Book Theory of Machines and Computations

Download or read book Theory of Machines and Computations written by Zvi Kohavi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Machines and Computations consists of papers presented at the International Symposium on the Theory of Machines and Computations, held at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, in August 1971. This book is organized into five main sections—computability theory, formal and stochastic languages, finite automata, fault-detection experiments, and switching theory. In these sections, this compilation specifically discusses the computationally complex and pseudo-random zero-one valued functions and rate of convergence of local iterative schemes. The simple syntactic operators on full semiAFLs, whirl decomposition of stochastic systems, and existence of a periodic analogue of a finite automaton are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the theorems on additive automata, fault location in iterative logic arrays, and tree-threshold-synthesis of ternary functions. This publication is useful to practitioners and specialists interested in the theory of machines and computations.

Book General Systems Theory Mathematical Foundations

Download or read book General Systems Theory Mathematical Foundations written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1975-03-21 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; andmethods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particularbranches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. - Best operator approximation,- Non-Lagrange interpolation,- Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform- Generalised low-rank matrix approximation- Optimal data compression- Optimal nonlinear filtering

Book Selected Papers on Algebra and Topology by Garrett Birkhoff

Download or read book Selected Papers on Algebra and Topology by Garrett Birkhoff written by J.S. Oliveira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume of reprints are what I consider to be my most interesting and influential papers on algebra and topology. To tie them together, and to place them in context, I have supplemented them by a series of brief essays sketching their historieal background (as I see it). In addition to these I have listed some subsequent papers by others which have further developed some of my key ideas. The papers on universal algebra, lattice theory, and general topology collected in the present volume concern ideas which have become familiar to all working mathematicians. It may be helpful to make them readily accessible in one volume. I have tried in the introduction to each part to state the most significant features of ea ch paper reprinted there, and to indieate later developments. The background that shaped and stimulated my early work on universal algebra, lattice theory, and topology may be of some interest. As a Harvard undergraduate in 1928-32, I was encouraged to do independent reading and to write an original thesis. My tutorial reading included de la Vallee-Poussin's beautiful Cours d'Analyse Infinitesimale, Hausdorff's Grundzüge der Mengenlehre, and Frechet's Espaces Abstraits. In addition, I discovered Caratheodory's 1912 paper "Vber das lineare Mass von Punktmengen" and Hausdorff's 1919 paper on "Dimension und Ausseres Mass," and derived much inspiration from them. A fragment of my thesis, analyzing axiom systems for separable metrizable spaces, was later published [2]. * This background led to the work summarized in Part IV.

Book Applications of Automata Theory and Algebra

Download or read book Applications of Automata Theory and Algebra written by John L. Rhodes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally written in 1969 by Berkeley mathematician John Rhodes. It is the founding work in what is now called algebraic engineering, an emerging field created by using the unifying scheme of finite state machine models and their complexity to tie together many fields: finite group theory, semigroup theory, automata and sequential machine theory, finite phase space physics, metabolic and evolutionary biology, epistemology, mathematical theory of psychoanalysis, philosophy, and game theory. The author thus introduced a completely original algebraic approach to complexity and the understanding of finite systems. The unpublished manuscript, often referred to as "The Wild Book," became an underground classic, continually requested in manuscript form, and read by many leading researchers in mathematics, complex systems, artificial intelligence, and systems biology. Yet it has never been available in print until now. This first published edition has been edited and updated by Chrystopher Nehaniv for the 21st century. Its novel and rigorous development of the mathematical theory of complexity via algebraic automata theory reveals deep and unexpected connections between algebra (semigroups) and areas of science and engineering. Co-founded by John Rhodes and Kenneth Krohn in 1962, algebraic automata theory has grown into a vibrant area of research, including the complexity of automata, and semigroups and machines from an algebraic viewpoint, and which also touches on infinite groups, and other areas of algebra. This book sets the stage for the application of algebraic automata theory to areas outside mathematics. The material and references have been brought up to date bythe editor as much as possible, yet the book retains its distinct character and the bold yet rigorous style of the author. Included are treatments of topics such as models of time as algebra via semigroup theory; evolution-complexity relations applicable to both ontogeny and evolution; an approach to classification of biological reactions and pathways; the relationships among coordinate systems, symmetry, and conservation principles in physics; discussion of "punctuated equilibrium" (prior to Stephen Jay Gould); games; and applications to psychology, psychoanalysis, epistemology, and the purpose of life. The approach and contents will be of interest to a variety of researchers and students in algebra as well as to the diverse, growing areas of applications of algebra in science and engineering. Moreover, many parts of the book will be intelligible to non-mathematicians, including students and experts from diverse backgrounds.

Book Systems Approaches Theories Applications

Download or read book Systems Approaches Theories Applications written by W.E. Hartnett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years I have believed in a particular style of education for myself. The idea is to focus on matters that you want to learn about, find a modest amount of money, and then organize a symposium of those matters, inviting knowledgeable individuals to participate - and, by extension - to come and help with my education. The Eighth George Hudson Symposium held at Plattsburgh, New York on April 11-12, 1975 was another attempt on my part to learn something. The ostensible reason for the Symposium was explained in the Announce ment of the Symposium as follows: Systems Theory is currently one of the exciting areas of intellectual activity, attracting persons from diverse disciplines. In fact, it has almost become the prototype of inter disciplinary effort. As such, it needs the interchange of ideas, viewpoints, and opinions as a necessary condition for growth. This Symposium was convened to bring together a number of persons- some of them experts and some beginners - for two days of con centrated interaction on Systems Theory. The breadth of the interests of the invited speakers can be noted from their "home" disciplines but space limitations forestall any attempt to document their actual current interests which range from brain function to political institutions to technoethics. The speakers were chosen for their expository and interactive ability as well as for their work in Systems Theory and ample time has been allowed for discussion with them.

Book Algebraic Analysis of Social Networks

Download or read book Algebraic Analysis of Social Networks written by J. Antonio R. Ostoic and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented in a comprehensive manner, this book provides a comprehensive foundation in algebraic approaches for the analysis of different types of social networks such as multiple, signed, and affiliation networks. The study of such configurations corresponds to the structural analysis within the social sciences, and the methods applied for the analysis are in the areas of abstract algebra, combinatorics, and graph theory. Current research in social networks has moved toward the examination of more realistic but also more complex social relations by which agents or actors are connected in multiple ways. Addressing this trend, this book offers hands-on training of the algebraic procedures presented along with the computer package multiplex, written by the book’s author specifically to perform analyses of multiple social networks. An introductory section on both complex networks and for R will feature, however the subjects themselves correspond to advanced courses on social network analysis with the specialization on algebraic models and methods.
