Some tell the story that she was an innocent victim caught between two kings who wanted to possess her. Those stories are lies. I will tell you the true story of Helen of Troy. My name is Helena my story begins when my mother had taken ill and was lying on her death bed. Some of the elders and Physicians in my father’s court thought it may have been the pox that killed my mother, but I knew better. I knew it was witch craft that had taken my mother from me. My father would disappear for days to the temple of Athena to pray for my mother’s good health. My mother’s health continued to worsen as she became bed ridden and rail thin in a matter of months. The castle was overcast with despair; everyone knew that my mother was dying. Everyone except me, I still had hope that whatever witchcraft that had befallen my mother would soon be lifted.

Book excerpt: William Mouton was the first commander of the French speaking Arcadian Guards which had been formed by his first cousin, Gen. Alfred Mouton. William enlisted as a First Lieutenant in the Arcadian Guards on Oct. 5, 1861. The two Moutons were grandsons of an Acadian exile from Nova Scotia. and apparently named the unit to honor the ancestral country of many of the men who volunteered. The majority of the men of the Arcadian Guards were also of Acadian ancestry. An exception were the men from Avoyelles Parish whose ancestors were mostly from older Colonoal French Creole families. When the Guards were assigned as Company F of the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, William Mouton was elected captain. By the end of the war he was a lt. colonel. The 18th saw action in Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama before returning to Louisiana. They were one of regiments which made up General Mouton's Army during the Red River Campaign, which brought them right back to their home territory. This book contains a little of the story of their service as they fought as well list the soldiers who were in the Arcadian Guards of the 18th Regiment.

Book Delaware Army National Guard

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Delaware National Guard traces its roots to 1655, when the Swedish Colonial government formed a militia to defend itself. That tradition carried through Dutch and then English control of the colony. The militia served in all five French and Indian Wars and then distinguished itself during the Revolutionary War as the First Delaware Regiment of the Continental Army, earning its "Blue Hen" nickname. The Delaware militia continued to serve in every major war, and currently it remains in the forefront. Images of America: Delaware Army National Guard presents images of this fabled organization that survived from the Spanish-American War to the present. The people, places, equipment, and facilities of the Delaware National Guard are illustrated in this compilation of historic photographs from the collection of the Delaware Military Heritage and Education Foundation. Brig. Gen. Kennard R. Wiggins Jr. (DE ANG Retired) is a third-generation Delaware Guardsman who served in the National Guard for over 37 years. Currently he serves as executive director of the Delaware Military Heritage and Education Foundation, Inc., which maintains an extensive archive of Delaware National Guard images. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.

Book excerpt: This book is about Arcadia and the pastoral tradition; what it has meant for successive generations and their vision of the landscape, as well as the implications this has had for its design and management. Today the concept of Arcadia, and way it has shaped our landscape, is dimly perceived and little understood by landscape architects and those responsible for the management of land. This is in marked contrast to previous centuries when the vision of Arcadia and the pastoral was implanted by education among the more privileged in society. Young men spent many hours translating and learning by rote the words of Virgil and other classical authors and on the Grand Tour they would be introduced to work of painters like Poussin and Claude and their interpretations of the Ideal pastoral landscape. Today Arcadia holds as powerful an influence as at any time in the past and it is important that we plan our urban environment in ways that harmonize with the natural world. Arcadian Visions provides an alternative landscape history for all those involved with the landscape - either through its design, management, use or enjoyment. It begins by examining the origins of Arcadia and the pastoral in the classical poetry of Theocritus and Virgil, and the effects of, and on, Christianity before outlining its development in renaissance Italy and subsequently in the Netherlands, America and England. It concludes by looking at how Arcadian ecology is bringing about a reappraisal of the pastoral in the 21st century.
