This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archeological and Historical Investigations in Samana Dominican Republic The northeastern portion of the Dominican Republic, comprising the peninsula and bay of Samana, with its many islets, has long been known as a region rich in deposits left by its pre-Columbian inhabitants. On the south shore of Samana Bay, which deeply indents this coast of the island, William M. Gabb explored some caves in 1869-1871 and found them to contain very extensive kitchen middens. Pottery and bones collected by him have been in the National Museum since 1872. Among these bones were found, early in 1916, by Gerrit S. Miller, Jr., of the National Museum, some jaws of a rodent supposed at that time to be extinct. Stimulated by this discovery, Dr. William L. Abbott visited the caves later in the same year. He obtained material of great interest and reported that large accumulations of shells, bones, and pottery remained to be examined. Doctor Abbott's earliest expedition to Santo Domingo was in 1883 and repeated visits were made by him since that time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand Narratives of colonization, especially ones related to the Spanish and Portuguese Americas, began circulating soon after 1492. The danger of these Grand Narratives is that they are often mistaken as reality and eclipse all other possible narrations pertaining to a particular place and/or time. As more Caribbean territories become independent, the questioning of Grand Narratives has permeated many disciplines in the region, and archaeology is no exception. This work attempts to examine the lifeways at the archaeological site of Concepción de la Vega during its occupation from 1494 through 1564, using a Decolonial approach. Situated in present-day Dominican Republic (Hispaniola island), this site was one of the earliest and most affluent in Caribbean colonial history. The Decolonial approach used here critically analyzes and reinterprets primary data about Concepción from the point of view of those colonized, particularly non-elite, Indigenous peoples, and those of African descent. This approach uses various sources of data to recreate early lifeways, and helps gain a better understanding of the process through which the Spanish-American cultural tradition was created, and later disseminated, to the rest of Latin America.

Book Myths and Realities of Caribbean History

Download or read book Myths and Realities of Caribbean History written by Basil A. Reid and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2009-04-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to debunk eleven popular and prevalent myths about Caribbean history. Using archaeological evidence, it corrects many previous misconceptions promulgated by history books and oral tradition as they specifically relate to the pre-Colonial and European-contact periods. It informs popular audiences, as well as scholars, about the current state of archaeological/historical research in the Caribbean Basin and asserts the value of that research in fostering a better understanding of the region’s past. Contrary to popular belief, the history of the Caribbean did not begin with the arrival of Europeans in 1492. It actually started 7,000 years ago with the infusion of Archaic groups from South America and the successive migrations of other peoples from Central America for about 2,000 years thereafter. In addition to discussing this rich cultural diversity of the Antillean past, Myths and Realities of Caribbean History debates the misuse of terms such as “Arawak” and “Ciboneys,” and the validity of Carib cannibalism allegations.
