to Armenia not only offers an innovative exploration into the history of Armenia and Armenians and the history of humanitarianism, but it provides a platform for practitioners to think critically about contemporary humanitarian questions facing Armenia, the South Caucasus region and the wider Armenian diaspora.

Book Looking Backward Moving Forward

Download or read book Looking Backward Moving Forward written by Richard G. Hovannisian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades separating our new century from the Armenian Genocide, the prototype of modern-day nation-killings, have fundamentally changed the political composition of the region. Virtually no Armenians remain on their historic territories in what is today eastern Turkey. The Armenian people have been scattered about the world. And a small independent republic has come to replace the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was all that was left of the homeland as the result of Turkish invasion and Bolshevik collusion in 1920. One element has remained constant. Notwithstanding the eloquent, compelling evidence housed in the United States National Archives and repositories around the world, successive Turkish governments have denied that the predecessor Young Turk regime committed genocide, and, like the Nazis who followed their example, sought aggressively to deflect blame by accusing the victims themselves. This volume argues that the time has come for Turkey to reassess the propriety of its approach, and to begin the process that will allow it move into a post-genocide era. The work includes "Genocide: An Agenda for Action," Gijs M. de Vries; "Determinants of the Armenian Genocide," Donald Bloxham; "Looking Backward and Forward," Joyce Apsel; "The United States Response to the Armenian Genocide," Simon Payaslian; "The League of Nations and the Reclamation of Armenian Genocide Survivors," Vahram L.
