Download or read book The Blessings of Business written by Darren E. Grem and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Matthew cautions readers that "Ye cannot serve God and mammon." But for at least a century conservative American Protestants have been trying to prove that adage wrong. In The Blessings of Business, Darren E. Grem argues that while preachers, activists, and politicians have all helped spread the gospel, American evangelicalism owes its enduring strength in a large part to private enterprise. Grem argues for a new history of American evangelicalism, demonstrating how its adherents strategically used corporate America--its leaders, businesses, money, ideas, and values--to advance their religious, cultural, and political movement. Beginning before the First World War, conservative evangelicals were able to use businessmen and business methods to retain and expand their public influence in a secularizing, diversifying, and liberalizing age. In the process they became beholden to pro-business stances on matters of theology, race, gender, taxation, trade, and the state, transforming evangelicalism itself into as much of an economic movement as a religious one. The Blessings of Business tells the story of unlikely partnerships between well-known champions of the evangelical movement such as Billy Graham and largely forgotten businessmen like Herbert Taylor, J. Howard Pew, and R.G. LeTourneau. Grem also shows how evangelicals set up their own pro-business organizations and linked the quarterly and yearly growth of "Christian" businesses to their social, religious, and political aspirations. Fascinating and provocative, The Blessings of Business uncovers the strong ties that conservative Christians have forged between the Almighty and the almighty dollar.

Book Blessed Are Those Who Ask the Questions

Download or read book Blessed Are Those Who Ask the Questions written by J. Goosby Smith and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s organizational environment is characterized by high levels of cross-cultural, cross-national, and cross-religious communication, conflict, collaboration, and commerce. This environment produces myriad encounters between individuals who embrace different ideologies, religions and spiritual practices. As such, unanswered (and even unasked) questions about management, spirituality, and religion abound. This book, seeks to advance our understanding by asking the big questions. Blessed are Those Who Ask the Questions: What Should We be Asking About Management, Spirituality, and Religion in Organizations? is intended to be provocative in nature. Its chapters address novel ways that leadership, organizations, and organizational stakeholders mutually impact each other by their similarities and differences in religious, spiritual, and ideological traditions, cultures, and practices. Interdisciplinary in nature and firmly grounded in scholarly literature, this book identifies and maps out bold new trajectories for advancing the study of management spirituality, and religion (including but going far beyond Western, Christian conceptualizations of religion). Sometimes universal, sometimes quite specific, this volume identifies unexplored, underexplored, or unresolved issues in the field and proposes new streams of research. Diverse conceptual, empirical, theoretical, and critical treatments that honor a variety of inquiry styles and research methods push the boundaries of MSR research.

Book Three Times Blessed

Download or read book Three Times Blessed written by Dieter Dubberke and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-24 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few of us, as we live our daily lives, think of eventually writing a memoir, believing probably that what we are doing, or how we are living, is not worth recording for posterity or for those around us. So it was with Dieter Dubberke, who scoffed at the idea when it was first presented to him by his wife and one or two others. Only reluctantly did he begin the project, and even then it was with the intention that it would be only for his children and their families, and maybe--just maybe--for a very few others. However as his focus sharpened, and as he remembered an increasing number of details, he began to see a greater value in recounting his life--how he had conducted himself and what he had learned, and how he came to honor and to embrace certain principles which might be worth passing on to others who could benefit from what he had seen and experienced and done. As a little boy, he and his mother dodged bullets while escaping from the easternmost part of Germany just ahead of the advancing Russians in the closing days of World War II. With his mother and brother he finally made it to the West, before the Iron Curtain would have trapped them permanently behind its impenetrable barrier. Even so, life wasn't easy there after the war, and survival was a matter of day-to-day, hand-to-mouth existence. Food was scarce, and fuel for heat during the bitter winters was something which had to be scrambled for, a few stray lumps of coal dropped in the road and fished from icy potholes with frozen hands. The lessons learned in how to survive were hard ones, the kind which were burned indelibly into him but which served him well in later years. He was blessed just to survive the war and its aftermath. However he received another stroke of that same good fortune which had followed him when he had a chance at age thirteen to come to America, where he was adopted by his maternal uncle, who had emigrated to the US years before. A whole new life opened up for him, and from the beginning he was determined to appreciate it and make the best of it. Education in an American high school and service in the US Army thoroughly Americanized him and gave him a deep and abiding love for this country and for the opportunities it offers to those who recognize them and seize them. Seize them he did. The same work ethic which helped him survive the rigors of post-war Germany was now put to use in establishing a family and building a career. He learned the retail food industry in the Safeway organization. His love of the outdoors and a rural way of life led him to the small and artsy town of Ojai, California, where he became a store manager, catering to the tastes of the creative avant-garde while never neglecting the needs of the everyday ordinary shopper. However it was when he ventured out on his own, in Mariposa, California, that he found the chance to become completely his own man and to develop to the fullest his true entrepreneurial talents and abilities. Starting with one small store, he opened a major supermarket which utilized the newest in marketing techniques and provided to the small community a much wider range of choice than it had previously known. Then came another business, and another. However simply to make this a tale of some inevitable expansion would be all too familiar and mundane. This kind of growth has remained but a part of the story of his success, one which can only be told and fully appreciated in light of his accomplishment as a person. Everything he learned in those early days of hardship and deprivation somehow gradually came together over the years to elevate both his mind and his spirit, to produce in him a broader and higher way of thinking, and a more expansive outlook. He quickly but quietly became a respected leader within his community. Clear thinking, dispassionate reasoning and the ability to rise above personal feelings all combined to make him the kind of person whom people sought

