Book The Early Public Garages of San Francisco

Download or read book The Early Public Garages of San Francisco written by Mark D. Kessler and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the quarter century from San Francisco's devasting fire of 1906 to the beginning of the Great Depression, as automobiles exploded in popularity, new buildings had to be conceived and constructed to provide parking space and repair facilities. This book studies a number of the resulting public garages that featured facade designs based on historical architectural styles. Considering the garages' function, the facades exhibit a surprising grace and nobility. Through an analysis complemented by photographs (including sixty by noted architectural photographer Sharon Risedorph) and drawings, the author dissects the architectural and cultural factors that lie at the heart of this unexpected merit. Addressing the discrepancy between the buildings' beauty and the assumption that old garages are unsightly and disposable, the book examines them as cultural artifacts of the dawn of the Motor Age. The garage is presented as a new form of transportation depot, employing architectural symbolism to celebrate the ascendancy of the automobile over the train. Today, the surviving buildings are vulnerable to real estate development, in part because their quality is misunderstood. The book--a fresh perspective on the value of older utilitarian buildings--concludes with a call to preserve these structures and adapt them to compatible new uses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated book traces the life and work of Hart Wood (1880–1957), from his beginnings in architectural offices in Denver and San Francisco to his arrival in Hawaii in 1919 as a partner of C. W. Dickey and eventual solo career in the Islands. An outspoken leader in the development of a Hawaiian style of architecture, Wood incorporated local building traditions and materials in many of his projects and was the first in Hawaii to blend Eastern and Western architectural forms in a conscious manner. Enchanted by Hawaii’s vivid beauty and its benevolent climate, exotic flora, and cosmopolitan culture, Wood sought to capture the aura of the Islands in his architectural designs. Hart Wood’s magnificent and graceful buildings remain critical to Hawaii’s architectural legacy more than fifty years after his death: the First Church of Christ Scientist on Punahou Street, the First Chinese Church on King Street, the S & G Gump Building on Kalakaua Avenue, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply Administration Building on Beretania Street, and the Alexander & Baldwin Building on Bishop Street, as well as numerous Wood residences throughout the city.

Book The Architect and Engineer of California Vol 43

Download or read book The Architect and Engineer of California Vol 43 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Architect and Engineer of California, Vol. 43: October to December, 1915 Since the advent of the present administration architectural publications and periodicals of general circulation have devoted considerable space to discussions for improvement in this work, and the present policy is the outcome of heated debates by extremists on both sides. Some economists 'have advocated abandoning the creditable standards which have prevailed for the past fifteen years, seeking to have federal buildings designed like warehouses or factories, obsessed with the practical, and losing sight entirely of the architectural and esthetic values. On the other hand over-zealous partisans have gone to the other extreme, where common sense and sound business judgment would dictate otherwise. There is a happy medium between these two extremes, and it is apparent the Secretary aims to provide new buildings, not only practical and suitable for the needs of the community in which they are to be placed, but also as beautiful as can be designed with the means available; buildings which will educate and develop the public taste and eventually elevate it to a higher plane. The new order seeks to establish a national system of uniformity and busi ness economy in the construction of Government buildings and to get away from the old hit and miss system which has cost the people many millions of dollars.
