Book The Determination of a Lifespan

Download or read book The Determination of a Lifespan written by Yasumi Ohshima and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average human lifespan was around 35 years in 1950 and is now 72 years, but is still much less than the longest record of 122 years. Likewise, the present human lifespan differs as much as 30 years across the world. These differences are due to many factors such as meals, obesity, and diseases. This book clarifies these factors and suggests means for the general population to live longer. Related to this, it also reports the status of centenarians in the world and animal experiments. It provides a survey of lifespan records of animals and plants and related factors, especially genes. The results indicate that there are both plants and animals living for 10, 000 years or longer, which will be interesting to researchers and students.

Book Pacific Atlantic Mollusc Migration

Download or read book Pacific Atlantic Mollusc Migration written by Jón Eiríksson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sheds new light on the marine fauna and geological setting of the Tjörnes Sequence, North Iceland, which is a classic site for the Pliocene and Pleistocene stratigraphy of the North Atlantic region. Readers will discover descriptions of new data collected by the editors over a period of over three decades on marine faunal assemblages and sedimentology available for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, as well as the tectonic and stratigraphical relationships on Tjörnes Peninsula. The book includes a comprehensive account of all the collections of marine fossil invertebrate macrofossils and foraminifera known to the editors from the Tjörnes Sequence. It is expected to elucidate sedimentological and faunal changes from relatively stable Pliocene conditions to highly variable and periodically harsh climatic conditions of recurring Quaternary glaciations. The distribution, recent or fossil, of various species is recorded and pertinent ecological and biological features are also discussed. The Tjörnes Sequence records the Neogene migration of Pacific species into the North Atlantic. Researchers in geology, climate science, environmental science and earth science will find this book particularly valuable.

Book Earth System Science Bridging the Gaps between Disciplines

Download or read book Earth System Science Bridging the Gaps between Disciplines written by Gerrit Lohmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth system science is traditionally split into various disciplines (Geology, Physics, Meteorology, Oceanography, Biology etc.) and several sub-disciplines. Overall, the diversity of expertise provides a solid base for interdisciplinary research. However, gaining holistic insights into the Earth system requires the integration of observations, paleoclimate data, analysis tools and modeling. These different approaches of Earth system science are rooted in various disciplines that cut across a broad range of timescales. It is, therefore, necessary to link these disciplines at a relatively early stage in PhD programs. The linking of ‘data and modeling’, as it is the special emphasis in our graduate school, enables graduate students from a variety of disciplines to cooperate and exchange views on the common theme of Earth system science, which leads to a better understanding of processes within a global context.

Book Goods and Services of Marine Bivalves

Download or read book Goods and Services of Marine Bivalves written by Aad C. Smaal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this open access book is to review and analyse the goods and services of bivalve shellfish. How they are defined, what determines the ecological functions that are the basis for the goods and services, what controversies in the use of goods and services exist, and what is needed for sustainable exploitation of bivalves from the perspective of the various stakeholders. The book is focused on the goods and services, and not on impacts of shellfish aquaculture on the benthic environment, or on threats like biotoxins; neither is it a shellfish culture handbook although it can be used in evaluating shellfish culture. The reviews and analysis are based on case studies that exemplify the concept, and show the strengths and weaknesses of the current applications. The multi-authored reviews cover ecological, economic and social aspects of bivalve goods and services. The book provides new insights for scientists, students, shellfish producers, policy advisors, nature conservationists and decision makers. This book is open access under the CC BY license.

Book Towards an Interdisciplinary Approach in Earth System Science

Download or read book Towards an Interdisciplinary Approach in Earth System Science written by Gerrit Lohmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the latest advances at the Helmholtz “Earth System Science Research School” where scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, the University of Bremen, and the Jacobs University are involved in research. One of the greatest challenges is understanding ongoing environmental changes. The longer the time scale the more components of the Earth system are involved, e.g. interannual and decadal variations are related to the coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea ice system, whereas longer variations like glacial-interglacial or Cenozoic transitions involve the carbon cycle, ice sheets and gateways. In order to get deep insights into Earth system science, observations, remote sensing, past environmental data, as well as modeling need to be integrated. These different approaches are traditionally taught in separated disciplines at bachelor and master levels. It is, therefore, necessary to bring these disciplines together in PhD programs.

Book Biostratigraphy Age and Paleoenvironment of the Pliocene Beaufort Formation on Meighen Island Canadian Arctic Archipelago

Download or read book Biostratigraphy Age and Paleoenvironment of the Pliocene Beaufort Formation on Meighen Island Canadian Arctic Archipelago written by R.W. Barendregt and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Meighen Island is a keystone site in the Neogene Canadian High Arctic, unique in the Beaufort Formation for its interbedded marine tongue. This volume is a comprehensive report on the biostratigraphy, age, and correlation of Meighen Island to other important Arctic localities from the standpoint of deposits exposed in the area of Bjaere Bay on the west side of the Island. The authors consider the diverse fossil macrofloras and pollen, the terrestrial and marine faunas, magnetostratigraphy, and amino acid racemization and put this site in the context of major changes in climate and geography during the Pliocene"--
