Book Are the Stock Exchanges of Emerging Economies Inter Linked

Download or read book Are the Stock Exchanges of Emerging Economies Inter Linked written by Gagan Deep Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the interlinkages between stock markets of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) with the help of benchmark indices of these stock exchanges. Daily closing levels of the benchmark indices in the five countries were taken for a period from April 1, 2005 to March 31, 2010. Line charts and unit-root tests were applied to check the stationary nature of the series; Regression Analysis, Granger's Causality Model, Vector Auto Regression (VAR) Model, and Variance Decomposition Analysis were performed to find out the linkages between the markets under study. The analysis revealed that the stock markets under study were influenced by each other, but not to a great extent. It implies that there exists opportunities for diversification of the investors among the stock exchanges of BRICS. The paper also observed that there are domestic factors (macro-economic variables) that influence the stock markets.

Book The Dynamics of Emerging Stock Markets

Download or read book The Dynamics of Emerging Stock Markets written by Mohamed El Hedi Arouri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging markets have received a particular attention of academic researchers and practitioners since they decided to open their domestic capital markets to foreign participants about three decades ago. At the same time, we remark that theoretical and empirical research in emerging stock markets has been particularly challenged by their fast changes in nature and size under the effects of financial liberalization and reforms. This evolving feature has particularly led to a commensurate increase in sophistication of modeling techniques used for understanding financial markets. In this spirit, the book aims at providing the audience a comprehensive understanding of emerging stock markets in various aspects using modern financial econometric methods. It addresses the empirical techniques needed by economic agents to analyze the dynamics of these markets and illustrates how they can be applied to the actual data. On the other hand, it presents and discusses new research findings and their implications.

Book Explaining the Migration of Stocks from Exchanges in Emerging Economies to International Centers

Download or read book Explaining the Migration of Stocks from Exchanges in Emerging Economies to International Centers written by Stijn Claessens and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors study the determinants of the growing migration of stock market activity to international financial centers. They use a sample of 77 countries and document that higher economic growth and more macroeconomic stability help stock market development. Countries with higher income per capita, sounder macroeconomic policies, more efficient legal systems, better shareholder protection, and more open financial markets tend to have larger and more liquid stock markets. The authors show that these factors also drive the degree with which capital raising, listing, and trading have been migrating to international financial centers. As fundamentals improve and technology advances, this migration will likely increase and domestic stock market activity may become too little to support local markets. For many emerging economies, the best policy is to establish sound fundamentals but not necessarily the trading, or even listing of securities locally.

Book When Do Emerging Economies Need Domestic Equity Markets

Download or read book When Do Emerging Economies Need Domestic Equity Markets written by Kent W. Hargis and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the conditions under which companies and investors in emerging economies will benefit from the development of domestic stock markets. It is shown how the development of both domestic and foreign stock markets reduces cross-border investment and information barriers, integrating markets, expanding the shareholder base and reducing the cost of capital for domestic companies. With perfect inter-market information transparency, expected trading costs for uninformed investors declines in both the domestic and foreign market, enhancing the ability of domestic investors to hedge liquidity risk. Current proposals for the development of regional stock exchanges in the Nordic countries, Africa and Central America provide benefits over existing domestic markets by expanding the shareholder base and attracting a critical mass of speculators. However, international cross-listings in the major financial centers, such as New York and London, and index funds such as WEBS can be more effective than regional exchanges, closed-end country funds and the liberalization of investment restrictions on domestic markets in reducing the cost of capital for domestic companies and improving market liquidity because of their ability to integrate markets with greater inter-market information transparency.

Book The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made

Download or read book The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made written by Domenic Vitiello and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-04-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made recounts the history of America's first stock exchange and the ways it shaped the growth and decline of the city around it. Founded in 1790, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, its member firms, and the companies they financed had profound impacts on the city's place in the world economy. At its start, the exchange and its members helped spur the development of the early United States, its financial sector, and its westward expansion. During the nineteenth century, they invested in making Philadelphia the center of industrial America, raising capital for the railroads and coal mines that connected cities to one another and built a fossil fuel-based economy. After financing the Civil War, they underwrote the growth of the modern metropolis, its transportation infrastructure, utility systems, and real estate development. At the turn of the twentieth century, stagnation of the exchange contributed to Philadelphia's loss of power in the national and world economy. This original interpretation of the roots of deindustrialization holds important lessons for other cities that have declined. The exchange's revival following World War II is a remarkable story, but it also illustrates the limits of economic development in postindustrial cities. Unlike earlier eras, the exchange's fortunes diverged from those of the city around it. Ultimately, it became part of a larger, global institution when it merged with NASDAQ in 2008. Far more than a history of a single institution, The Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the City It Made traces the evolving relationship between the exchange and the city. For people concerned with cities and their development, this study offers a long-term history of the public-private partnerships and private sector-led urban development popular today. More generally, it traces the networks of firms and institutions revealed by the securities market and its participants. Herein lies a critical and understudied part of the history of metropolitan economic development.

Book Emerging Capital Markets and Globalization

Download or read book Emerging Capital Markets and Globalization written by Augusto de la Torre and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-10-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back in the early 1990s, economists and policy makers had high expectations about the prospects for domestic capital market development in emerging economies, particularly in Latin America. Unfortunately, they are now faced with disheartening results. Stock and bond markets remain illiquid and segmented. Debt is concentrated at the short end of the maturity spectrum and denominated in foreign currency, exposing countries to maturity and currency risk. Capital markets in Latin America look particularly underdeveloped when considering the many efforts undertaken to improve the macroeconomic environment and to reform the institutions believed to foster capital market development. The disappointing performance has made conventional policy recommendations questionable, at best. 'Emerging Capital Markets and Globalization' analyzes where we stand and where we are heading on capital market development. First, it takes stock of the state and evolution of Latin American capital markets and related reforms over time and relative to other countries. Second, it analyzes the factors related to the development of capital markets, with particular interest on measuring the impact of reforms. And third, in light of this analysis, it discusses the prospects for capital market development in Latin America and emerging economies and the implications for the reform agenda.

Book Understanding Financial Interconnectedness

Download or read book Understanding Financial Interconnectedness written by International Monetary Fund. Strategy, Policy, & Review Department and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper seeks to advance our understanding of global financial interconnectedness by (i) mapping aspects of the architecture of global finance and (ii) investigating critical fault lines related to interconnectedness along which systemic risks were built up and shocks transmitted in the crisis. It thus takes initial steps toward operationalizing enhanced financial sector and macro-financial surveillance called for by the IMF’s Executive Board and by experts such as de Larosiere et al. (2009). Getting a better handle on interconnectedness would strengthen the Fund‘s ability, together with the Financial Stability Board, to track systemic risk concentrations. It would also inform spillover and vulnerability analyses, and sharpen bilateral and multilateral surveillance.

Book The Internationalization of Equity Markets

Download or read book The Internationalization of Equity Markets written by Jeffrey A. Frankel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume addresses three important recent trends in the internationalization of United States equity markets: extensive market integration through foreign investment and links among stock prices around the world; increasing securitization as countries such as Japan come to rely more than ever before on markets in equities and bonds at the expense of banks; and the opening of national financial systems of newly industrializing countries to international financial flows and institutions, as governments remove capital controls and other barriers. Eight essays examine such issues as the current extent of international market integration, gains to U.S. investors through international diversification, home-country bias in investing, the role of time and location around the world in stock trading, and the behavior of country funds. Other, long-standing questions about equity markets are also addressed, including market efficiency and the accuracy of models of expected returns, with a particular focus on variances, covariances, and the price of risk according to the Capital Asset Pricing Model.
