Book Oscillations and Resonances

Download or read book Oscillations and Resonances written by Sergey G. Glebov and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume monograph presents new methods of construction of global asymptotics of solutions to nonlinear equations with small parameter. These allow one to match the asymptotics of various properties with each other in transition regions and to get unified formulas for the connection of characteristic parameters of approximate solutions. This approach underlies modern asymptotic methods and gives a deep insight into crucial nonlinear phenomena in the natural sciences. These include the outset of chaos in dynamical systems, incipient solitary and shock waves, oscillatory processes in crystals, engineering applications, and quantum systems. Apart from being of independent interest, such approximate solutions serve as a foolproof basis for testing numerical algorithms. This first volume presents asymptotic methods in oscillation and resonance problems described by ordinary differential equations, whereby the second volume will be devoted to applications of asymptotic methods in waves and boundary value problems. Contents Asymptotic expansions and series Asymptotic methods for solving nonlinear equations Nonlinear oscillator in potential well Autoresonances in nonlinear systems Asymptotics for loss of stability Systems of coupled oscillators

Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers presented at the Symposium on "Recent Developments in Non-linear Oscillations of Mechanical Systems", held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 2 - 5 March 1999. This Symposium was initiated and sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (lUI AM) and organised in conjunction with Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Ihe purpose of the Symposium was to bring together scientists active in different fields of oscillations with the aim to review the recent progress in theory of oscillations and engineering applications and to outline the prospects in its further achievements to then co-ordinate and direct research in this field to further co-operation between scientists and various scientific institutions. An International Scientific Committee was appointed by the Bureau of IUI AM with the following members: Nguyen Van Dao (Vietnam, Co-Chairman) E.J. Kreuzer (Germany, Co-Chairman) D.H. van Campen (The Netherlands) F.L. Chernousko (Russia) A.H. Nayfeh (U.S.A) Nguyen Xuan Hung (Vietnam) W.O. Schiehlen (Germany) J.M.T. Thompson (U.K) Y. Veda (Japan). This Committee selected the participants to be invited and the papers to be presented at the Symposium. As a result of this procedure, 52 active scientists from 16 countries responded to the invitation, and 42 papers were presented in lecture and poster discussion sessions.

Book Asymptotic Methods for Wave and Quantum Problems

Download or read book Asymptotic Methods for Wave and Quantum Problems written by M. V. Karasev and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection consists of four papers in different areas of mathematical physics united by the intrinsic coherence of the asymptotic methods used. The papers describe both the known results and most recent achievements, as well as new concepts and ideas in mathematical analysis of quantum and wave problems. In the introductory paper ``Quantization and Intrinsic Dynamics'' a relationship between quantization of symplectic manifolds and nonlinear wave equations is described and discussed from the viewpoint of the weak asymptotics method (asymptotics in distributions) and the semiclassical approximation method. It also explains a hidden dynamic geometry that arises when using these methods. Three other papers discuss applications of asymptotic methods to the construction of wave-type solutions of nonlinear PDE's, to the theory of semiclassical approximation (in particular, the Whitham method) for nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations, and to the study of the Schrodinger type equations whose potential wells are sufficiently shallow that the discrete spectrum contains precisely one point. All the papers contain detailed references and are oriented not only to specialists in asymptotic methods, but also to a wider audience of researchers and graduate students working in partial differential equations and mathematical physics.

Book Asymptotic Methods In Nonlinear Wave Phenomena In Honor Of The 65th Birthday Of Antonio Greco

Download or read book Asymptotic Methods In Nonlinear Wave Phenomena In Honor Of The 65th Birthday Of Antonio Greco written by Marco Sammartino and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-04-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together several contributions from leading experts in the field of nonlinear wave propagation. This field, which during the last three decades has seen important breakthroughs from the theoretical point of view, has recently acquired increased relevance due to advances in the technology of fluids e.g. at microscale or nanoscale and the recognition of crucial applications to the understanding of biological phenomena.Nonlinear wave theory requires the use of disparate approaches, including formal and rigorous asymptotic methods, Lie group theory, energy methods, numerical analysis, and bifurcation theory. This book presents a unique blend in which different aspects of the theory are enlightened and several real-life applications are investigated. The book will be a valuable resource for applied scientists interested in some of the most recent advances in the theory and in the applications of wave propagation, shock formation, nonequilibrium thermodynamics and energy methods.