Book Executive Compensation as an Agency Problem

Download or read book Executive Compensation as an Agency Problem written by Lucian A. Bebchuk and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an overview of the main theoretical elements and empirical underpinnings of a managerial power' approach to executive compensation. Under this approach, the design of executive compensation is viewed not only as an instrument for addressing the agency problem between managers and shareholders but also as part of the agency problem itself. Boards of publicly traded companies with dispersed ownership, we argue, cannot be expected to bargain at arm's length with managers. As a result, managers wield substantial influence over their own pay arrangements, and they have an interest in reducing the saliency of the amount of their pay and the extent to which that pay is de-coupled from managers' performance. We show that the managerial power approach can explain many features of the executive compensation landscape, including ones that many researchers have long viewed as puzzling. Among other things, we discuss option plan design, stealth compensation, executive loans, payments to departing executives, retirement benefits, the use of compensation consultants, and the observed relationship between CEO power and pay. We also explain how managerial influence might lead to substantially inefficient arrangements that produce weak or even perverse incentives.

Book Selling Hope Selling Risk

Download or read book Selling Hope Selling Risk written by Donald C. Langevoort and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of globalization, technological change, and economic anxiety, we have deep doubts about how well the task of investor protection is being performed. In the U.S., the focus is on the Securities & Exchange Commission. Part of the explanation is economic and political: the failure to know the right balance between investor protection and capital formation, and the resulting battle among interest groups over their preferred solutions. In Selling Hope, Selling Risk, author Donald C. Langevoort argues that regulation is also frustrated at nearly every turn by human nature, as exhibited both on the buy-side (investors) and sell-side (corporate executives, bankers, stockbrokers). There is plenty of savvy and guile, but also ample hope, fear, ego, overconfidence, social contagion and the like that persistently filter and distort the messages regulators try to send. This book is the first sustained effort to link the key initiatives of securities regulation with our burgeoning awareness in the social sciences of how people and organizations really behave in economic settings. It examines why corporate fraud occurs and how best to deter it and compensate its victims; the search for an edge via insider trading; the disclosure apparatus and its gatekeepers; sales efforts and manipulation in Ponzi schemes, internet scams, private offerings and crowdfunding; and how this all helps explain the recent global financial crisis. It ends by turning these insights back on the task of regulation itself, and the strategies (and frustrations) of making regulation work in a financial world that is at once increasingly sophisticated yet deeply human and incurably flawed.

Book International Handbook of Educational Policy

Download or read book International Handbook of Educational Policy written by Nina Bascia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-14 with total page 1129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nina Bascia, Alister Cumming, Amanda Datnow, Kenneth Leithwood and David Livingstone This Handbook presents contemporary and emergent trends in educational policy research, in over ?fty chapters written by nearly ninety leading researchers from a number of countries. It is organized into ?ve broad sections which capture many of the current dominant educational policy foci and at the same time situate current understandings historically, in terms of both how they are conceptualized and in terms of past policy practice. The chapters themselves are empirically grounded, providing illustrations of the conceptual implications c- tained within them as well as allowing for comparisons across them. The se- re?exivity within chapters with respect to jurisdictional particularities and c- trasts allows readers to consider not only a range of approaches to policy analysis but also the ways in which policies and policy ideas play out in di?erent times and places. The sections move from a focus on prevailing policy tendencies through increasingly critical and ‘‘outsider’’ perspectives on policy. They address, in turn, the contemporary strategic emphasis on large-scale reform; substantive emphases at several levels – on leadership and governance, improving teacher quality and conceptualizing learning in various domains around the notion of literacies and concluding, ?nally, with a contrasting topic, workplace learning, which has had less policy attention and thus allows readers to consider both the advantages and disadvantages of learning and teaching under the bright gaze of policy.
