Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Archaeological Subjects, Vol. 2 of 2: And on Various Questions Connected With the History of Art, Science, and Literature in the Middle Ages To people who were conquering and colonizing, no science would be more attractive than that of geo graphy, especially when they were at the same time receiving a new faith, founded on events which had occurred in countries far distant from their own homes. Many circumstances which have escaped the ravages of time, show us how much attention was paid by the Germanic conquerors to geography in the dark ages immediately following the overthrow of the Western Empire. Even the song of the bard ap pears to have been most welcome when it told of the different countries through which he had wandered. The fragment which has been published, under the title of the Traveller's Song, is one of the most re markable relics of early anglo-saxon poetry. At a later period than that to which this piece evidently belongs, in the beginning of the eighth century, we learn from the letters of Boniface that, among the manuscripts then brought continually from the con tinent into this island, our anglo-saxon forefathers were particularly desirous of possessing treatises on cosmography. Book Essays in Ancient History and Antiquities Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays in Ancient History and Antiquities Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by Thomas de Quincey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Ancient History and Antiquities, Vol. 7 [The following are brief general notes with wtiich Mr. De Quincey introduced "The Caesars," and Plato's "Republic" when revising the latest edition of his works.] "The Caesars," it may be right to mention, was written in a situation which denied me the use of books; so that with the exception of a few penciled extracts in a pocket-book from the Augustan history, I was obliged to depend upon ray memory for materials, in so far as respected facts. These materials for the Western Empire are not more scanty than meagre; and in that proportion so much the greater is the temptation which they offer to free and skeptical speculation. To this temptation I have yielded intermittingly; but from a fear (perhaps a cowardly fear) of being classed as a dealer in licentious paradox, I checked myself exactly where the largest license might have been properly allowed to a bold spirit of incredulity. In particular, I cannot bring myself to believe, nor ought therefore to have assumed the tone of a believer, in the inhuman atrocities charged upon the earlier Caesars. Guided by my own instincts of truth and probability, I should, for instance, have summarily exploded the most revolting among the crimes imputed to Nero. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Archaeology of Our Popular Phrases, and Nursery Rhymes, Vol. 1 of 2 It will not be denied, I suppose, that English and anglo-saxon are, at least, sister-languages, and if so, as the offspring of a same parent, at one stage of existence an identical language. And if we believe (which I do) the anglo-saxon and the Low Saxon (still surviving, in the main, in what we now call the Dutch) were once the same language, our own must at one period have been as these then were, also the same language. He was intelligible to the provincials whom he wanted to convince. The more educated Corinthians eriti cized his style (2 Cor. X. It was too full of Hebraisms and Aramaisms. It had no flavour of literary Greek. But it was a real, living, spoken tongue, and that was better. He speaks it, and dictates it also, with a manifest glow of thought. It undergoes no sensible change in ten years. He does not think in Aramaic and translate into Greek. He thinks in the tongue that he speaks and writes. He has the Septuagint text by heart, though he often varies a word or phrase, to emphasize the application. In other words, Saul the Pharisee is also the Hellenist Paulus. We have no proof that he attended the Greek schools of his city. But a nature so alert and sympathetic could not be brought thus near to Hellenic influence without feeling its power. We can infer little from his quotation of a line of Menander in 1 Cor. Xv. It was possibly a current quotation - like many a line from Shakespeare to-day. The same may be said of the passage from Aratus or Cleanthes cited at Athens (acts xvii. Or the line of Epimenides in Titus i. 12. But if he was as unread in Greek literature as some suppose, then his careful recollection of lines so casually heard, and his remarkably apt quotation of them, betray all the more his mental leanings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Archaeology of Our Popular Phrases, and Nursery Rhymes, Vol. 2 of 2 Tax him with a designed mis-statement of the fact. Of the etymology of the term Pnov can, I have found no ttace in any work known to me; but take it to be as the Dutch phrase procca werpe (1. E. Experience sends forth proof produces; tried fact produces ascertained truth is the mother, or parent, always implying, of the subject or question in view, when the sentence is used. Thus, a Paovnan is as a sentence grounded in or produced by experience; an expression founded in and approved by proof or trial of the matter in point. Fracco, proof, proof, experience, trial. Werpe, the third person potential mood of women, to produce, to' give birth to, to send forth, to put out or forwards. P and b are well-established intermutating sounds. V and so are a same aspirate, and, when pronounced continuously, ashore, a same sound. F, v, and p, also interchange in use; fife and pipe are a same word, and so are the Dutch viggbo, bigghe, pigghe, and our pig. Er prosce werpe [here experience teams] sounds a proverb [in French proverbe], of which proverbium h the Latinized form. So that if I am right in this view of the word, to develope or account for our proverbs, would be to develope or account for tried truths, truths produced by the general experience of society, consequently well own to all, and thus a task of no great urgency at least, if not a supererogatory concern altogether.
