Book An Introduction to Applied Psychology Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Applied Psychology Classic Reprint written by Coleman R. Griffith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Applied Psychology There is one fact about the study of human nature that causes every teacher no end of amazement. This fact is that the student, even of a book on applied psychology, will suppose that the events he reads about and the conclusions that are drawn must concern some Other person than himself. This very day, for example, the reader of these lines will have been attracted by an advertisement, signed for some insurance that he did not want, remarked the strange differences between himself and his friends, followed a custom, either in clothing, in political opinion, Orin social attitude, used an awkward method of learning an oration, given unreliable testimony about an accident, forgotten the name of a familiar person, suffered from some one of the many forms of maladjustment, or found himself ill-adapted to his curriculum; but when he reads about the psychological side of these various episodes, he will still not believe that he is discovering any information that pertains to his own conduct. Nothing can be so plain as the fact that the persons who study this book are the persons of whom the experimental psychologist speaks and writes. That most of us do not know this to be true is due, in part, to our own lack of imagination and, in part, to the way in which the facts and principles of psychology are presented to us. So far as the student is concerned, every attempt has been made in the follow ing pages constantly to remind him that he is looking at a fairly ac curate photograph oi himself and of his doings. The only way to know What the science of human nature is about and how it can be applied to various situations is to remember the situations in which the reader himself has been placed or to imagine those in which he may be placed. He must remember, also, what he and others did and thought about them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mind and the Nation

Download or read book Mind and the Nation written by J. Herbert Parsons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind and the Nation: A Precis of Applied Psychology It is instructive to cast a glance over the topics which have hitherto formed the chief items in these discussions on reconstruction. AS might be expected Industry looms largest. In the Report of the Committee of the Privy Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for the year 1916-17 we find a list of Standing Committees on Engineer ing, Metallurgy, Mining, and Glass and Optical Instruments. Allied to these are research committees on Mine Rescue Apparatus and Abrasives and Polishing Powders, as well as inquiry committees on Lubricants and Lubrication, Zinc and Copper, and Irish Peat. An Appendix gives the text of a pamphlet on the Government Scheme for Industrial Research. Nearly allied to the various Industrial Schemes is Scientific Research, so nearly allied, indeed, that the boom in science, so far as it has any considerable public and political support, is directed almost entirely to the physical sciences. The scientists themselves emphasize and reiterate the importance Of pure science, but even the strongest argument is that only through it can material advance in the practical applications of science be attained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Psychology: Or Faculties of the Mind The Author ventures to suggest that no one who is thoroughly acquainted with the principles and proofs of what may be justly termed Synthetic, as distinguished from mere Analytic, Phrenology will deny that it forms the most concise and complete system of mental philo sophy and practical psychology in existence. All the actual evidence of modern experimental research, as the writer has endeavoured to point out elsewhere, tends to prove conclusively that the brain is not a single organ, brain-segment, or centre. The writer's defence and reply to adverse criticism will be found in the introduction. The system of psychology revealed by Phrenology is greatly in advance of that taught by Lock, Dugald Stewart, and others. For example, their primitive mental powers of Perception, Memory, and Judgment were, in truth, properties of several powers of the mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind at Work: A Handbook of Applied Psychology The study of the mind cannot properly be separated from the study of the body, for the two are most intimately related. We all know that when tired and hungry the brain refuses to work. We cannot think clearly. A glass of wine and a biscuit and a short rest restores to us our mental faculties. Or to put the case the other way, good news stimulates appetite, while shock or anxiety gives a distaste for food. These are simple and obvious illustrations; but there are much more remarkable ones that we shall have to discuss later on. The greater part of our mental life is necessarily made up of impressions of the outside world that reach us by means of our senses. The eyes and ears and other receptive organs are constantly telegraphing messages to the brain along the nerve fibres. It is one of the chief functions of the mind to interpret these messages, and they eventually, in some mysterious fashion, pass into the region of our consciousness. These primary sensations of a physical origin supply the science of psychology with a convenient starting-point for its investigation, and the study of sensation forms a link between the science of the body and the science of the mind. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Psychology for Nurses Mary F. Porter This little book is the outgrowth of a conviction, strengthened by some years of experience with hundreds of supposedly normal young people in schools and colleges, confirmed by my years of training in a neurological hospital and months of work in a big city general hospital, that it is of little value to help some people back to physical health if they are to carry with them through a prolonged life the miseries of a sick attitude. As nurses I believe it is our privilege and our duty to work for health of body and health of mind as inseparable. Experience has proved that too often the physically ill patient (hitherto nervously well) returns from hospital care addicted to the illness-accepting attitude for which the nurse must be held responsible. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. Book The Journal of Applied Psychology 1920 Vol 4 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Applied Psychology, 1920, Vol. 4 The preliminary work at the factory fell into two parts, getting personally oriented and getting in the proper rapport with those in authority. It was necessary at the outset to become familiar with the different types of work carried on at the factory and to learn the technical terminology. This knowledge was necessary for later analysis of the mental fac tors involved in various factory Operations. One of the assistants to the Factory Superintendent was detailed as aide to the writer, - conducting him about the factory, explaining the work and introducing him to various foremen so that it was possible to get acquainted and talk over the mental and physical qualifications for various kinds of work. A further study was made of the methods of accounting, time study and evaluating piece-work. These facts were of value in getting production ratings of men who were tested, and following up new workers. Data were secured on labor turnover to see what departments apparently needed the most attention. It was necessary, also, to become familiar with the executive organization in order to know to whom to go for information or to get various things done. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Applied Psychology, 1923, Vol. 7 A reader of the literature dealing with the Psychology of Ad vertising finds numerous articles written upon the effectiveness of various mechanical devices, the attention and memory value of size of space and the position on the page, the influence of color, style of type and its arrangement, the effectiveness of repeating the advertisement, etc. The problem of arousing the confidence of the consumer in the article advertised, the condi tions on which it depends, how belief in advertisements may be created and how it may be measured have been very_ lightly touched in experimental studies. The importance of these mat ters is emphasized in every textbook on advertising. The fact that the American people are each year induced to squander many millions of dollars in worthless securities through the medium of advertising in some form, and that warnings seem quite ineffective in protecting them, makes one curious about the basis of belief in advertising. It is not enough to say that the American people like to be fooled and that there is no scheme too wild to arouse the confidence of a large proportion of them. The advertiser should know that action is dependent upon belief and that belief in advertising depends upon conditions, some of which at least are under his control.
