Book excerpt: Using probabilistic automata (PA) within the Ramadge and Wonham (RW) framework, the model of discrete-event systems (DES) is extended to include probabilistic information. The extended model can provide useful numerical results for performance analysis of DES by exploiting Markov Chain properties, as well as allowing the use of logical synthesis techniques. Using the extended model, performance evaluation and pros and cons analysis of centralized and decentralized architectures are provided for two typical DES, Small Factory and Transfer Line. Given estimated cost and profit data, the centralized and decentralized architectures are evaluated in these two examples, and various summary rules as to which architecture to implement are obtained. For the Transfer Line example, â material feedbackâ in the loop and only partial knowledge of the global system state in the decentralized architecture can result in blocking. Blocking removal strategies are introduced and compared.

Book excerpt: This book shows how supervisory control theory (SCT) supports the formulation of various control problems of standard types, like the synthesis of controlled dynamic invariants by state feedback, and the resolution of such problems in terms of naturally definable control-theoretic concepts and properties, like reachability, controllability and observability. It exploits a simple, abstract model of controlled discrete-event systems (DES) that has proved to be tractable, appealing to control specialists, and expressive of a range of control-theoretic ideas. It allows readers to choose between automaton-based and dually language-based forms of SCT, depending on whether their preference is for an internal-structural or external-behavioral description of the problem. The monograph begins with two chapters on algebraic and linguistic preliminaries and the fundamental concepts and results of SCT are introduced. To handle complexity caused by system scale, architectural approaches—the horizontal modularity of decentralized and distributed supervision and the vertical modularity of hierarchical supervision—are introduced. Supervisory control under partial observation and state-based supervisory control are also addressed; in the latter, a vector DES model that exploits internal regularity of algebraic structure is proposed. Finally SCT is generalized to deal with timed DES by incorporating temporal features in addition to logical ones. Researchers and graduate students working with the control of discrete-event systems or who are interested in the development of supervisory control methods will find this book an invaluable aid in their studies. The text will also be of assistance to researchers in manufacturing, logistics, communications and transportation, areas which provide plentiful examples of the class of systems being discussed.

Book excerpt: In response to the exponential computational complexity of supervisor design for discrete- event systems and the trend towards distributed control in applications, this dissertation extends current results towards a unified comprehensive theory of control architecture, enabling the design of decentralized controls with feasible computational effort. Major contributions include: (1) identification of universal primitive components, such as 'servers' and 'buffers' in a manufacturing (or similar) system, whose control actions are determined locally and which make up systems more amenable to nonblocking verification than general structures; (2) creation of a new modeling tool, control-flow net, that can exhibit the interconnection among plant components and specification via a graph, so that a system can be simplified and decomposed according to the net structure; (3) specification of the causal relation between system blocking and special net structure in the control-flow net, which enables the qualitative derivation of control logic independent of system numerical parameters; (4) a flexible decentralized and hierarchical supervisory control architecture based on control-flow net to reduce computational effort; and (5) application and extension of the 'observer' concept to constructing abstractions used in hierarchical control, so that the nonblocking property is strictly preserved. In the context of supervisory control theory, this dissertation has mathematically validated these 'common-sense' principles and confirmed their effectiveness through several examples.

Discrete event systems are systems with non-numerically-valued states, inputs, and outputs. The approaches to the modelling and control of these systems can be roughly divided into two groups. Book excerpt: Discrete event systems (DESs) are event-driven systems, which change their discrete states upon asynchronous occurrence of certain events. This dissertation addresses decentralized/distributed failure diagnosis and supervisory control of DESs. In a decentralized diagnosis architecture, a local diagnoser performs failure diagnosis completely based on its own observations without communicating with others. A notion of codi-agnosability is introduced to capture the property that a system should satisfy such that its failure behaviors are diagnosable by one of the local diagnosers within a bounded delay of their occurrences. Algorithms with polynomial complexity in the size of system/specification models are presented for verifying codiagnosability, computing diagnosis delay bound, synthesizing local diagnosers, and online diagnosis using them. Further diagnosis properties are investigated through the introduction of strong-(co)diagnosability and safe-codiagnosability. In a distributed diagnosis architecture, local diagnosers exchange their individual observation with each other to perform failure diagnosis collaboratively. Finite automata models are constructed to capture communication delays, and the system/specification/sensing models are augmented with respect to the communication delay models. Via those augmented models, a distributed diagnosis problem is converted to a decentralized diagnosis problem. This allows distributed diagnosis analysis to be performed in same as decentralized diagnosis analysis. Also, in the unbounded delay case decidability of the problem is established. For supervisory control of DESs, prioritized synchronous composition (PSC) based decentralized control and nondeterministic decentralized control are introduced. A PSC based decision fusion rule is more general than the conventional conjunctive/disjunctive decision fusion rule since it has control-authority besides control-capability. Algorithms are presented for existence and synthesis of PSC based supervisors. Computational complexity of the former is polynomial in the size of both system and specification models, while complexity of the latter is polynomial in the size of systems model, and exponential in the size of specification model. By using nondeterministic supervisors, a weaker condition than the condition of controllability together with co-observability is obtained for decentralized control. Algorithms of polynomial complexity are presented for both existence and synthesis of nondeterministic supervisors in target control and range control problems.

Book excerpt: Supervisory Control Theory (SCT) provides a tool to model and control human-engineered complex systems, such as computer networks, World Wide Web, identification and spread of malicious executables, and command, control, communication, and information systems. Although there are some excellent monographs and books on SCT to control and diagnose discrete-event systems, there is a need for a research monograph that provides a coherent quantitative treatment of SCT theory for decision and control of complex systems. This new monograph will assimilate many new concepts that have been recently reported or are in the process of being reported in open literature. The major objectives here are to present a) a quantitative approach, supported by a formal theory, for discrete-event decision and control of human-engineered complex systems; and b) a set of applications to emerging technological areas such as control of software systems, malicious executables, and complex engineering systems. The monograph will provide the necessary background materials in automata theory and languages for supervisory control. It will introduce a new paradigm of language measure to quantitatively compare the performance of different automata models of a physical system. A novel feature of this approach is to generate discrete-event robust optimal decision and control algorithms for both military and commercial systems.
