Book Assessing Site Significance

Download or read book Assessing Site Significance written by Donald L. Hardesty and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing Site Significance is an invaluable resource for archaeologists and others who need guidance in determining whether sites are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Because the register's eligibility criteria were largely developed for standing sites, it is difficult to know in any particular case whether a site known primarily through archaeological work has sufficient 'historical significance' to be listed. Hardesty and Little address these challenges, describing how to file for NRHP eligibility and how to determine the historical significance of archaeological properties. This second edition brings everything up to date, and includes new material on 17th- and 18th-century sites, traditional cultural properties, shipwrecks, Japanese internment camps, and military properties.

This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phase I Archeological Research Program for the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, Vol. 1: Objectives, Methods, and Summaries of Baseline Studies Archeological interest in the Knife River Indian Villages dates back more than a century. Shortly after establishment of the town of Stanton, North Dakota, an archeologist from Minneapolis, Theodore Lewis, visited the villages clustered about the mouth of the Knife River and drew sketch maps of them (wood l986az49) Prior to World War I, the State Historical Society of North Dakota employed a local surveyor to make detailed maps of the same villages, and in the 19203 the Society entertained the idea of acquiring the sites to set them aside as archeological preserves. Unfortunately, the Society was not able to accomplish this. Today we owe a great debt to the foresight of local landowners who have conscientiously preserved these archeological sites over the years, making it possible for ourselves and future generations to appreciate them as an historical and scientific resource. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phase I Archeological Research Program for the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, Vol. 3: Analysis of the Physical Remains Following the pattern of most Middle Missouri subarea studies, emphasis is placed on analysis of the rim portion of ceramic vessels, with lesser attention paid to vessel body parts and body sherd analysis. This is because the majority of vessel decoration occurs on the rim area and because major changes in vessel form are also best seen in this part of the vessel. Thus, study of stylistic and possibly of technological and functional characteristics can best be done using data derived from the vessel rim and orifice area.
