Download or read book A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America written by J. Reese Voshell and published by McDonald and Woodward Publishing Company. This book was released on 2002 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular interest in the observation and study of freshwater invertebrates is increasing. This book meets the needs of this growing audience of naturalists, environmentalists, anglers, teachers, students, and others by providing substantive information in easy-to-understand, non-technical language for many groups of invertebrates commonly found in the streams, lakes, ponds, and other freshwater environments of North America. Section One provides background information on the biology and ecology of freshwater organisms and environments and explains why and how invertebrates can be studied, simply and without complex equipment, in the field and the laboratory. Section Two describes nearly 100 of the most common groups of invertebrates, and for each group a whole-body colour illustration is provided along with brief text pointing out the most important features that identify members of the group. Section Three contains in-depth descriptions of the life history, behaviour, and ecology of the various invertebrate groups, and explains their important ecological contributions and relationships to humans. The Guide is broad in scope, geographically and taxonomically, and it is written at a substantive yet easily accessible level that will appeal to both novices and those with more advanced knowledge of the subject. It also contains more than 100 specially commissioned colour illustrations by the well-known scientific illustrator Amy Bartlett Wright that will greatly facilitate the easy and rapid identification of specimens.

Book excerpt: "The purposes of these surveys are to provide aquatic habitat and water quality baseline data to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to be used in the evaluation of: (1) livestock grazing impacts on the flora and fauna of Big Creek, Birch Creek, Thoms Creek, and Trout Creek; and (2) impacts from increased recreational use on the potable water supply and aquatic ecosystem of Rock Creek within Desolation Canyon. These baseline data are to be used in management decision formulation by the BLM for the management of land/water resources on national resource lands (NRL) in Utah"--Page 1
Download or read book Freshwater Biomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates written by David M. Rosenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American and European governments have adopted national programs for environmental monitoring and assessment that include the use of aquatic biota. These programs will use a variety of indicators of environmental health; benthic macroinvertebrates are one of the most promising of them. The chapters in this book deal with the many different approaches available for using benthic macroinvertebrates in biological monitoring programs.
Download or read book Intermittent Rivers and Ephemeral Streams written by Thibault Datry and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermittent Rivers and Ephemeral Streams: Ecology and Management takes an internationally broad approach, seeking to compare and contrast findings across multiple continents, climates, flow regimes, and land uses to provide a complete and integrated perspective on the ecology of these ecosystems. Coupled with this, users will find a discussion of management approaches applicable in different regions that are illustrated with relevant case studies. In a readable and technically accurate style, the book utilizes logically framed chapters authored by experts in the field, allowing managers and policymakers to readily grasp ecological concepts and their application to specific situations. - Provides up-to-date reviews of research findings and management strategies using international examples - Explores themes and parallels across diverse sub-disciplines in ecology and water resource management utilizing a multidisciplinary and integrative approach - Reveals the relevance of this scientific understanding to managers and policymakers

Download or read book Assessing the Ecological Integrity of Running Waters written by M. Jungwirth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of the ecological integrity of running waters is a prerequisite to an understanding of the effects of human alterations. The evaluation of degradation processes provides key information on how to avoid further negative impacts. The success of future conservation, mitigation and restoration activities will rely on sound assessment methodologies and their ecological relevance and applicability. Assessment methodologies are therefore an integral part of sustainable river management. This book synthesizes and discusses state-of-the-art experiences in assessment methodologies. Including the latest knowledge on structures, processes and functions of running waters as a fundamental basis for developing adequate assessment methods, the book focuses on method development, application, and in particular on integrated assessment methods. This book is directed at scientists and managers with the aim of more effective preservation, restoration and maintenance of the ecological integrity of running water ecosystems.
Download or read book Guide to British Freshwater Macroinvertebrates for Biotic Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides straightforward guides to the identification of macroinvertebrate families included in biotic assessment in the UK, covering flatworms, annelids, molluscs, larger crustaceans, arachnids and all aquatic orders of insects. By making extensive use of appropriate methods for different groups, including dichotomous keys, pictorial guides and tables, along with copious line drawing illustrations and general tips on identification, it allows rapid and confident identification of the major groups of British freshwater invertebrates. It has been extensively tested, and illustrations are designed to show both the appearance of whole animals and, where appropriate, key identification features. For each group, a brief indication of typical habitat is given, to further facilitate identification. An extensive list of keys and guides for further identification is also provided.

Download or read book Parasite Communities Patterns and Processes written by Gerald W. Esch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We first discussed the possibility of organizing a symposium on helminth communities in June, 1986. At that time, we were engaged in writing a joint paper on potential structuring mechanisms in helminth communities; we disagreed on a number of issues. We felt the reason for such debate was because the discipline was in a great state of flux, with many new concepts and approaches being introduced with increasing frequency. After consider able discussion about the need, scope and the inevitable limitations of such a symposium, we decided that the time was ripe to bring other ecologists, engaged in similar research, face-to-face. There were many individuals from whom to choose; we selected those who were actively publishing on helminth communities or those who had expertise in areas which we felt were particularly appropriate. We compiled a list of potential participants, contacted them and received unanimous support to organize such a symposium. Our intent was to cover several broad areas, fully recognizing that breadth negates depth (at least with a publisher's limitation on the number of pages). We felt it important to consider patterns amongst different kinds of hosts because this is where we had disagreed among ourselves.
