Book Introduction to the Foundations of Applied Mathematics

Download or read book Introduction to the Foundations of Applied Mathematics written by Mark H. Holmes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-18 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOAM. This acronym has been used for over ?fty years at Rensselaer to designate an upper-division course entitled, Foundations of Applied Ma- ematics. This course was started by George Handelman in 1956, when he came to Rensselaer from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. His objective was to closely integrate mathematical and physical reasoning, and in the p- cess enable students to obtain a qualitative understanding of the world we live in. FOAM was soon taken over by a young faculty member, Lee Segel. About this time a similar course, Introduction to Applied Mathematics, was introduced by Chia-Ch’iao Lin at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together Lin and Segel, with help from Handelman, produced one of the landmark textbooks in applied mathematics, Mathematics Applied to - terministic Problems in the Natural Sciences. This was originally published in 1974, and republished in 1988 by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, in their Classics Series. This textbook comes from the author teaching FOAM over the last few years. In this sense, it is an updated version of the Lin and Segel textbook.

Book Geometric Constructions

Download or read book Geometric Constructions written by George E. Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric constructions have been a popular part of mathematics throughout history. The first chapter here is informal and starts from scratch, introducing all the geometric constructions from high school that have been forgotten or were never learned. The second chapter formalises Plato's game, and examines problems from antiquity such as the impossibility of trisecting an arbitrary angle. After that, variations on Plato's theme are explored: using only a ruler, a compass, toothpicks, a ruler and dividers, a marked rule, or a tomahawk, ending in a chapter on geometric constructions by paperfolding. The author writes in a charming style and nicely intersperses history and philosophy within the mathematics, teaching a little geometry and a little algebra along the way. This is as much an algebra book as it is a geometry book, yet since all the algebra and geometry needed is developed within the text, very little mathematical background is required. This text has been class tested for several semesters with a master's level class for secondary teachers.

Book Applying Mathematics to Construction

Download or read book Applying Mathematics to Construction written by Kenneth Williams and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Williams formulae, factors and accurate shorts were first used to help his students, but then the author saw that many professional construction workers also could not make simple calculations in the field. )-- Author, teacher and contractor Kenneth Williams, Sr., announced today the release of Applying Mathematics to Construction, Carpentry Mathematics and Estimating, published by Outskirts Press. Williams handy guide for both students and professionals diminishes the need for cumbersome measuring devices and calculators by teaching simple, easy formulae for quickly figuring out construction math problems and material estimation costs.Realizing that the use of calculators and measuring devices can also hamper ones ability to think creatively and quickly on the spot, Williams put together these clever mental calculation tips to help students, instructors and general contractors. The first section of Applying Mathematics to Construction shows how to make calculations without the use of external tools and contains such innovative tricks as his conversion of a large number of feet to inches in seconds, mentally. Section two covers how materials are measured and sold and, like the first section, offers one simple formula after another to make on the spot calculations simply and immediately.
