Book Application of Parameter Estimation to a Numerical Model of a Glacial Aquifer System Aberdeen South Dakota b Using Pilot Points to Approximate Heterogeneity

Download or read book Application of Parameter Estimation to a Numerical Model of a Glacial Aquifer System Aberdeen South Dakota b Using Pilot Points to Approximate Heterogeneity written by Katrina Marini and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The glacial aquifer system near Aberdeen, South Dakota, was modeled using MODFLOW-NWT with parameter estimation done in PEST. The glacial aquifers consist of the Elm aquifer at elevations of 1225 to 1400 feet (ft), the Middle James aquifer at 1150 to 1250 ft, and the Deep James aquifer at 950 to 1175 ft. The three aquifers are generally separated by till but hydraulically connected in limited areas. Pilot points were used to approximate the heterogeneity of horizontal hydraulic conductivity in the Elm aquifer where pumping test data were not available. Zones of horizontal hydraulic conductivity were defined using a glacial landform map. The calibrated model demonstrated that pilot points allowed the model to more accurately simulate the complexity of the Elm aquifer than that of the Middle James and Deep James aquifers, for which pilot points were not used. Final horizontal hydraulic conductivity in the Elm aquifer varied from 4 to 1,728 feet per day (ft/day).
