The story of Argyle teaches that failure is often a path to success and celebrates perseverance, creative thinking, and an old-fashioned springtime activity.

Book excerpt: The remote Kimberley region of Western Australia has a rich history and unique geography. In the 1960s De Beers, the world’s largest diamond company, sent gem-hunters to the area but they came away empty-handed. It was a vast region to survey, and they’d overlooked something vital. A few years later, a team of Australian geologists with a tiny budget searched for even tinier mineral clues. Those clues led them to the earth’s largest diamond deposit and the world’s richest source of rare pink diamonds. Based on in-depth research and interviews — including with Alan King Jones, Bill Leslie and ‘the father of Australian diamonds’, Ewen Tyler — Argyle: The Impossible Story of Australian Diamonds details the almost overwhelming challenges with realising a diamond mining venture in Australia, shows how these obstacles were overcome, and explores the mine’s impact and legacy.

Book The Psychology of Social Class

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Psychology of Social Class, leading social psychologist Michael Argyle provides a comprehensive account of psychological and other research into social class using data from Britain, the United States and elsewhere. By addressing differences in social class, the book broadens the perspective of social psychological research to examine such topics as the effect of achievement motivation and other personality variables on social mobility and the effect of social class on health. After examining the historical development of class and the attempts to abolish it, Argyle describes the class system currently existing in Britain and compares it with others in the modern world. Included are discussions of psychological models of class, and hierarchies in small groups and social organizations. A detailed account is provided of class differences in behavior and beliefs, covering such aspects as marriage, friendship, speech, style, personality, sexual behavior, crime, religion, and leisure. Finally, Argyle examines the images people have of the class system, the effects of class on well-being, and discusses possible explanations of class differences in terms of genetics, socialization, work experience, differences in lifestyle and the sheer effects of social status.

Download or read book The Argyle of San Antonio written by John C. Kerr and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stately mansion known as the Argyle has a past as storied and fascinating as the Lone Star State itself. From its origins as a home and headquarters of a horse ranch to its transformation into an inn and elegant dining club, and ultimately part of a pathfinding medical research endeavor, the Argyle has been at the center of San Antonio and Texas history since the middle of the nineteenth century. Originally built as a residence in 1860 by Charles Anderson, the Argyle temporarily served as an arsenal for the Confederacy during the Civil War. By the late nineteenth century, siblings Robert and Alice O’Grady operated what became a familiar inn and fine dining establishment for weary travelers and many notable figures, including Gen. John J. “Black Jack” Pershing. During the Great Depression and World War II, the Argyle fell into disrepair. Betty Moorman, whose brother Tom Slick had founded the nonprofit Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, rescued the Argyle from the brink of demolition and converted it into a fine dining club whose members would provide financial support for the research institute. Today the Argyle continues to serve and support the mission of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, making important contributions to understanding and developing treatments for infectious diseases and cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and other common diseases. This book not only contributes to the story of San Antonio’s history but is also a treasured and informative keepsake for those who support and continue to benefit from the Argyle and its larger mission.
