Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Strict Counterpoint So many pupils have acknowledged to me the advantages that have accrued to them from having understood and practised the application of Strict Counterpoint in composition in the strict style, that it seemed to me a short treatise on the subject might be serviceable. Very few teachers encourage the study of Strict Counterpoint in anything but its purely technical and analytical aspects. It is certain that very few students understand the function of the semibreve Canto Fermo. Still fewer realize that it can be eliminated, and that the application of the technique of Strict Counterpoint without this constant factor results in composition in the style of the Polyphonic Period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Counterpoint: Strict and Free Here every rule of harmony is observed, and the passage is perfectly correct. But if the different voices be examined singly, it will be seen that there iss very little melody, and almost no individuality about them. The Soprano and tenor parts each lie within the compass of a minor third, while the alto consists entirely of two notes. Such a passage, however correct as harmony, can scarcely be called counterpoint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. So much was he the master of contrapuntal theory and not its slave, that his music concealed his immense technique in its application. This is particularly true of his only opera, Oresteia, his chamber music, and especially his cantata On the Reading ofa Psalm. Book A Treatise on Strict Counterpoint Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Strict Counterpoint Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Francis Edward Gladstone and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Strict Counterpoint, Vol. 1 of 3 My acquaintance with Counterpoint began about Forty-five years ago; and, during the latter half of that period, circumstances have led me to give special attention to the art of part-writing in the strict style. I have read most of the books which have been published by those who are entitled to speak upon the subject; and yet I know not one which supplies all the needs of an earnest student. The precepts of the best writers sometimes fall short of sufficiency. The rules put forward by others are too often questionable, because they are mingled with individual prejudices; and sometimes precept and practice are not in accord. This condition of things is embarrassing to the tutor and discouraging to the pupil. I have therefore made an attempt in this book not only to supply full information upon minute points, but also to provide examples which shall be consistent with the rules laid down. Even a near approach to success in this endeavour may give help to those who desire to acquire more than a general knowledge of the subject. Download or read book Counterpoint Simplified Classic Reprint written by Francis Lodowick York and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Counterpoint Simplified Counterpoint was the earliest form of artistic musical composi tion. It was the outgrowth of the simplest attempts of two sing ers to sing together without producing discordant effects. In Counterpoint then, we are primarily concerned with the movement of voices or parts, and the student should endeavor from the begin ning to accustom himself to follow each part in its movement, to think, so to say, horizontally, instead of thinking as in Harmony, perpendicularly. It is to be remembered too, that Counterpoint is primarily a series of consonances, dissonances being introduced only under careful restrictions. There are three most important principles to be observed in all writing of Counterpoint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composers' Counterpoint: A Sequel to "Students' Counterpoint" As an educational process, this further poly phonic study may be best described as a legitimate and logical development or extension of that stricter method of part-writing which has been termed with equal convenience Students' Counterpoint. In the academical career of a modern musician, the time allowed for the study of Com posers' Counterpoint should properly occupy an intermediate position between the probationary period devoted to a necessary observance of the strict discipline of Students' Counterpoint, and that more congenial after-season, when (under the direction of his teacher) the student is called upon to put into practice his knowledge of polyphonic principles by attempting the construction of entire movements in Fugal, Symphonic, and other forms.viii preface. Book Manual of Single Double Triple and Quadruple Counterpoint Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Single Double Triple and Quadruple Counterpoint Classic Reprint written by S. Jadassohn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Single, Double, Triple and Quadruple Counterpoint This Manual forms an introduction to the study of single, double, triple and quadruple counterpoint in the strict style. All rules, directions, principles and observations contained in the book, are founded on the contrapuntal style of Bach, Handel, and other classic masters who followed our tonal system of major and minor keys in their writings. The aim of the pupils studies in counterpoint is, to prepare him for the study of canon and fugue; but even the disciple of art who does not intend, or is not able, to become a composer, will be enabled by such study to penetrate deeper into the works of the classic masters, and better to apprehend the sublimest creations of their art. But let no one imagine that in a course of contrapuntal study it suffices only to read or learn the rules; this could be done very easily and quickly. True progress can be made in this, as in all other disciplines of art, only by dint of serious and conscientious work. Not until the student shall have worked out the exercises contained in the Manual in proper sequence and with due attention, will he be prepared to proceed to the study of Canon and Fugue. Preface To The Third Edition. Together with the Third Edition, a considerable number of "Exercises and Examples for the Studies in Counterpoint" have been published separately. Both teachers and students will find them of practical utility when used in conjunction with the exercises given in the Manual itself.
