Book Managing Constraints to Water Source Development

Download or read book Managing Constraints to Water Source Development written by Andrew G. Graham and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 1999 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes research performed by the Department of Civil Engineering on water and revenue loss problems in water utilities commonly referred to as 'unaccounted-for water'. The research was conducted by the principal investigator and graduate students with assistance from Community Consultants, Inc. of Springville, Utah. The American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AWWARF) sponsored this project. The objectives of this effort are to: 1. assess the value of various methods used to measure quantities of water that are lost of not accounted for; 2. provide an appraisal of the techniques available to monitor such losses; 3. suggest standardized definitions for the terms used to describe the types and sources of water and revenue losses; and 4. identify solutions available to utilities to control such losses of water or revenue including generalized benefit/cost analysis of suggested solutions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to define regional opportunities foragricultural expansion and enhancement through water managementimprovements designed to relieve water constraints toagricultural development. The study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 consisted of a major compilation of water constraintliterature of interst to the study. Phase 2 involved thecompilation of a regional inventory of water constraints andspecific water management opportunities.

Book Water Requirements Availabilities Constraints and Recommended Federal Actions

Download or read book Water Requirements Availabilities Constraints and Recommended Federal Actions written by United States. Interagency Task Force on Water Resources and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a technical analysis of the Water Resources Council prepared to determine the degree to which the water resources of the United States will be able to accommodate potential increases in energy production. The study considers the competition of energy-related water requirements with existing or anticipated future water uses for other purposes; accommodation of energy-related water requirements with other competing uses; the magnitude and extent of any water supply shortages, water quality, institutional and other water supply problems (environmental, capital investment, manpower, inter-basin transfer) that may restrict or prevent selected future condition energy development scenarios from being implemented; water-related Federal actions required to overcome problems and constraints of the nature described above; the requirements which need to be placed on hydroelectric power generation capability to assist in meeting the Nation's energy needs.

Book Confronting the Nation s Water Problems

Download or read book Confronting the Nation s Water Problems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to confront the increasingly severe water problems faced by all parts of the country, the United States needs to make a new commitment to research on water resources. A new mechanism is needed to coordinate water research currently fragmented among nearly 20 federal agencies. Given the competition for water among farmers, communities, aquatic ecosystems and other users-as well as emerging challenges such as climate change and the threat of waterborne diseases-Confronting the Nation's Water Problems concludes that an additional $70 million in federal funding should go annually to water research. Funding should go specifically to the areas of water demand and use, water supply augmentation, and other institutional research topics. The book notes that overall federal funding for water research has been stagnant in real terms for the past 30 years and that the portion dedicated to research on water use and social science topics has declined considerably.

Book Water Resource Systems Planning and Management

Download or read book Water Resource Systems Planning and Management written by Daniel P. Loucks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license. This revised, updated textbook presents a systems approach to the planning, management, and operation of water resources infrastructure in the environment. Previously published in 2005 by UNESCO and Deltares (Delft Hydraulics at the time), this new edition, written again with contributions from Jery R. Stedinger, Jozef P. M. Dijkman, and Monique T. Villars, is aimed equally at students and professionals. It introduces readers to the concept of viewing issues involving water resources as a system of multiple interacting components and scales. It offers guidelines for initiating and carrying out water resource system planning and management projects. It introduces alternative optimization, simulation, and statistical methods useful for project identification, design, siting, operation and evaluation and for studying post-planning issues. The authors cover both basin-wide and urban water issues and present ways of identifying and evaluating alternatives for addressing multiple-purpose and multi-objective water quantity and quality management challenges. Reinforced with cases studies, exercises, and media supplements throughout, the text is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in water resource planning and management as well as for practicing planners and engineers in the field.

Book A Twenty First Century U S Water Policy

Download or read book A Twenty First Century U S Water Policy written by Juliet Christian-Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is zero hour for a new US water policy! At a time when many countries are adopting new national approaches to water management, the United States still has no cohesive federal policy, and water-related authorities are dispersed across more than 30 agencies. Here, at last, is a vision for what we as a nation need to do to manage our most vital resource. In this book, leading thinkers at world-class water research institution the Pacific Institute present clear and readable analysis and recommendations for a new federal water policy to confront our national and global challenges at a critical time. What exactly is at stake? In the 21st century, pressures on water resources in the United States are growing and conflicts among water users are worsening. Communities continue to struggle to meet water quality standards and to ensure that safe drinking water is available for all. And new challenges are arising as climate change and extreme events worsen, new water quality threats materialize, and financial constraints grow. Yet the United States has not stepped up with adequate leadership to address these problems. The inability of national policymakers to safeguard our water makes the United States increasingly vulnerable to serious disruptions of something most of us take for granted: affordable, reliable, and safe water. This book provides an independent assessment of water issues and water management in the United States, addressing emerging and persistent water challenges from the perspectives of science, public policy, environmental justice, economics, and law. With fascinating case studies and first-person accounts of what helps and hinders good water management, this is a clear-eyed look at what we need for a 21st century U.S. water policy.
