Book Architecture of the Home

Download or read book Architecture of the Home written by Ola Nylander and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-10-11 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regardless of individual taste, some homes are indisputably more charged, have more atmosphere and are more welcoming than others. But what is it that gives them these qualities - and what steps can those involved in housing design and construction take to ensure that they are creating a positive environment for residents? The Architecture of the Home presents an analysis of non-measurable architectonic attributes that are indispensable to the quality of the home and are particularly important to the resident's perception of their dwelling. The attractive home, in which functional and practical aspects interact with aesthetic and sensual ones, is described in terms of seven fields of attributes: materials and detailing, axiality, enclosure, movement, spatial figures, daylight and organisation of spaces. Ola Nylander presents his detailed research in an engaging and accessible manner, and supports his argument through case studies of four apartment complexes, including interviews with residents and architects. The lessons learnt from this carefully chosen selection can be applied throughout the world in any field of housing, from the most affordable to the most luxurious. Far too many people are still condemned to live in homes that are unattractive and inhospitable, which can have a profound effect on their sense of wellbeing and self-worth. This book offers a straightforward approach to housing design which could make such negative environments a thing of the past. The Architecture of the Home equips architects, students of architecture, housing contractors, building consultants, housing companies, landlords and all other people interested in housing issues with the tools they need to make a healthy contribution to our living environment.

Download or read book Tremaine Houses written by Volker M. Welter and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the extraordinary patronage of modern architecture that the Tremaine family sustained for nearly four decades in the mid-twentieth century. From the late 1930s to the early 1970s, two brothers, Burton G. Tremaine and Warren D. Tremaine, and their respective wives, Emily Hall Tremaine and Katharine Williams Tremaine, commissioned approximately thirty architecture and design projects. Richard Neutra and Oscar Niemeyer designed the best-known Tremaine houses; Philip Johnson and Frank Lloyd Wright also created designs and buildings for the family that achieved iconic status in the modern movement. Focusing on the Tremaines’ houses and other projects, such as a visitor center at the meteor crater in Arizona, this volume explores the Tremaines’ architectural patronage in terms of the family’s motivations and values, exposing patterns in what may appear as an eclectic collection of modern architecture. Architectural historian Volker M. Welter argues that the Tremaines’ patronage was not driven by any single factor; rather, it stemmed from a network of motives comprising the clients’ practical requirements, their private and public lives, and their ideas about architecture and art.
