Combining intensive research by author Judith Bense, a lifelong specialist on the Spanish West Florida period, with a century’s worth of additional data, this landmark study brings to light four presidio locations that have long been overshadowed by the presidio at St. Augustine to the east, revealing the rest of the story of early Spanish Florida. Bense details a history fraught with catastrophe—hurricanes, war against France and England, and treaties that forced the Spanish base in West Florida to be uprooted and rebuilt four times. Examining each presidio, including associated military outposts, a shipwreck, and refugee mission villages of the Apalachee and Yamasee Indians, this book provides four discrete, sequential windows into the Spanish presence in the region. Bense compares the population to that of Presidio San Agustĺn, established 133 years earlier, revealing very different communities, people, and local customs. Interwoven with these historical findings is an account of how the general public has participated in investigations in the region, providing readers with an understanding of eighteenth-century West Florida and the development of public archaeology in the state from the person who initiated and directed much of the research. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1989, the Archaeological and Historical Research Institute (AHRI) entered into negotiations with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to establish a five-year field school at Fort Craig beginning in June of 1990. The project was designed to serve a number of purposes: (a) to operate an archaeological field school for the training of students and the interested public; (b) to assess the nature and extent of cultural resources at the site and to serve as a guide for any future research that may be undertaken; and (c) to establish a foundation for the BLM's public interpretation program at the site. The five seasons of fieldwork were conducted from 1990 to 1994 during the summer and fall. This report describes the results of the archaeological excavations and historical records search conducted by the AHRI at the Fort Craig National Historic site.

Book excerpt: From 20 to 31 August 2001, Brockington and Associates, Inc., performed an intensive historical resources survey (Phase I) within the propose expansion site for the Fort Barrancas National Cemetery, at the Naval Air Station Pensacola (NASP), Escambia County, Florida. The project are includes an estimated 50 acres near the existing Fort Barrancas National Cemetery. We recorded and evaluated one archaeological site (8ES1435 and seven isolated finds during our field investigations. Site 8ES1435 is a historic/modern refuse dump. The site was previously identified in the 198 Archaeological Sensitivity Map Survey conducted by the University of West Florida (UWF). However, the site was mis-plotted on maps generated from that survey. According to the site form, 8ES1435 is the remains of the Old Hospital and a historic/modern trash dump. The site has been heavily impacted by earth-moving activities and does not likely contain intact deposits. It is questionable as to whether the deposits are even associated with a medical facility. Further, some looting of deposits has occurred. Site 8ES1435 is not recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Place (NRHP) and no further archaeological investigations should be required at this location.
