Book Appropriate Technologies for Environmental Protection in the Developing World

Download or read book Appropriate Technologies for Environmental Protection in the Developing World written by Ernest K. Yanful and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first edited compilation of selected, refereed papers submitted to ERTEP 2007. The selected papers either dealt with technologies or scientific work and policy findings that address specific environmental problems affecting humanity in general, but more specifically, people and ecosystems in developing countries. It was not necessary for the work to have been done in a developing country, but the findings and results must be appropriate or applicable to a developing country setting. It is acknowledged that environmental research, technology applications and policy implementation have been demonstrated to improve environmental sustainability and protection in several developed economies. The main argument of the book is that similar gains can be achieved in developing economies and economies in transition. The book is organized into six chapters along some of the key themes discussed at the conference: Environmental Health Management, Sustainable Energy and Fuel, Water Treatment, Purification and Protection, Mining and Environment, Soil Stabilization, and Environmental Monitoring. It is hoped that the contents of the book will provide an insight into some of the environmental and health mana- ment challenges confronting the developing world and the steps being taken to address them.

Book Technology for Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Technology for Students with Disabilities written by National School Boards Association and published by National School Boards Association. This book was released on 1997 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide presents strategies for applying technology to help students who have cognitive and physical disabilities, and shows how technology is useful not only in presenting curriculum and assessing students, but also in the administration and organization of special education programs. Case studies and descriptions of state-of-the-art applications illustrate how technology can help students with disabilities master complex materials and basic skills and how technology can support educators in assessing and evaluating students' progress. Chapter 1 describes the most common challenges associated with educating children with disabilities and discusses research-validated approaches in assistive instruction and assessment technologies. Chapter 2 demystifies the process of determining what technology will best meet student needs and discusses the cost effective acquisition of those technologies. Chapter 3 delineates strategies necessary to ensure that technology investments produce continuous learning improvements, including the establishment of a technology team and devising a long-range technology plan. Chapter 4 provides assistance in finding the help needed to make technology "pay off." It includes an extensive resource list that provides contact information and describes national, state, and local organizations, information centers, clearinghouses, and research group that provide services, information, and demonstrations of technology. An appendix includes relevant federal documents on assistive technology. (CR)

Book An Analysis of Technology Transition Within the Department of Defense

Download or read book An Analysis of Technology Transition Within the Department of Defense written by Donnie Tew and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate methods and the proper execution thereof are critical to the success of technology transition. A significant hurdle in this process is the phase in which the Science & Technology community is prepared to hand-off a technology, which has not achieved a sufficiently high enough Technology Readiness Level (TRL), Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL), or System Readiness Level (SRL) for the Engineering and Manufacturing community. This analysis concentrated on three technology transition factors: Organization, Policy, and Metrics (OPM). Organizational transformation encompasses the recent expansion of technology transition groups and initiatives within DoD. Additionally, the overall mindset of cooperative development and open communication are detailed within the Organizational focal area. The Policy focal area delves into the various DoD technology transition governing principles included in the DoD 5000, the Defense Acquisition Guidebook, and other governing documents. Lastly, the Technology Metrics focal area concentrates on the importance of technology maturation and how to qualitatively and objectively assess technologies. Thorough research was conducted on these areas to demonstrate DoD's recent efforts to bridge the gap and provide innovative solutions to the Warfighter within a reduced timeframe. Additionally, a case study analysis was conducted on a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Program, Boomerang, to highlight attributes of a successful technology transition.

Book Accelerating Technology Transition

Download or read book Accelerating Technology Transition written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-11-15 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerating the transition of new technologies into systems and products will be crucial to the Department of Defenses development of a lighter, more flexible fighting force. Current long transition times-ten years or more is now typical-are attributed to the complexity of the process. To help meet these challenges, the Department of Defense asked the National Research Council to examine lessons learned from rapid technology applications by integrated design and manufacturing groups. This report presents the results of that study, which was based on a workshop held to explore these successful cases. Three key areas emerged: creating a culture for innovation and rapid technology transition; methodologies and approaches; and enabling tools and databases.
