Book An Archaeological Guide to Northern Central America

Download or read book An Archaeological Guide to Northern Central America written by Joyce Kelly and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tikal, Copán, Uaxactún - ancient Maya cities whose names conjure up romance, mystery, and science all at once. Joyce Kelly’s clear descriptions and captivating photographs of these and many other sites will make you want to pack your bags and head for Central America. And when you arrive, this guidebook will not let you down. It covers 38 sites and 25 museums - more than any other guidebook - in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Kelly’s information is accurate and up to date: she has visited every site personally. The descriptions include all the major, well-known sites and many not appearing other guidebooks. Kelly describes each site and museum, from its pyramids and temples to its hieroglyphic stairways and "eccentric flints." She includes many site plans, and her description of each site includes its ancient history as well as its recent archaeological activity. Equally important, Kelly describes exactly how to get there. Clear maps and precise written directions include the distance (in miles and kilometers) and the driving time required for each segment of the trip. If you need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to negotiate rutted dirt roads, Kelly tells you. If you need a guide, she tells you where to find one.

Book Ancient Maya Wetland Agriculture

Download or read book Ancient Maya Wetland Agriculture written by Mary Deland Pohl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in the orientation of archaeological research in the post-World War n period affected Maya studies. The cultural ecological perspective, which was rising to prominence, put an old debate in bold relief: How had this prehistoric civilization adapted to the tropical forest environment? How could swidden cultivation have sustained the unexpectedly high population densities that settlement pattern studies appeared to be revealing? Had the ancient Maya practiced some from of intensive agriculture? Archaeologist Dennis E. Puleston went to the Maya Lowlands to investigate geographer Alfred H. Siemens's reports of possible intensive agriculture ("ridged fields") seen from the air and to study prehistoric Maya cultivation and civilization from a cultural ecological perspective. This volume presents the results of the Rio Hondo Project field research on Albion Island in northern Belize from 1973 to 1980 with the addition of selected results from Pohl's continuing work in northern Belize.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly detailed analysis of stone tools recovered from excavations at two sites on the coral island of Ambergris Caye, off the coast of Belize, which revealed evidence of continued occupation on the island from c.100 BC until well into the Historic period. The study of the wear of tools provides a clear picture of the ways in which the Maya exploited the island's natural resources, notably fish, shell, coral and salt, while comparison of the sites shows the level of interaction between communities. Sections present a tool typology and discuss lithic technology, raw materials and the archaeological context and distribution of the assemblages.

Book Classic Maya Polychrome Stucco Sculptures from Louisville Belize

Download or read book Classic Maya Polychrome Stucco Sculptures from Louisville Belize written by Astrid Runggaldier and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2004 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s an amateur archaeologist discovered the largest number of model[l]ed human heads from a single Maya building', which were recovered with little regard for stratigraphy. This volume reports on excavations in 2000 and 2002 at the rapidly-disappearing site of Louisville which aimed to reunite this important discovery with its archaeological context, an aim in which it succeeded. The book includes an illustrated catalogue of the stucco heads, reconstructing the many lost examples from drawings made at the time of their original discovery, and examines associated finds, structures and deposits. Finally, Runggaldier touches upon the function of these heads which, she argues, are clearly a form of portraiture, with each head depicting individual men and women. Colour photographs of the surviving heads completes the book.
