Book excerpt: The highly successful Architecture in the Netherlands once again presents a selection of the past year's most remarkable architecture in the Netherlands. The book highlights 30 projects which were realized in 2003, illustrated with photos and plans. The selected projects include work by 2012 Architecten, de Architecten Cie., AAS Architecten, Wiel Arets, Borren Staalenhoef, CePeZed, Claus en Kaan, Karelse van der Meer, KCAP, MVRDV, Neutelings Riedijk, NL Architects, OMA, Onix, Christian Rapp, Soeters Van Eldonk Ponec, Joost Swarte/Mecanoo Architects and René van Zuuk. The yearbook includes four essays by the editors and a roundup of the most important prizes, competitions, exhibitions and publications over the past year. What struck the editors most this year was the evidently renewed interest in the reality of the here and now and the fact that architects are once again drawing inspiration from this reality. Still the question remains whether the future is adequately served by reality or whether we should perhaps also dare to dream of utopia.

Book Netherlands Yearbook of International Law 2016

Download or read book Netherlands Yearbook of International Law 2016 written by Martin Kuijer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International law holds a paradoxical position with territory. Most rules of international law are traditionally based on the notion of State territory, and territoriality still significantly shapes our contemporary legal system. At the same time, new developments have challenged territory as the main organising principle in international relations. Three trends in particular have affected the role of territoriality in international law: the move towards functional regimes, the rise of cosmopolitan projects claiming to transgress state boundaries, and the development of technologies resulting in the need to address intangible, non-territorial, phenomena. Yet, notwithstanding some profound changes, it remains impossible to think of international law without a territorial locus. If international law is undergoing changes, this implies a reconfiguration of territory, but not a move beyond it. The Netherlands Yearbook of International Law was first published in 1970. It offers a forum for the publication of scholarly articles of a conceptual nature in a varying thematic area of public international law.

Book The Architecture of Fundamental Rights in the European Union

Download or read book The Architecture of Fundamental Rights in the European Union written by Šejla Imamovic and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the new architecture for the protection of fundamental rights in Europe after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. As a starting point, it identifies how the EU has gained a prominent role in promoting and protecting fundamental rights at European level despite the absence of an unlimited mandate to address fundamental rights violations. This new setting affects the traditional relationship between the EU, the ECHR system and the Member States and, in the absence of EU accession to the ECHR, enhances the risk of tensions and conflicts between the case law of the two European Courts. Examples of these tensions and conflicts are explored in the Area of Freedom Security and Justice, which is one of the most fundamental rights-sensitive areas of EU law and one of the busiest areas of activity for the CJEU. The book offers new insights into existing rules on the resolution of conflicts between EU and ECHR law before mapping out techniques actually used by domestic courts to avoid or address such conflicts.