Book Asymptotic Wave Theory

Download or read book Asymptotic Wave Theory written by Maurice Roseau and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymptotic Wave Theory investigates the asymptotic behavior of wave representations and presents some typical results borrowed from hydrodynamics and elasticity theory. It describes techniques such as Fourier-Laplace transforms, operational calculus, special functions, and asymptotic methods. It also discusses applications to the wave equation, the elements of scattering matrix theory, problems related to the wave equation, and diffraction. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the Fourier-Laplace integral, the Mellin transform, and special functions such as the gamma function and the Bessel functions. It then considers wave propagation, with emphasis on representations of plane, cylindrical or spherical waves. It methodically introduces the reader to the reflexion and refraction of a plane wave at the interface between two homogeneous media, the asymptotic expansion of Hankel's functions in the neighborhood of the point at infinity, and the asymptotic behavior of the Laplace transform. The book also examines the method of steepest descent, the asymptotic representation of Hankel's function of large order, and the scattering matrix theory. The remaining chapters focus on problems of flow in open channels, the propagation of elastic waves within a layered spherical body, and some problems in water wave theory. This book is a valuable resource for mechanics and students of applied mathematics and mechanics.

Book Applied Asymptotic Methods in Nonlinear Oscillations

Download or read book Applied Asymptotic Methods in Nonlinear Oscillations written by Yuri A. Mitropolsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-07-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume addresses the application of asymptotic methods in nonlinear oscillations. Such methods see a large variety of applications in physics, mechanics and engineering. The advantages of using asymptotic methods in solving nonlinear problems are firstly simplicity, especially for computing higher approximations, and secondly their applicability to a large class of quasi-linear systems. In contrast to the existing literature, this book is concerned with the applied aspects of the methods concerned and also contains problems relevant to the everyday practice of engineers, physicists and mathematicians. Usually, dynamics systems are classified and examined by their degrees of freedom. This book is constructed from another point of view based upon the originating mechanism of the oscillations: free oscillation, self-excited oscillation, forced oscillation, and parametrically excited oscillation. The text has been designed to cover material from the elementary to the more advanced, in increasing order of difficulty. It is of considerable interest to both students and researchers in applied mathematics, physical and mechanical sciences, and engineering.

Book Asymptotic Methods for Investigating Quasiwave Equations of Hyperbolic Type

Download or read book Asymptotic Methods for Investigating Quasiwave Equations of Hyperbolic Type written by Yuri A. Mitropolsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of partial differential equations is a wide and rapidly developing branch of contemporary mathematics. Problems related to partial differential equations of order higher than one are so diverse that a general theory can hardly be built up. There are several essentially different kinds of differential equations called elliptic, hyperbolic, and parabolic. Regarding the construction of solutions of Cauchy, mixed and boundary value problems, each kind of equation exhibits entirely different properties. Cauchy problems for hyperbolic equations and systems with variable coefficients have been studied in classical works of Petrovskii, Leret, Courant, Gording. Mixed problems for hyperbolic equations were considered by Vishik, Ladyzhenskaya, and that for general two dimensional equations were investigated by Bitsadze, Vishik, Gol'dberg, Ladyzhenskaya, Myshkis, and others. In last decade the theory of solvability on the whole of boundary value problems for nonlinear differential equations has received intensive development. Significant results for nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations of second order were obtained in works of Gvazava, Ladyzhenskaya, Nakhushev, Oleinik, Skripnik, and others. Concerning the solvability in general of nonlinear hyperbolic equations, which are connected to the theory of local and nonlocal boundary value problems for hyperbolic equations, there are only partial results obtained by Bronshtein, Pokhozhev, Nakhushev.
