Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universal Design in Higher Education looks at the design of physical and technological environments at institutions of higher education; at issues pertaining to curriculum and instruction; and at the full array of student services. Universal Design in Higher Education is a comprehensive guide for researchers and practitioners on creating fully accessible college and university programs. It is founded upon, and contributes to, theories of universal design in education that have been gaining increasingly wide attention in recent years. As greater numbers of students with disabilities attend postsecondary educational institutions, administrators have expressed increased interest in making their programs accessible to all students. This book provides both theoretical and practical guidance for schools as they work to turn this admirable goal into a reality. It addresses a comprehensive range of topics on universal design for higher education institutions, thus making a crucial contribution to the growing body of literature on special education and universal design. This book will be of unique value to university and college administrators, and to special education researchers, practitioners, and activists.

Book Barriers to Education

Download or read book Barriers to Education written by Daniel Berg and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project pertains to the accessibility of the approaches and entrances to campus facilities germane to the discrimination policy of the Northeastern State University of Oklahoma. University campuses have played a significant role in the establishment of improved standards of accessibility for people with disabilities. A literature review briefly tracing the development of the standards and regulations related to the human rights issue of disability discrimination will prove instrumental in providing the appropriate paradigm for architectural barrier analysis. Two very specific goals are associated with surveying the history of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the history of the NSU Broken Arrow campus, and the status of architectural barriers explored in this study. One is to gain a perspective about the difficulty people encounter in applying the standards through an accurate understanding of the regulations. The other is to reveal the congruity between the regulations and campus architecture, showing thereby the obstacles to accessibility, or non-discrimination. A life insurance statistic shows that approximately 49 Americans become disabled every minute. Another quotes the statistic that one third of the those with disabilities are 65 or older. The economic blow of a disability can be devastating. The removal of architectural barriers has a very real and significant impact on American life. This study found some minor architectural barriers and regulatory infractions which need to be addressed. It also found some reassurance that accessibility can be managed well. The survey validates the concept that awareness and understanding are prerequisites to improvement. Finally, this study is intended to improve the cognizance of the barriers to accessing campus facilities so they may be removed.
