Book Spectral Theory of Self Adjoint Operators in Hilbert Space

Download or read book Spectral Theory of Self Adjoint Operators in Hilbert Space written by Michael Sh. Birman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is Approach your problems from the right end that they can't see the problem. and begin with the answers. Then one day, perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Clad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be com pletely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order" , which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.

Book Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Its Applications

Download or read book Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Its Applications written by E. Zeidler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-12-11 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of a five-volume exposition of the main principles of nonlinear functional analysis and its applications to the natural sciences, economics, and numerical analysis. The presentation is self -contained and accessible to the nonspecialist. Part II concerns the theory of monotone operators. It is divided into two subvolumes, II/A and II/B, which form a unit. The present Part II/A is devoted to linear monotone operators. It serves as an elementary introduction to the modern functional analytic treatment of variational problems, integral equations, and partial differential equations of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic type. This book also represents an introduction to numerical functional analysis with applications to the Ritz method along with the method of finite elements, the Galerkin methods, and the difference method. Many exercises complement the text. The theory of monotone operators is closely related to Hilbert's rigorous justification of the Dirichlet principle, and to the 19th and 20th problems of Hilbert which he formulated in his famous Paris lecture in 1900, and which strongly influenced the development of analysis in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of survey articles based on lectures presented at a colloquium and workshop in Geneva in 2003 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles François Sturm. It aims at giving an overview of the development of Sturm-Liouville theory from its historical roots to present day research. It is the first time that such a comprehensive survey has been made available in compact form. The contributions come from internationally renowned experts and cover a wide range of developments of the theory. The book can therefore serve both as an introduction to Sturm-Liouville theory and as background for ongoing research. The volume is addressed to researchers in related areas, to advanced students and to those interested in the historical development of mathematics. The book will also be of interest to those involved in applications of the theory to diverse areas such as engineering, fluid dynamics and computational spectral analysis.

Book Sturm Liouville Theory and its Applications

Download or read book Sturm Liouville Theory and its Applications written by Mohammed Al-Gwaiz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed from a course taught to senior undergraduates, this book provides a unified introduction to Fourier analysis and special functions based on the Sturm-Liouville theory in L2. The text’s presentation follows a clear, rigorous mathematical style that is highly readable. The author first establishes the basic results of Sturm-Liouville theory and then provides examples and applications to illustrate the theory. The final two chapters, on Fourier and Laplace transformations, demonstrate the use of the Fourier series method for representing functions to integral representations.

Book Special Functions and Generalized Sturm Liouville Problems

Download or read book Special Functions and Generalized Sturm Liouville Problems written by Mohammad Masjed-Jamei and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses theoretical and applied aspects of Sturm-Liouville theory and its generalization. It introduces and classifies generalized Sturm-Liouville problems in three different spaces: continuous, discrete, and q-discrete spaces, focusing on special functions that are solutions of a regular or singular Sturm-Liouville problem. Further, it describes the conditions under which the usual Sturm-Liouville problems with symmetric solutions can be extended to a larger class, particularly highlighting the solutions of generalized problems that result in new orthogonal sequences of continuous or discrete functions. Sturm-Liouville theory is central to problems in many areas, such as engineering, mathematics, physics, and biology. This accessibly written book on the topic is a valuable resource for a broad interdisciplinary readership, from novices to experts.

Book Inverse Sturm Liouville Problems

Download or read book Inverse Sturm Liouville Problems written by B. M. Levitan and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in inverse problems of spectral analysis has increased considerably in recent years due to the applications to important non-linear equations in mathematical physics. This monograph is devoted to the detailed theory of inverse problems and methods of their solution for the Sturm-Liouville case. Chapters 1--6 contain proofs which are, in many cases, very different from those known earlier. Chapters 4--6 are devoted to inverse problems of quantum scattering theory with attention being focused on physical applications. Chapters 7--11 are based on the author's recent research on the theory of finite- and infinite-zone potentials. A chapter discussing the applications to the Korteweg--de Vries problem is also included. This monograph is important reading for all researchers in the field of mathematics and physics.

Book Partial Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems with Applications

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems with Applications written by Mark A. Pinsky and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the basic techniques of separation of variables and Fourier series, the book presents the solution of boundary-value problems for basic partial differential equations: the heat equation, wave equation, and Laplace equation, considered in various standard coordinate systems--rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical. Each of the equations is derived in the three-dimensional context; the solutions are organized according to the geometry of the coordinate system, which makes the mathematics especially transparent. Bessel and Legendre functions are studied and used whenever appropriate throughout the text. The notions of steady-state solution of closely related stationary solutions are developed for the heat equation; applications to the study of heat flow in the earth are presented. The problem of the vibrating string is studied in detail both in the Fourier transform setting and from the viewpoint of the explicit representation (d'Alembert formula). Additional chapters include the numerical analysis of solutions and the method of Green's functions for solutions of partial differential equations. The exposition also includes asymptotic methods (Laplace transform and stationary phase). With more than 200 working examples and 700 exercises (more than 450 with answers), the book is suitable for an undergraduate course in partial differential equations.
