Book excerpt: The primary purpose of archeological testing was to evaluate the site in Eggerts Landing campground because of Corps of Engineer plans to modify the spillway and relocate the main public recreational area. The site is identified as late Plains Woodland. Further archaeological work is not recommended as the site does not appear eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Sites. Higher density deposits were likely concentrated west of the present campground in an area now inundated by Lake Ashtabula. In addition, the site did not produce, and is not likely to contain, information which can be considered important from a regional archeological perspective.

Book excerpt: The field investigation was undertaken in accordance with the Corps of Engineers obligations to inventory and assess all cultural resources within its jurisdiction. The Phase II intensive test excavations were initiated for the purposes of: delineating the spatial distribution, horizontal and vertical, of each site; determining the respective integrity of these loci; and, where possible, the establishment of the general cultural affiliation and probable function of each cultural resource based upon the analyses of recovered data. Site 32BA415 has a Plains Woodland cultural affiliation, although this locus contains a low density of cultural materials. 23A428 contains materials of Late Plains Archaic cultural ascription. This locus has been virtually destroyed through cultivation and related agricultural activity. None of the cultural resources examined fulfill the necessary eligibility criteria for nomination for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Consequently, sites 32BA415, 32BA428, and 32GG5 are not recommended for migration. Keywords: American Indians, Sites, Sampling.
