But for author Ken Lamberton, a forty-five-year veteran of life in the Sonoran Desert, the entertaining results were anything but easy. In Chasing Arizona, Lamberton takes readers on a yearlong, twenty-thousand-mile joyride across Arizona during its centennial, racking up more than two hundred points of interest along the way. Lamberton chases the four corners of Arizona, attempts every county, every reservation, and every national monument and state park, from the smallest community to the largest city. He drives his Kia Rio through the longest tunnels and across the highest suspension bridges, hikes the hottest deserts, and climbs the tallest mountain, all while visiting the people, places, and treasures that make Arizona great. In the vivid, lyrical, often humorous prose the author is known for, each destination weaves together stories of history, nature, and people, along with entertaining side adventures and excursions. Maps and forty-four of the author’s detailed pencil drawings illustrate the journey. Chasing Arizona is unlike any book of its kind. It is an adventure story, a tale of Arizona, a road-warrior narrative. It is a quest to see and experience as much of Arizona as possible. Through intimate portrayals of people and place, readers deeply experience the Grand Canyon State and at the same time celebrate what makes Arizona a wonderful place to visit and live.

Book excerpt: M. Kienholz is one of the Northwest’s most versatile poets. Amy Woodward Fisher, former chairman of Washington State’s Poetry Day, described Kienholz’ style as incorporating “rhythm and imagery;” however, her poetry has an even broader definition. Her historical poetry ranges like a world traveler through human pathos, achievement, and brutality. Here, she addresses experiences of Native Americans, Chinese, and Japanese in the West, presents incisive descriptions of Northwest personalities and biographical sketches of more than thirty New World explorers. Her children’s poetry can be enjoyed equally by parents and children. She gives her animals personalities and dramatizes their worlds. Kienholz’ love poetry covers all the convolutions of the mating game. Much humor is evident in her serious poems, as well as in her “doggerel and other stuff.” Kienholz’ skillful use of poetic devices provides teachers with tools to explain poetry to students. Her poetry has won honors in many competitions as listed in the Appendix. Book Definiteness in Bulgarian

Download or read book Definiteness in Bulgarian written by Olga M. Mladenova and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its evolution from a synthetic to an analytic language, Bulgarian acquired a grammaticalized category of definiteness. The book presents the first attempt to explore in detail how this happened by comparing the earliest Modern Bulgarian texts with contemporary dialect and standard Bulgarian data. The basic units of analysis are the various types of nominal structures headed by nouns or pronouns. The analysis requires the strict terminological disentanglement of form from content and the adoption of a default inheritance model of definiteness that allow the exhaustive classification and tagging of nominal structures encountered in the texts. Tagging makes it possible to apply quantitative analysis to nominal structure and to assess the types available in the early texts from a current native-speaker perspective. Based on an S-curve model of language change, the study establishes that overt markers of definiteness were first made available to identifiability-based definites, then to inclusiveness-based definites, quantitative generics and unique referents. The overt markers of indefiniteness followed suit, separating indefinites from non-specifics and typifying generics. This progression of definiteness was directed by variables such as person, animacy, gender, number and noun-class, and started in contexts in which definiteness closely interacted with possessivity. Such an analysis leads to the realization that the two-dimensional S-curve model does not account for all language change and that there is a need for a three-dimensional model. It also demonstrates that, contrary to previous assumptions, there is continuity between the early Slavic marker of definiteness (long-form adjectives) and the Modern Bulgarian article. This discovery, in conjunction with geolinguistic arguments, sheds new light on the role that relations inside the Balkan Sprachbund played in the grammaticalization of Bulgarian definiteness.
