Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the computer, and of the industry it spawned, is the latest entrant into the field of historical studies. Scholars beginning to turn their attention to the subject of computing need James Cortada's Archives of Data Procesing History as a brief introduction to sources immediately available for investigation. Each essay provides an overview of a major government, academic, or industrial archival collection dealing with the history of computing, the industry, and its leaders and is written by the archivist/historian who has worked with or is responsible for the collection. The archives give practical information on hours, organization, contacts, telephone numbers, survey of contents, and assessments of the historical significance of the collections and their institutions. Reference and business librarians will definitely want to add this volume to their collections. Those interested in the history of technology, the business history of the industry, and the history of major institutions will want to consult it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processing the Past explores the dramatic changes taking place in historical understanding and archival management, and hence the relations between historians and archivists. Written by an archivist and a historian, it shows how these changes have been brought on by new historical thinking, new conceptions of archives, changing notions of historical authority, modifications in archival practices, and new information technologies. The book takes an "archival turn" by situating archives as subjects rather than places of study, and examining the increasingly problematic relationships between historical and archival work. By showing how nineteenth- and early twentieth-century historians and archivists in Europe and North America came to occupy the same conceptual and methodological space, the book sets the background to these changes. In the past, authoritative history was based on authoritative archives and mutual understandings of scientific research. These connections changed as historians began to ask questions not easily answered by traditional documentation, and archivists began to confront an unmanageable increase in the amount of material they processed and the challenges of new electronic technologies. The authors contend that historians and archivists have divided into two entirely separate professions with distinct conceptual frameworks, training, and purposes, as well as different understandings of the authorities that govern their work. Processing the Past moves toward bridging this divide by speaking in one voice to these very different audiences. Blouin and Rosenberg conclude by raising the worrisome question of what future historical archives might be like if historical scholars and archivists no longer understand each other, and indeed, whether their now different notions of what is archival and historical will ever again be joined.

Book Archival Information

Download or read book Archival Information written by Steven Fisher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From original manuscripts and letters to sound recordings and birth certificates, archival information plays an increasingly important role in modern research. Libraries and the Internet have made finding information on a wide range of topics faster and easier, but not all information—particularly from primary sources—is available via local library branches or online resources. Using archival information presents its own challenges. Materials are often located in many different places: public or academic libraries, government agencies, historical societies, or museums. They are usually kept in secured areas where the public is restricted from browsing. This definitive guide shows novice and experienced researchers how to find archival information. It provides tips on how to use archival materials effectively and efficiently. Topics covered include government archives, science and technology collections, military archives, genealogical records, business and corporate archives, performing arts archives, and sports collections. Also provided is an overview of the world of archives, including archival terminology, how to contact archives, and archival etiquette. Whether searching for a noted author's original manuscripts, trying to locate presidential papers, or tracking down a repository of oral histories, Archival Information is an indispensable reference.

Book A Bibliographic Guide to the History of Computing Computers and the Information Processing Industry

Download or read book A Bibliographic Guide to the History of Computing Computers and the Information Processing Industry written by and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1990-05-21 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As millions of people have been exposed to computing through the tremendous growth of microcomputers, there has developed an increasing appreciation of the history of data processing, which dates back many decades before the arrival of the computer. Stretching back to at least the 1860s, such early technologies as adding machines, punch cards, and the office appliance industry are now being recognized for their place in the history of the information processing industry. This work brings together a comprehensive list of sources that offer a general introduction to the literature of the industry. Divided into nine chapters covering topics and historical periods, the bibliography provides an annotated list of published materials describing both the history of the industry and significant items of general interest. Each chapter is introduced with a short review of historically important issues and comments on the literature, and contains contemporary publications as well as more recent material. To give the work a continuing usefulness, ongoing publications, such as computer magazines, are highlighted. Entries are grouped under nearly 100 subheadings, covering such material as contemporary descriptions of hardware and software of the past, seminal technical papers, industry surveys, programming languages, significant individuals and companies, and the role of Japan and microcomputing. All citations are annotated with a brief summary of either the work's contents or its historical importance, while two indexes provide both subject references and author citations. This bibliography will be an important reference source for courses in the history of data processing and business history, and a useful addition to public, college, and university libraries.
