This hobby, also listed as a sport, boasts a practitioner membership of over thirty-five thousand in the UK alone, the history of which is covered in depth from the development of electro-magnetism, leading to an ever-increasing number of inventions, including machines for the detection of explosive devices which morphed into the metal detector as we know it today.

Book excerpt: This study reports on a community archaeology and metal-detecting project, carried out on a greenfield site destined for development as housing. This unique study draws on the experience of the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, which joined together in a co-operative enterprise involving the York Archaelogical Trust and the City of York Council, to hold a number of open days on the site of the proposed new village on the edge of the city of York. The event was designed to involve the local community and particularly local metal detectorists in the archaeological examination of the site as part of the planning process. Archaeology and metal detecting outlines good working practice and presents guidelines and protocols on how to integrate metal detector users and other members of the community into the planning and development process. Community involvement in the archaeological investigation of greenfield sites was found to provide a great opportunity for local people, including metal detectorists, to take part in integrated research into the history of their local surroundings and the processes involved can be applied to any greenfield development in the UK.

Innovation consists of any change in technology which has tangible and lasting effect on human practices, whether or not it provides utilitarian advantages. Prehistoric societies were never static, but the tempo of innovation occasionally increased to the point that we can refer to transformation taking place. Prehistorians must therefore identify factors promoting or hindering innovation.This volume stems from an international workshop, organised by the Collaborative Research Centre 1266 'Scales of Transformation' at Kiel University in November 2017. The meeting challenged its participants to detect and explain technological change in the past and its role in transformation processes, using archaeological and ethnographic case studies. The papers draw mainly on examples from prehistoric Europe, but case-studies from Iran, the Indus Valley, and contemporary central America are also included. The authors adopt several perspectives, including cultural-historical, economic, environmental, demographic, functional, and agent-based approaches.These case studies often rely on interdisciplinary research, whereby field archaeology, archaeometric analysis, experimental archaeology and ethnographic research are used together to observe and explain innovations and changes in the artisan's repertoire. The results demonstrate that interdisciplinary research is becoming essential to understanding transformation phenomena in prehistoric archaeology, superseding typo-chronological description and comparison.This book is a scholarly publication aimed at academic researchers, particularly archaeologists and archaeological scientists working on ceramics, osseous and metal artifacts.
