Book Application of Roller Compacted Concrete in Colorado s Roadways

Download or read book Application of Roller Compacted Concrete in Colorado s Roadways written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a no-slump concrete mixture that is transported, placed, and compacted with the same construction equipment as asphalt pavement. RCCs were used to construct three sections of pavement in Weld County Road 28 (WCR 28), eastbound of State Highway (EB 66), and westbound of State Highway (WB 66). Three sets of field inspections were conducted: 1) during construction; 2) nine months after construction; and 3) two years after construction. Strength and durability behaviors of the RCCs were tested right after construction, and some of the material properties of the RCCs were further tested nine months after construction. Field inspections showed that the diamond ground surface texture of EB 66 and WB 66 is better and smoother than the surface of WCR 28 where large cracks and chipping occurred along both longitudinal and transverse directions. The relatively poor quality of RCC samples at WCR 28C location may be due to the different quality of concrete mix, the degree of compaction used during construction, and the absence of saw cut joints. The concrete specimens were tested for rapid chloride permeability, drying shrinkage, freeze-thaw resistance, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength. The test results obtained after the construction indicated that the chloride permeabilities are in the low to very low ranges, the drying shrinkages are in the normal range, and freeze-thaw resistance is fine. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength are also in the normal range similar to that of conventional concrete. The test results obtained nine months after the construction indicated that deteriorations occurred in the RCC concretes. After only nine months of service, the RCCs already showed noticeable changes in all of the selected properties tested. More tests and field inspections should be conducted in the future after a longer monitoring period to verify and validate the initial findings observed in the material properties and surface conditions of the RCC pavements.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to investigate the performance of a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement for use as a high-speed surface. A test section consisting of a small parking lot and a two-lane roadway was constructed. During construction, three major parameters were varied: paver speed, rolling amount, and joint spacing. The paver speed was varied to determine what effect, if any, this has on average lay-down density, average final density, rideability, skid resistance, load transfer, and density profiles. The average lay-down and final densities of the RCC pavement were determined using a nuclear density device, which determined the density of various depths throughout the pavement. The load transfer was determined at transverse joints and transverse cracks by using falling weight deflectometer data. The rolling amount was varied to determine its effect on all of the same properties as paver speed except lay-down density. The joint spacing was varied to examine an optimum spacing that would not develop intermediate cracking and would provide the desired rideability and load transfer. From this project, it was determined that no adjustments in paver speed, rolling (types of patterns), or joint spacing will significantly enhance RCC pavement properties so that it may be used for high-speed applications.

Book Guide for Roller compacted Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Guide for Roller compacted Concrete Pavements written by Dale S. Harrington and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is an economical, fast-construction candidate for many pavement applications. It has traditionally been used for pavements carrying heavy loads in low-speed areas because of its relatively coarse surface. However, in recent years its use has expanded into commercial areas and local streets and highways. This guide provides owner-agencies, contractors, material suppliers, and others with a thorough introduction to RCC and its many applications. Based on current research and best practices, the guide provides detailed overviews of RCC properties and materials, mixture proportioning, structural design, and production and construction considerations, plus troubleshooting guidelines and an extensive reference list for more comprehensive information.
