Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arbutus, 1909 However, by the statistics above quoted, Indiana University stands eleventh among the twenty-five leading colleges and uni versities graded according to the total attendance in the Liberal Arts Department, and sixth, by the same standard, among all the State universities. This much higher proportional rank, and especially this higher numerical position among all the institutions of the land which offer liberal arts courses, is noteworthy, and should be a matter of considerable pride to the alumni of the university and the citizens of Indiana. In the last quarter century the chief concern of the educators of this country has been the establishment and promotion of the technical and professional departments and schools. The argu ments raised at the beginning of the last century by some of the scientific giants of that period greatly influenced college curricula, especially in America. Since the beginning of the utilitarian cam paign we have yielded more and more to the demands for useful education, for education that will fit men and women for the par ticular kind of work which is to be their vocation in life. This is the day of specialists has been the cry, and the universities have listened to the cry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There is a certain blindness in human beings which consists in being unable to see things from other people's points of view. The college stage seems ludicrously small, but the tragedies and comedies which are passing are not less real to the participators than those that give zest to the great drama outside. Book The End and the Beginning

Download or read book The End and the Beginning written by Hermynia Zur Mühlen and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book What Lips My Lips Have Kissed

Download or read book What Lips My Lips Have Kissed written by Daniel Mark Epstein and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A noted biographer and poet illuminates the unique woman who wrote the greatest American love poetry of the twentieth century What Lips My Lips Have Kissed is the story of a rare sort of American genius, who grew up in grinding poverty in Camden, Maine. Nothing could save the sensitive child but her talent for words, music and drama, and an inexorable desire to be loved. When she was twenty, her poetry would make her famous; at thirty she would be loved by readers the world over. Edna St. Vincent Millay was widely considered to be the most seductive woman of her age. Few men could resist her, and many women also fell under her spell. From the publication of her first poems until the scandal over Fatal Interview twenty years later, gossip about the poet's liberated lifestyle prompted speculation about who might be the real subject of her verses. Using letters, diaries and journals of the poet and her lovers that have only recently become available, Daniel Mark Epstein tells the astonishing story of the life, dedicated to art and love, that inspired the sublime lyrics of Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Book Blockbusting in Baltimore

Download or read book Blockbusting in Baltimore written by W. Edward Orser and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study of racial upheaval and urban transformation in Baltimore, Maryland investigates the impact of "blockbusting"—a practice in which real estate agents would sell a house on an all-white block to an African American family with the aim of igniting a panic among the other residents. These homeowners would often sell at a loss to move away, and the real estate agents would promote the properties at a drastic markup to African American buyers. In this groundbreaking book, W. Edward Orser examines Edmondson Village, a west Baltimore rowhouse community where an especially acute instance of blockbusting triggered white flight and racial change on a dramatic scale. Between 1955 and 1965, nearly twenty thousand white residents, who saw their secure world changing drastically, were replaced by blacks in search of the American dream. By buying low and selling high, playing on the fears of whites and the needs of African Americans, blockbusters set off a series of events that Orser calls "a collective trauma whose significance for recent American social and cultural history is still insufficiently appreciated and understood." Blockbusting in Baltimore describes a widely experienced but little analyzed phenomenon of recent social history. Orser makes an important contribution to community and urban studies, race relations, and records of the African American experience.

Book Essay on the Geography of Plants

Download or read book Essay on the Geography of Plants written by Alexander von Humboldt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) looms large over the natural sciences. His 1799–1804 research expedition to Central and South America with botanist Aimé Bonpland set the course for the great scientific surveys of the nineteenth century, and inspired such essayists and artists as Emerson, Goethe, Thoreau, Poe, and Church. The chronicles of the expedition were published in Paris after Humboldt’s return, and first among them was the 1807 “Essay on the Geography of Plants.” Among the most cited writings in natural history, after the works of Darwin and Wallace, this work appears here for the first time in a complete English-language translation. Covering far more than its title implies, it represents the first articulation of an integrative “science of the earth, ” encompassing most of today’s environmental sciences. Ecologist Stephen T. Jackson introduces the treatise and explains its enduring significance two centuries after its publication.
