Book Guide to the Aquatic Insects of New Zealand

Download or read book Guide to the Aquatic Insects of New Zealand written by Michael J. Winterbourn and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this excellent identification guide to aquatic insects in New Zealand has been updated with the latest information, making it an essential resource as the demand for river surveys and water quality studies continues to grow. Since the third edition was published five years ago, there have been great advances in our knowledge of New Zealand's aquatic insects. This edition includes information from several new publications about the systematics of New Zealand aquatic insects. More than 80 new titles have been added to the reference list and cited in the text; this serves both to document taxonomic changes and to guide the reader to the expanding literature on the aquatic insects of NZ. The book provides keys to enable insects to be identified to the family or genus level. Notes on distribution, habitat, and problems likely to be encountered with identification are included, along with full references, glossary of terms, and an index of taxa, common names, and general subjects. This is a joint publication venture of the Entomological Society of New Zealand (Inc.) and the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society.

Book Wetlands Ecology

Download or read book Wetlands Ecology written by Susanta Kumar Chakraborty and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-11 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses current knowledge and challenges with the ecological management and conservation of wetlands, with a focus on the East Kolkata Wetlands of India. This area is referred to as a Ramsar Site, a designation given to areas with special protection statuses, since it is the largest natural waste recycling system in the world. The site faces many threats to its biodiversity and ecosystem functioning due to anthropogenic activity in the region, and therefore an assessment of the ecosystem services, bio-ecological uniqueness, and issues stemming from climate change and human impacts is needed to develop protection strategies for the future ecological functioning and sustainability of the wetlands. The authors use GIS and remote sensing techniques to assess and monitor harmful industrial and environmental impacts on the wetlands, and to inform mitigation and conservation strategies in the face of ongoing threats such as pollution, habitat destruction and bioinvasion. The book also highlights various social and economic aspects tied to the functioning and management of the wetlands, along with ecological, biological, and physio-chemical considerations. The study will be of use to students and researchers in aquatic ecology, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability and conservation, as well as to environmental planners, engineers, and policymakers.

Book Drones and Geographical Information Technologies in Agroecology and Organic Farming

Download or read book Drones and Geographical Information Technologies in Agroecology and Organic Farming written by Massimo De Marchi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although organic farming and agroecology are normally not associated with the use of new technologies, it’s rapid growth, new technologies are being adopted to mitigate environmental impacts of intensive production implemented with external material and energy inputs. GPS, satellite images, GIS, drones, help conventional farming in precision supply of water, pesticides, fertilizers. Prescription maps define the right place and moment for interventions of machinery fleets. Yield goal remains the key objective, integrating a more efficient use or resources toward an economic-environmental sustainability. Technological smart farming allows extractive agriculture entering the sustainability era. Societies that practice agroecology through the development of human-environmental co-evolutionary systems represent a solid model of sustainability. These systems are characterized by high-quality agroecosystems and landscapes, social inclusion, and viable economies. This book explores the challenges posed by the new geographic information technologies in agroecology and organic farming. It discusses the differences among technology-laden conventional farming systems and the role of technologies in strengthening the potential of agroecology. The first part reviews the new tools offered by geographic information technologies to farmers and people. The second part provides case studies of most promising application of technologies in organic farming and agroecology: the diffusion of hyperspectral imagery, the role of positioning systems, the integration of drones with satellite imagery. The third part of the book, explores the role of agroecology using a multiscale approach from the farm to the landscape level. This section explores the potential of Geodesign in promoting alliances between farmers and people, and strengthening food networks, whether through proximity urban farming or asserting land rights in remote areas in the spirit of agroecological transition. Book excerpt: Lost World of Rēkohu explores the extraordinary fossil record of one of the most remote regions of the planet--the Chatham Islands. Once the home of the mysterious Moriori people, this archipelago approximately 850km east of mainland New Zealand preserves a rock archive from a dynamic time in Earth's history when the southern continents were land-locked together near the South Pole 100 million years ago. Isolated for 83 million years, we now know since the dawn of the new millennium that this ancient region was heavily forested with both avian and non-avian dinosaurs, and the warm waters hosted the largest sea monsters--marine reptiles--that ever lived. This diversity of life on land and in the sea tells a tale never told before in Zealandia, the Moriori's magical land of the 'Misty Skies'.
